As Shiite Iran rises, the White House has muted its calls for democratic reform in the Middle East and is embracing authoritarian Sunni Arab regimes. "We are adjusting ourselves to the point where we line up with the Sunnis against the Shias in this broader sectarian divide," said foreign policy analyst Martin Indyk.

Pretty darned sad that Bush didn't understand the Sunni/Shia thing before the war.

Aw well, lots of profit since then !

U.S. Cozies Up to Sunni Regimes

No kidding. Bush's buddies the Saudis are all Sunnis and he's getting ready to nuke the Iranians who arethisclose with the Iraqi Shiites who run the Iraq government.

The line in the sand has been drawn.

Al queda is sunni, for those who's remembrance of history extends only to Clinton's getting a blow job. Osama and all 19 highjackers were sunni, as were/are al queda's bankers, donors and supporters.

But we all knew where Bush's alliance was when the saudis were airlifted out after 9-11 but before they could be questioned.

Well The Shia Plan Didn't Work So Lets Buddy Up With the Sunni And Bomb Iran !!

Fuck the Sunni's!

U.S. Cozies Up to Sunni Regimes

BushCo has always aligned itself with the Sunni. It must be a slow news day for someone to dredge this up as something new.

politicalhumor.about.com

Are we just going to wake up one morning to find that we're no longer at war with Al-Queda, we've never been at war with Al-Queda?

I'm waiting for the anoucement that Bin Laden is really an Iranian double agent, he's hiding out in Tehran, and Iran caused 9/11.

Blowback will continue and you will pay. Bush will head off to Crawford or Paraguay to sharpen his deshrubbing skills.

The Taliban are Sunni. Their Iraqi Sunni buddy's can just ship them across the border. This might just solve the US problem with the Iranian weapons in Afghanistan. This could be a secret peace plan to prevent war with Iran.Bloody brilliant move the US is making.

Sunni, Shia. they're all pink on the inside.

Sure they do, because they want to keep the war going. Why would they cozy up to the regimes that want to end the war?

George Bush should decide who the enemy is before he starts another war. Now he is saying it is the Shia and Iran. Last week it was the Baathists and the Sunnis. Why don't we just declare war on everyone with oil??

**** Why don't we just declare war on everyone with oil??

.......please.......don't give them any ideas......

SKIZZIKS I'm not giving them any ideas they don't already have. I've been watching as they slowly try to build a case against Hugo Chavez.

The Sunni/Shia were given a chance to prove their willingness and ability to get along. If they are incapable of living together in a civilised manner, the mother of invention will compel the players and decision makers to craft what is best in a given situation.

Go for it.

Thanks Bush for exposing this element once and for all for the world to see.

Oh yes, thank you President Bush for invading Iraq and then occupying it so we could all see that the Sunni and Shia don't get along because nobody knew that before we invaded. So thank you GW, you learned us a lot.

Oh, and thanks GW for doing it "on the cheap" so it wouldn't cost too much. And thanks for doing it during another war in Afghanistan that had nothing to do with Iraqis. Oh thank you, thank you, thank you George Bush. We'll be thanking you for the next twenty years as we pay for this important lesson.

"Thank you SIR! May I have another!?"

"Thank you SIR! May I have another!?"

Skull and Bones

And Shia and Sunni BOTH hate us.

Heck of a job Bush/Cheney!

Not that reading the article would ever change the small minds on the DR, but if any of you would have accidentally clicked on the article, you would have seen this:

Some experts in the region suggest the reaffirming of ties to America's traditional Arab allies is not so much a sectarian question as more simply a reemphasis on longtime US security interests in the region.

The Bush administration has concluded that those interests energy security, counterterrorism, and stability are best served by working with the Arab regimes that happen to be Sunni, they say, but not because of some Sunni-over-Shiite shift.

It's more Arab-Persian than it is Sunni-Shia," says Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, highlighting the effort to contain Persian Iran that underpins interests. "It's not sectarian," he adds, "it's realpolitik."
The State Department has always had a better understanding of the dynamics in the ME then any Member of Congress or President ever would, and from my understanding from friends in DC of how the policy has changed over the past 6 months, Foggy Bottom has regained influence that it never had when Rummy and Rove were still in the White House.
