President Bush is not going to bomb Iran -- unless an "accidental" incident forces his hand, according to foreign policy think tanker Steve Clemons, who laid out his case in Wednesday's Salon article, "Why Bush Won't Attack Iran."

This is one for the books.
It looks like the one person stopping us from going in and doing a pre-emptive first strike on Iran as Cheney wants to do is -- drumroll -- President Bush.

Apparently the big war boy in the White House is Dick Cheney and Bush is listening -- for a change -- to calmer, more saner minds like Sec. of Defense Gates and Condoleeza Rice who are both against a pre-emptive first strike on Iran.

Now we'll now see who really sits in the Oval Office and holds the power -- George W. Bush or Dick Cheney.

I wonder how much of a part Cheney played in the lead up to the war in Iraq.
The buck stops with Bush but the one who made zillions in war profiteering were Cheney and Halliburton. How much of a part for pushing us into the Iraq war did Cheney really play. Every day Cheney would meet Bush for lunch and Cheney screened everything before it hit Bush's desk. I'm not absolving Bush by any means but I sure would love to know who really pulled the strings for the war in Iraq.

Suppose we start impeachment with Dick Cheney.

"It looks like the one person stopping us from going in and doing a pre-emptive first strike on Iran as Cheney wants to do is -- drumroll -- President Bush."

Bush is still nursing that painful bite in the ass he got from the last time he listened to Cheney and Chalibi.

This might also have something to do with those 600 long range cruise missils that Iran claims to have pointed at Israel.

Of course shooter cheney is for a first strike, hell he used a first strike on his friend while hunting. Not to mention a couple bottles of bourbon as the build up to the first strike.

Look for a manufactured terrawrist attack in the US any day now. The bomb crater will contain a piece of metal, shockingly pristine and undamaged, with the words "Made in Iran" in crayon. Of course the "N" in Iran will be backwards.

We got "Bad Week", "Boyd", and "Cooper"---what's the "In" for?

Good call, Pinche.

"in" is probably a catch all for inane, insane, inconsequential, infection, indecent, incomprehensible . . .

Given the high level of delusion and stupidity inherent in the Bush Administration, a strike against Iran, Bulgaria or Cincinatti can't be ruled out.

"And here's another reason not to trust the neocons: "Before the Iraq war began, its neoconservative architects argued that conferring power on Iraq's Shiites would serve to undermine Iran because Iraq's Shiites, controlling the faith's two holiest cities, would, in the words of then Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, be 'an independent source of authority for the Shia religion emerging in a country that is democratic and pro-Western.' Further, they argued, Iran could never dominate Iraq, because the Iraqi Shiites are Arabs and the Iranian Shiites Persian. It was a theory that, unfortunately, had no connection to reality."

"a strike against Iran, Bulgaria or Cincinatti(sic) can't be ruled out.
"

Cincinnati is good.

Bush Won't Bomb Iran.

But Cheney Will...

Suppose we start impeachment with Dick Cheney.

Suits me.

Cheney is one of the best arguments against the impeachment of Bush.

I have a question for the conservatives out there.
Why do you think Iranians shout "Death to America"?
I'd appreciate it if you'd use what few brain cells you have and give me an honest answer.

So, we should decide and make known what response will come if Israel does try to provoke an attack with some kind of subterfuge or if they attack Iran themselves. We have 160,000 troops next door in Iraq who are potential targets of Iran if an attack goes down so we have important reasons to demand that Israel not do anyting provocative.

......Muslims are mad about everything, they're probably just on their way home from work, yelling their fool heads off..........

......the Vice Police probably told them that "Death to America" means "honey, what's for supper?".....

""****** Why do you think Iranians shout "Death to America"?""

For the answer one need only take a look at the extreme right wing Christian movement. They believe their leadership on topics which really have nothing to do with religion and they believe their way is the only right way. Some have taken it to the extreme of killing doctors. Most don't thankfully but religious extremists are easily manipulated against whatever enemy the leadership chooses.

Muslims aren't that different, they just combine nationalistic feelings with their religious beliefs then combine all that and add in their poverty. Their leaders then direct their anger towards those who they believe are the most likely to attract the population which means....America. The Muslim leadership can't afford for Muslims to do as other nationalities (Like Japan) have done because our culture, if allowed to develop, would replace repressive Muslim society pretty quickly.

no skizziks, you have it all wrong. the iranian people are fun-loving individuals who have access to media from all over the world, who happily live in a free and open society where the rulers don't dictate dress etc. they treat all people equally, including woman. america is the great satan that is trying to take over the world, doing so ever so slowly by pushing our strict and oppressive way of life on other nations.

but seriously, this quote nailed it:

"It would most likely be triggered by one or both of the two people who would see their political fortunes rise through a new conflict -- Cheney and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad." ...

