Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Wednesday, September 05, 2007

Will Chandler said he knows he should not have left campus when he and two friends left Wheeler High School for lunch a week ago.

"I was like, Alright, I'm going to get in trouble.' I didn't even know the knife was in there. I completely forgot about it and then they pulled it out," said Chandler.

A school officer found a Swiss Army knife in Chandler's car's console. Under the school's zero tolerance policy it was an automatic suspension for Chandler.

What the fuck. It's not like he was playing tag or dodgeball...

COBBCOUNTY SCHOOL...The following code provisions apply to offenses that students commit while on school
property at any time, engaging in or attending a school-sponsored event, or while using the
school technology resources. As used in this Code of Conduct:
A. School property includes, but is not limited to:
3. Any bus or other vehicle used in connection with school functions and activities,
including but not limited to, school buses, buses leased by the Cobb County School
District and privately-owned vehicles used for transportation to and from school
activities; and
4. Personal belongings, automobiles or other vehicles which are located on school
property.

I was wondering how they even knew of the knife. I guess there are no private property rights at the school.

Michael Vick planted the knife.

Seems that an old saying and one not used often enough. That being-"Knee jerk screwballs" applies here.

It has also been heard on occasion the these people that apply such a charge are "Parading HUA".

How about resolving this unhygienic condition and getting a grip on reality.

Breaking news! Everybody with a car at Wheeler high school suspended for having a tire iron!

Too bad he is not in a teacher's union.

Everybody with a car at Wheeler high school suspended for having a tire iron!

There are a few high schoolers in my martial arts class. They could do a lot more damage with their own body than this kid could have done with a Swiss Army knife. Are they going to ban martial artists next?

A real swiss army knife?

Not just a picture of one?!

OMFG! Shoot him!! Shoot him!!!

The hysteria is overwhelming at times.

A frickin' felony charge?

Too retarded fer words.

Is there a zero tolerance policy on common sense or sommat?

Be Well.

Zero tollerance policies mean nobody has to think and nobody is responsible for anything.

Kid's screwed for life? Too bad, not the school's problem. It's policy, sorry.

Funny a WSchool suspends for a knife but they allow compases in school and that can kill just as easily as a knife. Oh how about those rulers with that blade thingy on the end of the doohicky(God I am stupid) where You can cut paper by ripping it. That can kill just the same. Oh they have chemicals in School someone could build a bomb and blow people up. Fucking Dingleberries.

Larry

I owned this SWISS ARMY KNIFE and gave out a couple as Christmas gifts too. They're great.

I know a Swiss Army knife isn't quite a machete (the knife of choice here in Los Angeles schools) but zero tolerance is zero tolerance and rules are rules.

the problem was not with the administrators of the school or the police, but with the law.

numbnuts should not have left school, something tells me there is more to this story, like this kid was up to something.

and no you have no privacy at school.

rules are rules.

Until they are changed.

the policy at the school is spelled out in black and white and describes exactly this kind of object as prohibited at the school, first offense is 10 day expulsion and reporting to public safety, presumably the police.

we have not heard the school's side of this and something tells me the kid was doing something stupid.

probably went off campus to get drunk or something, cameback on campus and got caught goofing around with the knife.

www.cobbk12.org

see page 16

ALOT OF assumptions TruthHurts. How many times has a student went camping some weekend and left their gear in the trunk. We all know many campers take knives AXES etc etc etc. Should they be suspended for being forgetful?? I don't think so. It would be one thing if He was using it and carrying it around(I Carried around 6 knives while attending 4 Years of High School nobody said a thing because they all knew I had them) School systems of today royally fucking suck. Sad to say but they do. True there have been many mass murders of Students by fellow students. The enforcement bit has gone wacko IMnot so humble Opinion.

Larry

This is so assinine. I used to go out to lunch every day in high school, which wasn't allowed. The thought that a teacher would have the right to search my car if I had been caught never crossed my mind - or the teachers' for that matter as nobody who was caught had their car searched.

Not only that, but a Swiss Army knife is just a tool. None of these school massacres have involved a pocket knife. Does the school have a baseball team and is the equipment kept in the school? Put a baseball bat next to a pocket knife and ask anyone which they'd rather have in a fight and see how many people pick the knife.

"probably went off campus to get drunk or something, cameback on campus and got caught goofing around with the knife."

No, the story clearly says they searched his car and found it on the console. It was not on him.

