Countless Americans (of every race, creed, color, religiong, ethnic group) have given their blood, limbs and very lives for the USA, with its laws and its well-defined border. This kind of action is a slap in the face to these Americans.

We have a 6 point verification system in NJ, meaning that you have to provide multiple forms of ID before you can get your license or even renew. It's kind of a hassle, and I wonder how many terrorists it actually stops. But if it stops just one, it may be worth it.

How does a driver's license make someone a safer driver? Based on my classmates in high school, giving out licenses increased the number of wrecks.

We won't even give driver's licenese to illegal aliens in California and we have the most illegal aliens in the nation -- millions of them. They don't read English, they constantly hit and run in every accident, they don't buy car insurance and they will not register their cars. Giving them a driver's license won't make them drive any safer -- it will only give incentives for more to come in. Good -- let all the illegal aliens move to NY.

Why would this fool in NY give drivers' licenses to illegal aliens when a number of the 9-11 hijackers had false and/or duplicate drivers' licenses used to carry out their plans for killing 3000 plus residents of NYC? Is this governor a Democrat?

The Democrats are at it AGAIN trying to revive the failed shamnesy bill that 70% of Americans demanded they not pass 3 months ago. What is it with the Democrats that illegal aliens ALWAYS mean more to them than their U.S. citizen constituents? In-state college tuition fees is the next illegal alien perk the Democrats are working on. Senator Richard Durbin has just put up a bill to allow all illegal aliens college in-state tuition breaks.

For example, if a kid who's a resident of Missouri who just got out of the military and back from fighting in Iraq comes home and decides he wants to attend, say, a college in NJ -- under Democrat Durbin's bill the kid who's a U.S. citizen has to pay FULL outside resident tuition fees to the NJ college he wants to attend while ALL illegal aliens illegally residing in NJ get reduced in-state college fee rates.

Do you think that would be news to them? The fact they are still here proves the laws don't mean squat.If they are licensed at least we have a photo , and prints and hopefully an address.Right now we have nothing and they are still driving and if they commit a crime we have no idea who they are. Its time to face reality. All Bush and company would have to do to get rid of the illegals is give them 6 months grace period to get back to there country of origin and if they had no money turn themselves in and we would get them back to their country of origin. There is no need to round them up and search for them. Then they would be allowed to apply like everyone else for citizenship. If after 6 months they were found they would permanently be barred from citizenship along with any in their immediate family, no questions asked and deported.

The other day I had to call my cell phone provider to ask a question and what really ticked me off is that now you have to enter 1 for English, and 2 for Spanish. What happened to our default language????? Why do I now have to make a choice? They should make the second language the choice and English as primary. Sprint sucks.

You are correct -- American English has many words that have been contributed by immigrants from all over the world throughout the years. But the words/slang contributed are included in what today is called American English. That is the national language of this country and that is the unifier -- one common language. Speak as many other languages as you wish. But THE common language of this country is and will be American English.

In high school, I knew a Canadian kid who was here on a green card who had a NJ driver's license. I always assumed that non-citizens who are here legally can get one in almost any state.

As long as you are here legally and can prove who you are (so that we aren't providing you a potentially false ID in giving you a license), you should be able to get one.

The article doesn't say one way or the other whether illegal immigrants are included. If they are, that is wrong. One part of government should not be undermining another part. The DMV licensing people who are breaking our laws clearly does that.

It's arrogance to expect people who come here to be able to converse with those around them? Sounds like a reasonable request to me. The problem is not that they don't speak english exclusively (speak spanish all you want amongst family and friends), the problem is when I go to a restaraunt or something and the person I'm trying to deal with barely speaks enough english to communicate. The problem is these people can ONLY communicate with family and friends.

As you said, many countries speak two languages, but they are not two separate languages spoken in two separate populations, but are the native language and a second (usually english) spoken by the majority of the population, and that is very different than the situation we have here.

Who gives a crap what language people speak to each other privately. When it comes to addressing strangers it must be in english otherwise know one is under any obligation to understand them. Too friggin' bad if they don't or won't speak english. When I go out of the country I'm expected to speak their language........What's good for the goose is good for the gander.........

My family speaks Polish amoung themselves but, english in public. My grandparents came over to America on a boat and learned to speak and write english. We don't demand business to have their menus in Polish. We don't need intructions for products in Polish. We don't need the phone to say press 2 for Polish. English had already taken hold in this country over the various languages of the Native American Indians because the Indians did not have a WRITTEN language. Sequoyah was the first American Indian to try to put together a written language for his tribe.

You are using an example that PROVES exactly why we need ONE common language -- the Indians had multiple languages (as YOU seem to want) and sign language was the only way they could communicate between tribes. Do you want multiple languages here and we all go around using sign language?

...Sequoyah and many other Cherokees enlisted on the side of the United States under General Andrew Jackson to fight the British troops and the Creek Indians in the war of 1812, under Major Ridge. This was where Sequoyah first had the idea for a Cherokee writing system. While serving in the US army during the Creek War (1812-1814) the idea blossomed. He noticed that the American soldiers were writing letters home, writing and reading orders, and recording the events of the war as they happened. Sequoyah realized that a written language could be very beneficial to the Cherokee.

Sequoya was amazed at how the white man communicated through written language. He decided to dedicate most of his life to make a system of writing for his people. After the war, he worked for many years developing the characters. Each of the 85 characters Sequoyah created, stands for a syllable in the Cherokee language. During the years of the development, he spent a great deal of this time on Spring Place Plantation, owned by his good friend Rich Joe Vann. He completed the writing system in 1821, after 12 years of hard work. Sequoya wanted his writing to be used for his people to record their ancient tribal culture.


In 1821, the Cherokee Nation reviewed and adopted the syllabary. The syllabary is remarkable complete and no additions have ever been made. Rich Joe Vann bought a printing press and gave it to Sequoya. He also imported press-men, engravers, type-casters and labor from Europe, to assemble the press and teach the Cherokees how to use it.

Disenchanted with the movement towards nationalism, Sequoyah left the Old Cherokee Nation in Georgia in 1821 and moved to Indian Territory in Arkansas, arriving in 1822. By 1825 much of the Bible and numerous hymns had been translated into Cherokee, it was only a matter of months before thousands of Cherokees were literate, able to read and write their own language. In a few short years one man had achieved a means of communication that had taken other civilizations thousands of years to accomplish. Use of the language spread quickly through the Cherokee Nation. Anyone who could speak the Cherokee language could learn to read or write in two weeks. Thousands of Cherokee began to use Sequoyah's invention on a daily basis and the syllabary gave the nation the ability to create the first American Indian newspaper.

In recognition of this contributions, the Cherokee Nation awarded Sequoyah a sliver medal struck in his honor and a lifetime literary pension. He later left Indian Territory for Mexico (now East Texas), where the Texas Cherokees had accepted land grants from Mexico, under Cherokee Chief John Ross. Sequoyah died in the Republic of Texas in 1843, near present day Tyler, Texas. The giant sequoia trees and Sequoia National Park in California are named after him.