mahmoud imanutjob would benefit tremendously if we were to attack his country. the iranian people are pro-western people being controlled by oppressive assholes. if we attack, this will change, hence imanutjob provoking us. we first started to see the initial signs of revolt/revolution in that country when the UN resolutions were passed. the gov was forced to limit the amount of gas per citizen, sparking outrage, civil unrest, and rioting. such actions, although malicious at first glance, represent the beginnings of a free thinking society.

keep the sanctions up, and make them as harsh as possible. we should never give in to this assholes provakations, unless its our absolute final option.

danni, u could have left out the initial dribble. u hit it on the head here:

"The Muslim leadership can't afford for Muslims to do as other nationalities (Like Japan) have done because our culture, if allowed to develop, would replace repressive Muslim society pretty quickly."

so is it american culture that is the problem? or repressive muslim society?

I guess that was too much to ask.
I think they yell "Death to America" because we blew one of their passenger planes out of the sky.
Oh yeah, and because we crushed their fledgling democracy and replaced it with a dictator who ruled over them for thirty years.

But that's just my opinion.

........you got the facts right but the personalities wrong.......

Rasta

Those things did happen, and the Iranians have legitimate grievances.........

That being said....they also live under the delusion that their evil religion supersedes all human rights.........this is a common state of mind among Muslims, leading them to believe that they have the right to kill people for religious reasons......

But us civilized cognosenti here, know and understand, that any religion that proscribes killing as the appropriate response to a religious proscription......is not only wrong, but anti-human.

But don't worry, as the level of education among Farsi increases, they will come to understand as a nation that Islam is appropriate only for regressive, stone-age cultures.

You didn't have to be an expert to figure that out.

When we didn't find WMD's in Iraq, we squandered the opportunity to use a "pre-emptive strike" against Iran, or any other country for at least a generation.

The best we can hope for is that Iran is stupid enough to send the "Revolutionary Guard" into Iraq to help plant their IEDs which are killing our troops.

That would be a direct "act of war that the US could then respond via an attack.

But even if we caught Iranian soldiers red-handed, I am sure there would be many who would call "foul" and cry "conspiracy" -- that is the unfortunate legacy of mistrust that using preemption in Iraq and getting it wrong has left us with.

"The best we can hope for"

The best?

hope for???

That is why neocon Republicans should never be running this country, especially in these turbulent times. We need leaders who are interested in peace, not leaders who are only interested in war.

But us civilized cognosenti here, know and understand, that any religion that proscribes killing as the appropriate response to a religious proscription......is not only wrong, but anti-human.

I guess we agree that the only difference between christians and muslims is that more muslims actually believe the nutjob craziness in their magic holy book. Anyone who read and believed the bible in a literal sense would be killing non-believers also.
Many say that "The New Covenant" wiped out the crazy shit from the Old Testament, but they have no problem cherry picking Old Testament stuff when it suits their agenda.

Bush Won't Bomb Iran

Naw...he's going to leave it for the French to start.

(I don't have time to read the posts, so my apologies if someone already said this.)

..........there is no difference between them at all, both Christians and Muslims have been conned by insane schitzophrenics hearing voices ......their religious mumbo-jumbo may be different, but in they end they are all delusional.........

.......Hey Rasta.!!!.....who do you think would win an arm-wrestling match....Jesus, Mohammed or Buddha ??.....

Of the indications that Bush has thus far tabled a preemptive strike, Clemons believes "the most significant is that the Cheney wing feels that Bush is not on their side and they're frustrated with that. The fact that the Cheney wing feels they need to tie Bush's hands, 'end run' the president and remove the 'diplomatic course' from the field of options in front of the President is an indication that Bush hasn't decided to bomb."

Bush must be spending more time with Condi lately (anyone check to see if there are any 'stains' on her dresses?).

OCU

"When it suits their (Christian) agenda...."

Oh for the day rational game theory replaces religous conviction as a guide to behavior.

Rational wars and rational hell, with arrogant nonbelievers as willing to push buttons and make others die as anyone else.

"Magic holy book...."

I know what I experience here is not typical of most non-believers, many of whom serioulsy attempt to adopt Christian values, although they are often shy to give appropriate credit.

Dickless Bush is going without Dick! Amazing! maybe he is growing some balls??? Next? Will Dick Cheney be sent on funeral detail like RMN was under Ike???

Attacking Iraq is a failed effort to put the Arabs on notice that Israel can take anything and everything it wants from its neighbors. Good thing we mortgaged our futures for this purpose.

The problem here is Shrub is a fool, an Emperor with No Clothes, a cornered rat who does not want to admit defeat. One drink could put him back over the edge, causing him to push the button. Its so easy to do from the oval office and he has 100,000 acres in Paraguay to retreat to. Crawford sucks anyway.
