Governments need to scrap subsidies for biofuels, as the current rush to support alternative energy sources will lead to surging food prices and the potential destruction of natural habitats, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development will warn on Tuesday.

Back to the drawing board I guess. I was never to supportive of ethanol in the first place. We need cleaner and cheaper fuels.

We need a Manhattan Project sized effort to get off of fossil fuels not only for economic reasons, but national security reasons as well.

One promising new technology I read about involved mixing water with aluminum salt pellets. Produced enough energy to power a fuel cell. Reusable too. Mixed together in a standard auto gas tank too

Well I Think BIO FUEL when used In Conjunction with Other Renewable Energy Sources Should Be The Future Of American Energy, Yes To Include Atomic !

There Will Never Be A One Magic Bullet But A Shot Gun Wide Spread Pattern To Accomplish Energy Indecency.

So This Is Wrong, They Need To Do More To "ALL" Energy Sources In My Opinion The Corporation Are Behind This Either To Maintain The Status Quote Or They Want To Invest And Corner The Market On What Ever They Support.

"Energy Indecency"

Film at 11!

See the salt water thread. It's back in the news again.

A tinkerer, in the great tradition of Edison it seems, has stumbled upon something that surprises serious science, whilst looking for something completely different (as all lovely scientific accidents seem to manage to do).

If it actually turns out to have merit, clear your pipelines - we will be redirecting motor vehicle fuel manufacturing into creating hydrogen a lot sooner than anticipated (and it would suck to be the fuel cell guys at the moment). Oil will drop in value as it will last until eternity given we relieve it of having to support the majority of the planet's vehicle fleet. Iraq and Iran, and the whole ME cock-up will be yesterday's news in less than a generation (might suck to be Israel as well).

Not to be vindictive, but the monstrosities to consumption being built in the Arabian deserts presently would be a fine reminder for the next few hundred years of their ransom demands for the last 30 years. I would go tour them, along with the pyramids, and come away with the same impression of each I think.

Great now Exxon is going to claim it owns the whole Pacific Ocean.

Regarding saltwater, do you think that if we actually used that as an energy source, we would start paying more for drinking water and end up running out eventually?

It's the same thing with ethanol. Start using it for fuel, all of a sudden it costs twice as much to feed your cattle and the cost of meat and milk goes up. People need to think twice about coming up with new forms of energy - the real answer is conservation because there is no way we can sustain the current levels of wastefulness. Looking for a way to do so is stupid.

On a serious note, it is good to see an opinion that isn't biased. This report gives the facts as they are: while biofuels do cut down on the production of carbon dioxide, the production of the fuel has a detrimental effect on devoloping countries and is quite costly to produce when compared to the reduction in carbon dioxide.
