To me this symbolizes how absurd the civil rights movement in America has become. There are real problems in our most destitute black communities - bad schools, poor parenting, gangs, crime, etc. Instead of speaking out against these actual problems, the Sharptons and Jacksons of America converge on Jena, LA to voice their support for a bunch of thugs who beat the shit out of a white kid because he was white. If these kids are the latest poster boys for the civil rights movement, then just declare the movement to be over.

Well thought out comments. The problem with Jackson and Sharpton is that they only show up at the same time the tv cameras do. They could care less about helping their own people unless there's some publicity they can milk out of it.

That's very true. They are professional race baiters -- as long as one of the races involved is white. We have a lot of problems in L.A. with minority on minority crime and you won't see Jackson or Sharpton or Cong. Maxine Waters anywhere in sight.

Look at those 4 college kids in Newark and that horrendous murder/rape that happened. Because it was minority on minority -- the racebaiters like Jackson and Sharpton were no where to be seen even though 3 were brutally murdered.

They do such a tremendous disservice to their own people when they have the ability to be able to do so much more for them -- but they won't. Jackson is a professional extortioner and large corporations would pay him big bucks in settlement if he did not accuse them of some form of what he said was racism on their part.

I'm with you on this. The events are murky. Lots of anger and distrust of the the system. Lots of conflicting accounts of events. It's a hard story to follow.

The one thing that seems certain is that 6 black kids beat one white kid till he was unconscious.

After that take your pick as to what the truth is -- there seems to be numerous versions of events before and after the beating of the white kid.

I've heard so many different versions of the events at Jena but one thing I heard about and that the school ought to stop right now is having that tree at the school be referred to as the "white tree" -- not a good idea.

The issue that seems to have drawn the protesters has to do with prosecutorial discretion. From what I have heard, there were several fights leading up to the 6 Black kids attacking the White kid. In at least one incident that I heard about, several White kids attacked one Black kid. I don't remember hearing any report as to how that case was resolved but I don't think it resulted in a charge of attempted murder!

This is a classic case of authorities failing to take decisive action thereby allowing a situation to spiral out of control. The school principal had the right instincts in trying to expel the kids that hung the noose. He/she rightly perceived it as a threat akin to other threats that, in this age of Columbine, Va. Tech, terrorism and zero tolerance, should have been dealt with promptly and harshly.

As I have said before, when it comes to the judicial system, Whites and the well to do get understanding and compassion; minorities and the poor get justice.

Is it not true that these six black kids beat up one white kid? Why should they be freed if they are guilty of committing this atrocity? Should these kids not be punished for their crimes? If the goal is to prevent them from being tried as adults, then I'm fine with that. However, if the goal is to dismiss the charges altogether, then I have a serious problem with that.

Ordinarily I would agree that this is grandstanding on their part but to look at the event of the fight alone is myopic.

BTW, the kid that was "beaten" so badly that the black kids were charged with attempted murder was released from the hospital and returned to school the same day.

According to TV news reports he went to a school function later that evening, he didn't return to "School the same day"(classes) as you seemingly are trying to imply. Even if he did return to classes (which he did not) my take is he's not a pussy, he picked himself up and started living his life again. Good for him.

The kids were guilty of attempted murder. Agitation is the stock in trade of men such as Rev. Jackson and Rev. Sharpton, who are said to have accumulated large fortunes based on exercise of the power they claim to have based on their ability to manipulate people who view themselves as victims.

What they are staging here is a PR event to reinvigorate their franchise. They also seem to claim that blacks have a license to commit crimes, in this case a vicious criminal assault without being subject to consequences. The "student-athlete" supposedly brings a prior bad record with him being habitually a thug, having been convicted of three previous assaults.

Six on one, colored fun. Imagine if six white boys had assaulted a black, striking him from behind and then hitting him with foreign objects, kicking and stomping on him. Why I'll wager that the Reverend Jackson and the Reverend Sharpton would be outraged and demanding the most severe punishment for them. Would a claim of provocation have been sufficient to exonerate the white assailants if they were the perpetrators? The black boy "Called me a Honky a couple of weeks ago, so I got my gang and beat him."

I would hope that these vicious black criminals are incarcerated for a long time to right this grievous worng, and that justice is not obstructed by this intimidation and coercion.

You try to be sympathetic towards them but they just keep giving you more reasons to dislike them. I understand that they are just playing the hand that they were dealt, but enough is enough. I have seen my city destroyed many times over. Everything they are given is destroyed and they have no incentive to work or earn or be productive. In the community anything that is a positive in society is look down upon.

These people need to be a productive part of society before anything can be fixed and that starts with them being treated equally. No special treatment. No welfare. They need to take responsibility for themselves and quit making excuses. The liberals need to quit making excuses for them. In America, if a group wishes to institute change they must make their voices heard. High profile protests with large crowds is a tried and true method. The activist spirit should be applauded. Those who disagree with the message are able to counter-protest if in fact they share the same level of fervor as those they oppose.

Given the situation what card would they play? Race was obviously a huge factor in this ordeal, and to play that card so to speak would be an abject ignorance of the facts.

Thats not to say these two guys don't turn things that aren't particuarly race related into things that are, but I find it wrong to put them down for it in this instance, and an example of bias.
