Anonymous Liberal---It really is true that a significant percentage of conservatives have managed to construct for themselves an alternate universe in which up is down, left is right, and political reality is completely inverted. I don't know any other way of explaining how someone can argue, without feeling completely embarrassed, that the Left hates Rush Limbaugh for the "quality of his mind" or that the "vilification of individuals" by the Left has become "one of the central features of contemporary politics."

"Conservatives Are From Uranus"

Or have their head up their own

Moreover, the vilification of Democratic politicians and prominent left-leaning individuals is the primary focus of nearly all conservative punditry, from television to radio to the internet. It's Rush Limbaugh's entire shtick, the way he made a name for himself. To hear Rush and his supporters complain that his words are being taken out of context in order to smear him is just so far beyond any reasonable hypocrisy threshold that it's hard to even know what to say. This is a man who has made a living taking things other people say out of context (or just making it up) in order to smear and vilify them. He does this every day.

As I watched the usual assortment of conservative attack/apologists making the rounds on cable over the Rush controversy, I wondered aloud how can those who so strongly believe that honor and morality are underpinnings of this nation's history blatantly lie and play dumb when confronted with obvious demeaning and incendiary rhetoric from one of their own?

It struck me when Kerry's last gaffe was rebroadcast and they all shouted he mean't to debase the troops and not Bush by his clumsy statement that its impossible for any conservative to actually practice the religious tenets they try to enshrine in law on a continual basis. What about contrition? What about accepting responsibility for one's actions even if the intent was opposite of the effect particular words have? The first words out of Kerry's mouth afterwards was an apology to anyone taking offense. Did Rush do this? Only in a manner befitting his persona. He apologized by further impugning the honesty and intelligence of the soldier asking him to repeat his words to the soldier's face.

Its a sad spectacle in American society and part of the reason the majority of Americans don't bother to participate in the elective process at all. Many know this is precisely what the Republicans want. Poison the body-politic enough with hatred, accusation and vitriole and most citizens will just withdraw rather than wading through the sewer with all its stench and disease.

Such screeds represent 'Exhibit A' in the mentality of the Right. They essentially take what are their own, readily apparent weaknesses, and project them onto progressives.

This technique is exactly how Karl Rove operated (and continues to operate, methinks--anyone really believe that he is totally out of the picture, not 'advising' the Right in any way?). And it works, and (unfortunately) continues to work. In response, progressives are forced to continually and constantly defend themselves and insist that such positions are not ours at all, but are instead the reverse.

Thus, the progressive agenda is held at bay. While we marvel at the intentional obtuseness of the Right in most any matter of import, we simultaneously strive to defend ourselves to a bought and paid for media machine that could not care less. All the while our issues and stances that are of import to the progression of our nation--and indeed is emergence from the cesspool the Right has created (most especially in the past 7 years) are not heard and/or are not given the spotlight they deserve.

Meanwhile, our Nation sinks deeper into that cesspool.

I couldn't say it any better.

The Gay Old Party for Uranus.

Don't drop the soap around them.

I have to call bullshit here. I listen , read and google all sides, I bookmark many lefty sites , and subscribe to The Nation and Human Events.
Both of these dudes have their heads somewhere. Both sides are guilty and both sides are pointing fingers.

Sorry Kerrin. The Democrats did not practice the "Politics of Personal Destruction," the Republicans did and continue to.

It is completely disingenuous for Rush and his supporters to claim that his statement wasn't a direct slap at soldiers who return from Iraq and publically support withdrawal from their own personal experiences. Its about the allowance for differences, not freedom of speech.

The entire Move On controversy should never have been started. They put a ? behind the words ...or General Betrayus. It was obvious to any rational person without a political axe to grind that the point was the general's testimony could not be trusted as candid because the White House vetted and directed everything that he said. It was never an accusation against his service or to diminish respect for his authority. And to top it off, the very same language, including the use of the word "betrayal" was then posted on Fox News' own website under the banner of Col. Hunt, while the American Conservative magazine made the same assertions that the Iraq generals were letting their troops down because they allowed the White House to use them politically as mouthpieces.

Sorry, but the Democrats don't act like this, and when its alleged that they've insulted someone, they do not attack the victim with all barrels blazing. They apologize for having offended someone and then try to explain what they actually thought they were saying.

Cases in point:

Rocker Bruce Springsteen answers critics who call his anti-war sentiments unpatriotic by saying the real sin against patriotism is saying nothing while your country is being harmed.

Springsteen says "That's just the language of the day ... the modus operandi for anybody who doesn't like somebody ... criticizing where we've been or where we're going," he tells Pelley. "I believe every citizen has a stake in the course, direction of their country. That's why we vote ... It's unpatriotic at any given moment to sit back and let things pass that are damaging to some place that you love so dearly and that has given me so much," says the 58-year-old musician.

In the interview, Springsteen points out the direction in which the U.S. is going, by his estimation. "I think we've seen things happen over the past six years that I don't think anybody ever thought they'd ever see in the United States," says Springsteen. "When people think of the Unites States' identity, they don't think of torture. They don't think of illegal wiretapping. They don't think of voter suppression," he tells Pelley. "They don't think of no habeas corpus," he says, referring to the people being held by the U.S. government in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"Those are things that are anti-American," Springsteen says. "There's been a whole series of things that ... I never thought I'd ever see in America," he tells Pelley.

Does anyone from the left imply that Lee Greenwood, or Toby Keith are "unpatriotic" because they agree with Bush?

Name one musical artist who's experienced a backlash because they espoused pro-Bush/Iraq War ideals, then compare that to the response to the Dixie Chick's criticism of Bush as President. I defy you to name one boycott of any conservative analogous to those against one's individual freedom by conservatives against critics of Bush or the war.