Sure, suspend him for leaving campus. But charge him with a felony for having a tool in his car? Pure hysterics coming from people (police and school officials) who are trusted to know better.

hey 19 assholes hijacked some planes with box cutters, you know tools, that is why there are rules and regulations.

again, we dont have the school's side of the story only the kids side as reported.

the story just stinks.

why was his car searched? it doesnt follow logically that it should have been searched if as the story implies the kid was not around the knife when he got in trouble, ie it wasnt in his locker, wasnt in his backpack nor no him in school.

if he was caught coming back onto campus and the school saw the knife on the dashboard, well that doesnt quite jive with what is reported in the story.

something just doesnt make sense.

i agree that it is absurd that this kid gets a felony charge for this but again that tells me something else is going on here.

personally i totally support no weapons at all at school, they have not purpose there, and only result in something stupid happening.

but hey that is the same argument i have for gun control so I am sure I will be slammed by those who think we should arm all the kids, that way no trouble will happen.

Every Vehicle should have some sort of knife or cutting device for emergency repairs. EVer have to cut a radiator hose off the barb to get it off?? Ever have to cut some duct tape to cover a small hole in a hose?? A Smart driver should always carry a knife.

Larry

a smart student wouldnt bring a kife to school if it was going to result in 10 days suspension.

I would like to hear the school's side of this story.

They can have my toothpick when they take it from my cold dead hand.

Wheeler student suspended for having knife

By YOLANDA RODRGUEZ
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 09/04/07

A Wheeler High School student has been suspended for 10 days and charged with a felony for carrying a weapon onto the campus.

According to an arrest warrant, Wilford Ray Chandler Jr. had a pocket knife with a 2.5-inch blade on Aug. 29, a violation of the school district's weapons policy.

More Cobb news

Jay Dillon, a Cobb schools spokesman, said Chandler left the Wheeler campus about midday -- a violation of the school's rules. When he came back onto the grounds, a school resource officer searched him and his car, which is standard operating procedure when a student leaves campus without permission.

The blade, described in the warrant as a "multipurpose-type pocket knife," was found in the center console of the car.

"He left campus when he wasn't supposed to, and he acknowledged that," Dillon said.

The district's zero tolerance policy dictates that a blade longer than 2 inches gets an automatic 10-day suspension and criminal charges. Smaller blades get a 5-day suspension and may result in criminal charges, Dillon said.

Last year, "dozens" of weapons were found in Cobb schools, he said.

Dillon noted that on Friday a Pebblebrook High School student stabbed another student on campus. That student, a juvenile whose name was not released, was suspended and charged with bringing a weapon to school, aggravated battery and aggravated assault.

The injured student, also a juvenile, was OK, Dillon said.

you can hopefully begin to see the school's sensitivity.

www.aclu.org

of course here they seem to have gone overboard as well.

Sorry TruthHurts I dont. I believe the School is in the wrong on this. Sorry the School systems of today FUCKING SUCK.

Larry

Well it is Cobb County GEORGIA.. home of the f'in retards..

I'll bet if Adam had killed the snake in the garden of Eden with a Swiss army knife these retards would have it as a piece of required school equipment.

For the love of christ people get f'in real.

Your state is already perceived as inbred don't further the notion that we are correct.

you can hopefully begin to see the school's sensitivity

Sure. So search every student. Right?

Sounds like public opinion goes against public school policy. I hope some board seats are in question because of crap like this.

well larry I think you are jumping to conclusions.

i would like to hear the school's side of the story.

this is a clear school policy, crystal clear.

the school has a history of weapons problems including a stabbing.

we only have this kids word that he was up to no good.

the felony, absolutely that is fucked up, however something smells fishy here.

you can hopefully begin to see the school's sensitivity

Sure. So search every student. Right?

nope, but according to policy, those kids caught leaving campus and coming back on. the school has a legal responsibility for these kids under their care, but who cares, right in this day of personal responsibility and all, the school should turn a blind eye to the kids leaving campus for whatever reason.

correction

nope, but according to policy, those kids caught leaving campus and coming back on ARE SUBJECT TO SEARCHES.

It's the SCHOOL That is fucked up TruthHurts don't You get that Yet?? They lackl the cognative skills necessary toi function properly in todays society because they fucking lack common sense. IT WAS IN HIS FUCKING CAR CONSOLE a Vehicle should always carry a knife of some kind for emergency repairs. If this is unacceptable I am sorry. It was not like He had the fucking thing in His pocket.

