A California gray whale that was harpooned and shot with a machine gun off the western tip of Washington state has died, officials said. Coast Guard Petty Officer Kelly Parker said five people believed to be members of the Makah Tribe shot and harpooned the whale Saturday morning.

Vernon? RiR? RoC? Tadowe? BL2? - 'fess up, dudes.

Taking the salmon, Otter, Sea loin, and whale away from the west coast tribes was like taking the buffalo away from the plains indians.
If anyone has a right to kill whales, It would be the coastal indians. As long as they are not commercializing it.

Taking the salmon, Otter, Sea loin, and whale away from the west coast tribes was like taking the buffalo away from the plains indians....

Yeah, but I don't recall the American Indians using a Gatling gun when hunting herds of buffalo.

A machine gun? That doesn't sound right.

Ohhh it doesn't say machine gun in the story, but a high powered rifle. Anyway they should know better, even if it was destroying their gear.....Leave it to rcade to sensionalize!

Everyone knows you're supposed nuke the whales, not strafe them with machine gun fire.

nexusone.shackspace.com

That's not very sporting now is it?

What? Don't people fish with dynamite anymore?

Nuke the gay baby whales for Jesus!

Well, the high power rifle is a machine. That is one hell of a stretch boy but just what I would expect from a lib.

This isn't standard behavior. Probably a just a fluke.

In this day and age, with so much food available why do we still need to kill whales? For the f*cking sport of it?

"Probably just a fluke"

HAHA!!!

Whales are reputed to be highly intelligent.

Lets just equip each whale with his (or her) own machine gun and everybody takes their own chances.

Second posting on back page.

These natives should modernize and kill whales the easy, clean way, like the US Navy does with "Hi Tek Sonar"!!!

Chris,
What does it matter what they shoot it with? As long as they are harvesting it for their own private use.
Besides, the media says a machine gun, but you know how the corporate media is, it was probaby a semi-automatic 22 or something.
The corporate media loves playing up negitive gun stories to help foreward the agenda of gun control.

well you cant bitch about the danes and the japs killing whales and allow these idiots to kill them too.

Ban whale hunts totally its not necessary.

Round here we use dynamite.

that might have been funny say... about 10 years ago. Today that gives you a possible interrogation by the fbi and if they do find you possess those little sticks of fun you go to gitmo as a possible terrorist

They have treaty rights. Not any different than the indians that live farther from the coast who have treaty rights to hunt also.

We didn't loose sowe don't have any rights. Does that sound right?

doesn't surprise me at all. natives have been extremely selfish with the environment for decades. They talk a good game in front of the tv cameras but watch what they do, it's a much different story. Travel up to any of the salmon streams in B.C. / Washington and you'll find them using shopping carts to haul away tons of spawning salmon every year.. they just don't give a shit.

they don't deserve much respect when it comes to the environment, dont buy into act when you see them on tv, its just a show.

hunters and fishers have done more to protect the environment the modern native.

audrey - i come from salmon territory - the salmon that spawn out as you say, go on to die - that's what they do. what is a crying shame is the dead salmon that go to waste because of agencies such as the fda. don't blame it all on the natives.

neah bay, macah indians, on the other hand (top of the world), are quite a selfish tribe. their reservation looks like a third world country and they share NONE of their catches - i've seen halibut the size of a volkswagen there, yet when you go into the store all they have for fish for sale is imported.

i must say it is very good to be at the top of the food chain.

Maybe they should open a whale casino. Instead of shooting them, they can shake em down for $$.

I don't get that. There are people all over the world who can prove that their family sustained itself for generations by whaling (after all, there is a reason whales are endangered).

I'm not sure I understand the sovereignty status of Native Americans. Maybe they can decide not to participate in anti-whaling treaties if they want. Seems to me that a sovereign people should be able to do that.

But if you think whaling is wrong, I don't understand how you can exempt one group when there are many diverse groups who can make similar claims regarding their historical attachment to killing these animals.

well you cant bitch about the danes and the japs killing whales

Whales are killed by Norwieners and Icelanders. But I think that Danes just sit around drinking beer waiting for their government check.

And it has been that way for centuries.

The sweet story of Indians living in symbiotic harmony with nature is a myth: pure crap, spread by Rousseau and others.

They dramatically altered the environment for thier own ends.

There's good evidence that the Great Plains was created by centuries of mass burning, with the only goal of driving herds of buffalo.

"This seminar will examine the development of the anthropological discourse of the savage in order to learn how the Noble Savage myth played an important role in the history of anthropology and in the struggle between supporters and opponents of racial equality, and more generally to consider the ways in which anthropological discourse can be manipulated for specific political purposes."

While I may agree that there are bullshit myths created around tribal people, referring to them as "savages" was also a political tool. That this course seems to want to dispell the myth of the "noble savage" without dispelling the myth that these people are "savages" in the first place seems comically one sided.

This group of Indians are in deep shit. The tribal Leaders are pressing charges to the fullest extent of their law. When that is done the Federal Govt. may do the same.

There is a process to go through to hunt and kill a whale. They must have a permit and they are required to be monitored by Federal observers. These guys didnt do any of that. They went out and killed a Grey whale for the sport.

There is no need for anyone to kill a whale in this part of the world. If they insist on doing it because of Indian tradition, they should be doing it the way it was done over 200 years ago. Use a canoe and spears.

Then again didnt we used to hunt Indians with rifles? Is that considered tradition? Guess not!

JeffInD - other indigenous rites of North American first peoples includes ritual sacrifice of virgins. Should folks in Mexico and Central America be allowed to toss young women off pyramids? If not, why not?

It doesn't even sound like English.

Bingo. When making treaties with the U.S., many tribes, especially in the Northwest, explicitly retained the right to hunt and fish in or on their historic hunting grounds. That's why you still see tribe members netting salmon on the Columbia, where that style of fishing is illegal for anyone else. I did research years ago for a professor where I reviewed and catalogued every treaty that involved retention of hunting and fishing rights. (Most of them were later given up for further concessions, or just sort of abolished by the U.S., but many tribes still have these treaty rights.)

machine gun or 1800's bolt action rifle. The media thinks all guns are millitary weapons. What about all these "semi auto assault type pistols" running amok in america?

It would appear the .50 caliber is the weapon of choice for the Makah....

1999...
"Time grows ever shorter, though..... and the first of the "friendly whales" of Baja has fallen to the armor-piercing .50 caliber military assault gun of this so-called "traditional" hunt...."

Better be glad they are not Michael Vick!

You guys are over-reacting. The great Manitou said it's every first nations persons' right to paddle out to sea and greet the grey whale, symbol of their anscestors, then strafe it with semi-automatic weapons fire.

Then again didnt we used to hunt Indians with rifles? Is that considered tradition? Guess not!

I left a space out between so and we.
You couldn't possibly be that fuc**** stupid!

Sorry to say, Snipe, it still ain't English. Even sorrier to say, it still don't make no sense no how.