The Democrats did not practice the "Politics of Personal Destruction,"

Huh
so Trophy wife
Cross dresser
betrayus
cheny's daughter
Bush horse fear
bush bike riding
Romney's religion
Nancy's astrology
among many others
don't count? Just listen to ed shultz or madows or rhodes all you get is personal attacks.
Repubs may were rose colored glasses but those two eye patches that the dems sport blind them beyond belief.

"Name one musical artist who's experienced a backlash because they espoused pro-Bush/Iraq War ideals"

The motor city madman, the difference is it was not fans who were offended with the Dixie chicks it was. When you are an entertainer you entertain your base when you insult or offend them what do you expect to happen.

Do you really think anything you mentioned above compares to impugning the patriotism or views of anyone that disagrees in a pro-war stance?

Just another example of how conservatives just don't get it at all. I don't see any concerted effort to daily bash anyone on a personal level like that from the rightwing smear machine.

The Democrats did not practice the "Politics of Personal Destruction," the Republicans did and continue to. TONY

I still call bullshit!

"Conservatives Are From Uranus"

So THAT'S why they're always full of shit!!

If verbal gaffes are your strongest points in trying to diminish someone, you've already lost the argument.

Again, someone doesn't comprehend the written language. The gist of the article is that conservatives come from an alternative universe because their views on certain issues transcend reality. Intentional puns are not verbal gaffes, but I'm honored you give me such attention.

Tony,

You owe me $20.

Jeff...

How do I owe you $20?

Tony,

Go visit the Obama flag pin thread and you'll understand.

:-)

Ah, the old "blind squirrel" finding a nut of truth. We knew you had it in you.

Not to mention, the whole attack on Obama over the pin is precisely what this thread is alluding to. Do you agree that the "personal attacks", (not jokes or one-liners) come more from the right, and that Republicans do try to make every election about "character" after they've spent months tearing down the Democratic candidate often times with very dubious smears and assertions?

Well, if we ignore comments about trophy wives, subtle dark comments about Mormonism, dressing in drag, etc. you have a good point.

Jeff...

If you want to be honest, the "trophy wife", Mormonism comments, and Rudy's cross-dressing were all mentioned as deal-breakers with the Republican electorate, not on account of the left going after any of the candidates. Didn't James Dobson and other fundamentalists make the stink about the Mormon religion not being Christian?

The difference is that the left tries to be as nonjudgemental as possible because acceptance is a core belief if it cause no internal destruction in doing so. The right is different, and has no compunction going after whatever they perceive as wrong or controversial outside of their narrower belief structure, largely based upon biblical interpretations. Its a fundamental difference between the ideologies.

Just another example of the right's disconnect with reality:

OBAMA SHOWS HE HATES AMERICA
_______________

A tempered response:

For far too many, wearing a pin is itself a patriotic exercise, which in and of itself, is rather hollow. Someone can oppose American civil liberties, prefer to stifle dissent, support un-American policies like torture and the elimination of habeas corpus, but so long as the stars and stripes are on his or her lapel, their patriotism should be considered unimpeachable. What nonsense.

It'd be easy for Obama to simply wear the pin and avoid the question, but instead he articulated a more important point about ideas carrying more weight than symbols. It was a small gesture, but it's an admirable one.

Tony... this kind of extremist and nuts exist on both sides of the issues. To say the nuts/extremists are worse on one side of the issues or the other is ...bullshit. I say we were equally burdened .
Have you ever listened to Rhandy Rhodes ?

Kerrin...

There is no left forum that daily calls into question the personal character of Republicans in the way the rightwing smear machine does! I've never heard Randi Rhodes in my life. Which papers are her columns carried in? How about Ann Coulter, who's newest rant is single women shouldn't be able to vote so Democrats would be unable to win elections? So in her world, the people's choices are less important that her own and the Republicans? How American of her!

The best example is currently Rush. He stepped his foot into it, but he still refuses that a rational understanding of what he said is derogatory toward troops that don't hold pro-war views. He refuses to even give a sincere apology and instead bashes his critics and stands defiant in re-interpreting his own words.

No one is saying that both sides aren't guilty, its just that the left continues to be pikers compared to the right. They've made it a cottage industry all their own. Even Karl Rove says so!

Have you ever listened to Rhandy Rhodes ?

As compared to Ann Coulter? I don't remember randy ever wanting to nuke the State Department, execute Republicans or disenfranchise women voters...

"War is Peace", "Ignorance Is Strength", etc. From Animal Farm by Orwell.

(For more on Orwell, see this link:
www.studentsfororwell.org It's a bit over the top, but the irony is clear.)

"4) "A spoiled child (Bush) is telling us our Social Security isn't safe anymore, so he is going to fix it for us. Well, here's your answer, you ungrateful whelp: [audio sound of 4 gunshots being fired.] Just try it, you little b*stard. [audio of gun being cocked]." -- A "humor bit" from the Randi Rhodes show "

think again - she is one of the most vicious and hateful libs out there.

here's a peach from hitlery:

17) "We have a lot of kids who don't know what works means. They think work is a four-letter word." --Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), speaking to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce "

duhrrrrrrrrrrrr...

"Those who survived the San Francisco earthquake said, "Thank God, I'm still alive." But, of course, those who died, their lives will never be the same again."

-- Sen. Barbara Boxer, (D, Calif.)

funny how this works both ways!

OH MY WORD!:

www.redbluechristian.com

something for and against everybody there!

Republicans are from Myanus? That would expain the bleating sound when I take a dump.

And the Bats are from the moon.

Molly Ivins was pretty tough on the Right, pretty much daily. But she's dead now so R.I.P. and I won't attack her. But go and look at her work.

There are tough talkers on both sides.