Larry

sorry larry the facts in the case are.

kid leaves campus and returns

kid has a knife in his car

school policy is clear NO KNIVES in school, including your car.

school has a history of kids bringing knives and weapons to school

last year a kid was stabbed at the school(or was it the school district?)

those are the facts.

conjecture based on one side of the argument is that the kid was not doing something stupid or provacative or causing trouble with the knife, right now we only have the kids word for it.

yes the school is being strict, and the felony thing is absurd, but the kid did something stupid

nope, but according to policy, those kids caught leaving campus and coming back on ARE SUBJECT TO SEARCHES.

not on school property.

ruthHurts O don't give a shit about the violent History if a Person and that includes a student can not have ONE KNIFE in their vehicles for emergency repairs then we got some fucked up BULLSHIT. It was in His console NOT ON HIS PERSON. Yes You can read the swchool policy all day long that does not give them the right to dictate what a person has in their personal property. It would be way different if We was talking about on their body or in a locker.

Larry

Thats not a school - it is a trap! This is so stupid. His car is a huge weapon, cars are real killing machines but they are ignored. Schools are test beds for these kinds of crippling thoughts and deeds. For future use on the rest of us.
The kid needs a Presidential Pardon. I wish they would spend as much time trying to find the kids who rip off my house every other month! The system is not interested in real criminals. But I digress.
God help us from self appointed saviors.

Yes even on school property when did the school administration pay for the Vehicles registration when did the school pay the insurance for said vehicle when the school does this then You have a point but You do not have a point becaquse the Parents or the student themselves pays for the stuff for that car so btherefore it still is PRIVATE PROPERTY.

Larry

actually they do have the right to dictate personal property on school grounds.

the kid apparently was stopped in his car on the way back from cutting school.

the knife was in easy reach of the kid if he was in his car.

maybe he was mouthing off to the security guard or fingering the knife or something, again, facts not in evidence as is your the kid was doing nothing premise or the premise that this tool was for maintenance.

zero tolerance is zero tolerance, the school has a history of weapons problems and also a history of strict compliance, why put yourself into that position, unless maybe you were up to no good and I would like to hear the school's side before deciding.

Now You are being stupid TruthHurts. It was sitting in His Console He wasn't fingering it damn dude. What part of this is so hard to grasp by You?? You are usually sharp but not on this. Oh and if I ever do procreate and the School searches My SOn or Daughters car there WILL BE A LAWSUIT they have NO Business being inside of Private Property. PERIOD

wipe the spittle from your screen.

pretend for an instance you were in a position of responsibility, pretend you had any concept of responsibility.

now pretend that you are in charge of a group of say 1,000 children between the ages of 13 and 18. you are responsible for their safety for say 6 hours a day with many moving parts to their environment, physical activity, vehicles, etc.

now pretend over the past year you have confiscated DOZENS of weapons from these kids cause like kids everywhere they are filled with hormones and all sorts of bad ideas.

now pretend last year old billy stabbed old Tommy in the belly button over Tommy's crush on billy's girl mabel.

now pretend some stupid kid blows out of school and comes back and is caught with a knife, should you the responsible adult take the situation seriously?

if old will is such a good kid, why is he cutting school?

Nope what would be the point.

Larry

actually you are not correct, several flight attendants and a pilot or two were killed by them IIRC.

corkscrews dont kill people people kill people.

All zero tolerance laws suck and should be declared unconstitutional as a class. These laws all work so as to circumvent the proper handling of legal matters, especially with regard to the intent of the accused.

ok so you will not hold the school responsible for the environment they control if it results in your child getting stabbed, cause the school has no responsibilty for protecting your child.

i agree with you there

FELONIES IN GA

Definition of a Felony
In Georgia, a felony is most commonly defined as a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than twelve months. It can also mean a crime punishable by death or by life in prison.

See also the sections on repeat offenders and serious violent felonies.

In addition to prison, probation, fines, and restitution, some common punishment for a felony conviction are as follows:

Community Service

Banishment From The Appropriate Judicial Circuit

Loss of the Right to Vote During the Term of the Sentence

Loss of the Right to Own a Firearm for Life

Loss of State and Federal Financial Aid for Your Education

Denied Admission or expelled from State Colleges and Universities for up to a year

Denied Admission to Certain Schools for Life (e.g. Law School)

Precluded From Certain Job Opportunities

Loss of Driving Privileges

....Even if he was a bad student and cut school( who didn't) this seems kind of severe.

agreed

"actually you are not correct, several flight attendants and a pilot or two were killed by them IIRC."

