Kos: 'Negotiator' Trump Caves to Big Pharma

Joan McCarter, Daily Kos: Popular vote loser Donald Trump made a lot of promises during the campaign, touting his superior powers as a negotiator. He was going to make all the deals. He was going to bring big pharma to its knees, forcing it to negotiate Medicare drug prices. Then he met big pharma, and folded like his ill-fitting suit. Today, after a meeting with pharmaceutical industry lobbyists and executives, he abandoned that pledge, referring to an idea he supported as recently as three weeks ago as a form of "price fixing" that would hurt "smaller, younger companies." Instead of getting tough, Trump's new plan is that he's "going to be lowering taxes" and "getting rid of regulations." ... As recently as January 11, President-elect Trump was promising to revisit this policy.

More

"Pharma has a lot of lobbies, a lot of lobbyists and a lot of power. And there's very little bidding on drugs," he said at a press conference at Trump Tower in Manhattan. "We're the largest buyer of drugs in the world, and yet we don't bid properly."

Today he apparently changed his mind. According to Herb Jackson, the designated pool reporter for the day, Trump's new policy on prescription drugs is that drug companies should get tax cuts and deregulation.

Comments

He can cross that one off his long list of -------- promises.

Donald is going to cave in a lot more than his supporters ever expected. Given his personality, he'll never even attempt anything he isn't assured he can't "win" from his point of view.

Pharmaceutical companies are hard, why risk any chance of coming up short?

Executive Order are easy and immediately ego-gratifying, so he's done a lot of that. Disagreement with his received wisdom is not gratifying, so he fires people who don't kiss his ass.

Just more doing the people's work.

They wanted less safe medicine and tax cuts for billionaires.

That is exactly what they wanted.

Brilliant negotiating there, Donald. Big Pharma loves you! They're going to take the money and run. But don't worry, they'll support you in 2020. The question is: Will American voters?

Is little d going to do away with patent laws? Is that his next edict? That's what keeps drug prices high. When a patent is expiring, the company tries to find a different ailment the drug can treat and then patents that for another 20 years.

#4 His collection of retards will lovingly support him so long as the not-muslim muslim ban is on.

#6 | Posted by 726 at 2017-01-31 03:02 PM

Little d is great at negotiating, he got votes for promises he had no intention of keeping and now he will collect kickbacks by selling out the US to the 0.1%ers.
His deplorable supporters were bamboozled by border theatre and are going to pay for it bigly.

I don't for one second believe his supporters care about getting screwed. They believe they were screwed either way. It's my belief they're simply looking for a different position for a change.
Unfortunately for us, it looks like it's the butt.

"Unfortunately for us, it looks like it's the butt."

But... Where did they think they were getting screwed before????

#9 | Posted by snoofy at 2017-01-31 03:58 PM

People didn't want a different position, they just wanted someone who would talk dirty to them in a different way.

Pish-posh

You people have this all wrong

Trump just masterfully negotiated you a $1.05 refund on your taxes. Of course your meds will be more outrageously priced than before, but you can buy yourself a pack of gum or a "meal" at taco-bell.

Sincerely

everyone knows a sign of a great leader is when they comes in and are made CEO, 60% of the company protests and stops working...

Actually Hillary knows how to use the carrot and stick approach. She is frankly a top notch negotiator.

Instead, people like you elected Cheeto Jesus and left us to get raped at the bargaining table.

You should REALLY stop posting. You have YET to be right about literally anything.

What Obama, or Hillary, or Stein, or Bernie or Cruz would have done is irrelevant.

It's Trump's table.

Ryan and his ilk tell us Medicare is bankrupt but then don't consider changing the law so that Medicare could negotiate for drugs. He doesn't care about the people on Medicare, he cares about the BigPharma because that's where the big money is.

Big Pharma has us in a choke-hold. They are the evil twin of the Military Industrial Complex, charging us the nominal arm and leg for life saving drugs some of which have been developed by the people's money. www.latimes.com

As with everything else Trump you have to realize we just don't understand it.

"The art of the deal" really means Donald gets paid at least a little, everyone else be damn d.

So he probably "negotiated" perfectly well by his own standards.

#23 | Posted by jpw at 2017-01-31 10:02 PM

First of many failures, I presume.

#24 | Posted by rstybeach11 at 2017-01-31 10:11 PM

Hardly the first, Mexico is the first negotiating failure. Iran is already turning into a messy ballistic missile test, breaking treaties runs both ways. He's admitted China is the greatest negotiator of all. This will not end well.

Just like everything else about Trump's ego, he assumes everyone else is going to "drop trou" just because his name is Trump. He hasn't figured out yet that respect has to be earned by a U.S. president ~ not demanded ~ which is only one of the thousands of reasons why this baboon is going to find himself (and the United States) twisting in the wind as he racks up one failure after another at our expense.

As usual, Trump will lie to the public to CY his own A. There is absolutely NOTHING out of his mouth that can be believed.

Enjoy yourself Obama haters. You elected this simian predator. Now you're his prey.

No BigPhama doesn't have us in a choke-hold. The politicians they own have us in a choke-hold. That now includes Trump.
