100% I doubt that happened though Those beams were typically hardwood, and subfloors not. It's not gonna be that huge a deal. If you have standing water, pump it out, add couple bags of kitty litter on top of it. Soak it right up.

I've been poor. But unlike some people, I chose not to wallow in self pity. I chose to work at making a better life for myself. If that makes me a meanie, well so be it. BUt here's a piece of advice: You can change you life faster than if you wait for the government to do it for you.

As far as the rent house, that wasn't a choice. When I went offshore several years ago (after three years of baking bread and living the "poor life" I realized I couldn't leave that house empty while I was gone. It was out in the country and no one to watch it. So I moved close to a relative in SA who could watch my place and I rented the other since it was paid for.

PS -- before I get another meanie neocon star for owning a house free and clear, I'll point out that I took out a 15 year loan on it over 20 years ago. I guess that was wrong. I should've gotten a 30 year ARM so that I could bitch at the rotten government during those years I was laid off and had to bake bread for a living and not being able to afford my mortgage payments. re the damage in your rental --

If you're careful how you present the claim for the damage to your homeowners' insurance company (I assume you have it for the house with your rentals) you may get them to cover almost all your repair costs. Get your policy out and then get someone who knows how to deal with the fine points and legalese (you've got some lawyer relatives, right?) in your policy. If you admit to flooding it's one thing, if you admit to damage caused by mold/standing water it's another, and there are many variables. THAT's where you need to be careful -- the reason you give your insurance company as to WHY and HOW the damage occurred.

Also, the inspector the insurance company sends out will be a joke and totally on the side of the insurance company so don't accept the first offer. I got my entire roof I had to replace two years ago (long story) totally paid for by my insurance company when initially they said they would only cover 10% and had sent me the 10% check and just about closed the claim. I back at them using a couple sentences I found in my homeowner's policy that I thought proved my point they should cover more and after hassling back and forth for three months they ended up covering the entire cost of the roof.

Important stuff to document/note -- was there any flooding in the part of Texas where your rental homes is located might have caused water damage to the ground and allowed seepage under the house causing dry rot, etc. -- you get the picture. You need to be careful as to what you say (to the insurance company) was the reason for the damage because one thing will be covered and then again another reason will have them shutting the door in your face.

also, make an extra copy of your insurance policy and take it with you so you have a "working copy" to carry around while working on your claim so that your original policy stays clean, and locked away.

As I said, what I wrote was just a suggestion. I asked my insurance company flat outright if they were going to raise my premiums because I made a claim and they said no -- so far they haven't. This is an insurance company that deals primarily with the military and my folks had been with them for like 40 years with only one claim prior to the one I made (and which fact I reminded them of about 30 times when submitting the roof claim) so this insurance company has got in great reputation.

Hopefully like you said, AU, it's only a subfloor or whatever. You don't know what you've got until you pull up the floor but then that's not my area of expertise by a long shot. I just put out some advice I thought might might be helpful to Goat if it turns into a more major project/damage than originally thought.

Just put in Dr. Strangelove now that Liar Liar is finished. I haven't seen that one in a while. I like Kubrick. his 2001: a Space Odyssey is, IMO, the best movie ever made.

The new wireless router works great. I love keeping the laptop in the main room. Allows me to multitask, you know. Warm up pizza, mix a marguerita, blog, and watch a movie all at the same time.

When I moved back to Texas from Georgia I had cleaned my house very thoroughly for its sale. The new owners wanted me to keep the fridge, so I left it there. I cleaned it as if it was brand new. It was literally spotless as I had gone over the whole thing, including shelves with a green scrubbie then later bleach. It was spotless.

As I was going through the house for the last time, I started to have a low blood sugar event from too much insulin or too much activity. (I am diabetic) My neighbor had borrowed my truck, so I was stuck at home. Usually the thing to do in this event is to drink juice or eat something with sugar. I knew the house was literally completely empty, including the fridge which I had scrubbed to a brand new state hours earlier.

For some reason (habit, I guess) I looked in the fridge for something to eat. There right in the middle of the middle shelf was a York's peppermint patty. That would take care of my need for sugar, but it freaked me out that it was there since I had just finished cleaning the fridge a few hours earlier. But what is really freaky about this is that Jenny's favorite candy was the York's peppermint patty. And she always kept a few in the fridge because she liked them cold.

That sent shivers down my spine and I am getting goosebumps on my arm right now just relating this story.

I could tell a story that makes me believe she is there.

She is there. It's just that so often people are not receptive or open to the signs those who have passed away used to communicate with you. Don't brush off small signs of communication as odd or not possible.

When my Dad first passed away in 1994 for the first few days after he died we could smell his shoepolish in the bedroom -- something we hadn't smelled in a long time. He had a small wooden shoepolish box in the closet and the smell was never that strong even when he used it but for those first few days that shoepolish (alhthough covered and still inside the kit) was a definite distinctive smell in the room. I don't know if it was some odd reason because his shoes being polished were always a big thing with him (USMC spit polish all his shoes long after he left the Corp) and that was his way of saying he was there or what.

Sometimes there will be -- for what reason I don't know -- electrical types of signs -- of lights that go on or radio suddenly turning on. Often times it will happen in the wee hours of the morning like 2-3 a.m. This isn't an ongoing thing -- often happens right after someone passes away -- but there are signs and as I said you need to be open minded and receptive to receiving them.

I had a dream one night that I was riding in the back of a taxicab and my dad just showed up. He told me how proud he was of me, how much he knew I'd miss him, to take care of my mother, and not worry about him. We talked and reminisced for what seemed like a couple of hours about many things we'd experienced.

I woke up and my pillow was drenched in tears. When I put my bathrobe on and walked to the door of my hotel room to get the paper there was a telegram under the door. It read, "I am so sorry to have to imform you that your father passed away at 5 am this morning following a sudden heart attack. Please call home ASAP"

It was shortly after 5 am when I woke up to that news

I don't doubt for one minute that it was your Dad. There are just too many stories told by people who are very reliable types who tell of communication/occurences with "the other side" that you just can't shove it off as a dream or a odd coincidence. Maybe it's because we want to believe it also but there's much more to it than that. Besides, who wants to believe that this is it and that you will never see your loved ones who passed away ever again. If nothing else, it helps you deal with the loss a little easier while you're here and they are not.

That's true, I'm sure. I have a great aunt in Spokane whom I met for the first time last summer. She is the last surviving sibling of my grandfather's family. She is 89 YO and loves the computer and email. I showed her several blogs (including this one) which she had never seen before and she was beside herself. SHe is such a sharp lady even though she uses a walker. I'm so glad she got to take advantage of this technology.

You will never have communication like that explained only in logical terms. It's more a combination of belief, some hope, some reasoning, and open mind, and trust in something else besides just the here and now -- plus a resignation to the fact that there are many things in life that can never be fully and logically explained in a scientific way but still exist.

You can choose to believe and enjoy the feeling and comfort that she's still around you and always will be, or, you can choose to dismiss that idea as illogical simply because it doesn't make sense. I don't know you, Goat, but I'm willing to guess you'd be willing to go with the first one even though you might hate to admit it.

The anger of the few hundred pro-bush war supporters was amusing with the most memorable one for me of a middle aged women yelling at the crowd "How many Abortions have all you liberals had anyway". ( I really wanted to ask this lady if she ever asked GOD how many Mis-carriages he allows in a single day in the world and if she is really angry with him) Pretty telling of how out of touch these people are with reality.