Fine. Nobody who fought back was killed by boxcutters.

I think the American public learned a lesson as far as situations like that go. I would bet that five men trying to take over a plane using Swiss Army knives would have a greater chance being beaten to death than they would taking over the plane. Confiscating tweezers after 9/11 didn't save any lives.

And the the knife wasn't in the school, which contains many more dangerous weapons, so charging this kid with a felony is just utterly ridiculous. If they just suspended him, thought would be fine.

When I was in high school, the entire first day was set aside for things like this.....our VPrincipal actually read them to us as we followed along. What was allowed and what wasn't on school property.

If the school rules say you can't bring in a knife, you can't bring in a knife. Simple. I don't care if its a Swiss Army or Thai Army, don't do it. That should be the end of discussion.

I wonder if having a felony on his record and the limited opportunities that follow would make him more of a criminal.

The family understands the suspension...they have a problem with the felony charges.

If it was my kid, I'd be really pissed too.

GA...Weapons on school property and functions; It is (felony offense) unlawful for a person to carry ANY type of weapon onto or within 1,000 feet of real property owned or leased by any public or private elementary school, secondary school, or school board and used for elementary or secondary education and in, on, or within 1,000 feet of the campus of any public or private technical school, vocational school, college, university, or institution of post secondary education. This code section does not apply to persons who are licensed under code 16-11-129 (Georgia Firearm License) or in accordance with code 43-38-10 (special carry licenses for security guards) when such person carries or picks up a student at a school building, school function, or school property or on a bus or other transportation furnished by the school. (I'm not sure of the total legality actually carrying into school building while picking up or dropping off a student, but it appears to be completely legal since the code does not say anything about not being allowed to enter the building while carrying. I wouldn't loiter around in the halls or cafeteria, but instead make a straight bee line to the office and back in order to drop off or pick up a student if you are required to do so.) This code section shall also not apply to a weapon which is in a locked compartment of a motor vehicle or one which is in a locked container in or a locked firearms rack which is on a motor vehicle which is being used by an adult over 21 years of age to bring to or pick up a student at a school building, school function, or school property or on a bus or other transportation furnished by the school, or when such vehicle is used to transport someone to an activity being conducted on school property which has been authorized by a duly authorized official of the school; provided, however, that this exception shall not apply to a student attending such school; and shall not prohibit any person who resides or works in a business or is in the ordinary course transacting lawful business or any person who is a visitor of such resident located within a school safety zone from carrying, possessing, or having under such person's control a weapon within a school safety zone(this code section does not apply to anyone carrying or transporting a weapon through the zone, or while conducting business while in the zone, or while visiting someone who resides in the zone. Be advised however if you step onto actual school property (while not picking up or dropping off a student), the building or land the building is situated on, then you are in violation even if you have a license. Be careful!) however, it shall be unlawful for any such person to carry, possess, or have under such person's control while at a school building or school function or on school property, a school bus, or other transportation furnished by the school any weapon or explosive compound.(16-11-127.1)

Agreed.

Good conservatism at work here, just pass more and more hardline laws!

Good thing the kid didn't have a ballbat in the car, he would have needed stoning.

Another problem with Zero Tolerance policies is highlighted well by TruthHurts and Formerlib, It teaches that the policy is paramount, not the reasoning behind it.

"It's in the rules, so it must be obeyed" carries the same mental weight as "I was just following orders".

There are bad policies, and unjust policies, and situations where "Zero Tolerance" metes out injustice instead of justice. Zero Tolerance has a history of throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Teaching our kids "Sorry, but its policy" isn't exactly a fast track to creative independent thought.

I would make a political stab here, but I'll refrain.

Probably so. Every word in the story points to that conclusion. *drippin with sarcasm*

And to think I took a rifle to school for show and tell.
My how times have changed.

Twenty years ago when I lived in Atlanta, Cobb county had a severe ignorant redneck problem.

It looks like gentrification has occurred and now the problem is educated dumbasses.

And to think I took a rifle to school for show and tell.

I took a pipe that could unscrew and reassemble to look like a mushroom. I let some fucktard look at it and he got caught with it. I got a 10 day vacation for that one, but no charges pressed, which is a good thing.

I need all my loan money.

This is part of the ever growing societal conditioning that you are not allowed to be armed. Its ridiculous when you watch cops and theres 3 policemen standing there with a guy theyre interrogating and he asks for his cigarettes from his car and they check the fucking cigarette box for weapons. What kind of weapon can you hide in a cigarette box? A little knife? Yeah im sure he was going to challenge 3 guys with guns with a small knife. This is just part of the over the top bullshit.

This guy didnt even have the knife on him. It was in his car? Since when do they search your car when you drive on campus anyway? This headline is all wrong. I almost didnt bother reading it. The suspension, while I disagree, isnt that big of a deal. However, the felony on his record. Thats the real bullshit here. It should be "student gets felony for having swiss army knife in car"

Teaching our kids "Sorry, but its policy" isn't exactly a fast track to creative independent thought.

what it teaches kids is if you are going to commit a felony commit a really heinous crime because you will be punished just as severely for lesser crimes.

BINGO we have a winner. Brought to you by ignorant bastards that have such stellar success with gang violence, school over crowding and over taxation. They fucked up the other parts of the country and have come back to the south to finish the job.

again, you all are jumping to the conclusion that this kids story is the truth. it is one side of the story. I would assume the school has another side.

THis kids side has some holes in it.

he claims it wasnt in his backpack on him his locker etc. but that is moot cause he apparently was stopped in his car.

he could have been acting in a suspicious manner, or aggressive manner.

he claims he is a good non disciplinarian but knowingly left school against the rules.

again, I think the felony thing is stupid, and i would presume once the facts come to light that it will be addressed.

But to jump to the conclusion that this perfect angel is being harrassed by the school is patently unfair.

the school policy was established for a reason, the school has a history of a stabbing and dozens of weapons confiscated.

Ahem...if I may...I usually carry a gold-tipped fountain pen of quality German manufacture. If caught in a position of having to take drastic measures to defend myself, I could just as much damage with my trusty Pelikan as I could with any other blade that knife carried. Or perhaps they were worried the kid would file someone to death or perhaps brandish the tweezers in a threatening manner. Just think of the havoc he could wreak with the magnifying glass. It makes me shudder. I'm surprised they didn't add another concealed weapon charge for the tire iron in the trunk. He should be thankful he didn't have a tool box in the car, or he could have been charged with carrying a concealed framing square.

I think this hysterical overreacting is exactly what Osama and his camel molesting pals had in mind when they dreamed up 9/11. The dragon is eating its own tail.

A Swiss Army Knife isn't a weapon, it's a tool. Yes, it could be MISUSED as a weapon, but that's true of anything. The lug nut wrench in his trunk would make a better weapon than a Swiss Army Knife.

Mindlessly applying laws without regard for intent has filled our prisons to bursting. I can't believe anyone would defend destroying this young man's life so senselessly.

Truthhurts, enough of the "this sounds fishy" bullshit. You repeated it about 5 times. That's the worst kind of FUD throwing intellectual dishonesty. Make a case with facts or opinions, don't just throw out vague dark suspicions expecting everyone to fall in line.

a concealed framing square

A makeshift shuriken perhaps?

I don't know any ninjas named Stanley.

when i was a kid in school..not toooo long ago ...we were encouraged to have something sharp with us at all times..just in case we needed to sharpen a pencil or what have you...mind you..this is in upper mid Canada where it just might mean your life...gotta hate the rabid gangs of squirrels

A makeshift shuriken perhaps?

If you're far enough away to use one, you're probably far enough away to run.

Ninja were good swordsmen, but I'd still rather not go toe to toe with a samurai.

Oh good call. Take away the utility knives but let people like Cho buy guns.

My country is stupid sometimes.

You can thank your ever vigilant president for catapulting the propaganda. "Terrorists are everywhere. You might be one."

For fuck's sake. This is getting loony.

Jubal... I hear you. A good knife is better than sex, sometimes.

Must be all them damn liberals in GA with their touchy feely ways.

What do you say? Let's dial up the Home Shopping Channel and when those redneck knife guys come on, we all chip in and buy this poor kid one of those monster two foot Bowie knives. If Principle Puckerpuss and Officer Nimrod are going to bust the future dentist for having a knife in his car, then let's make sure the kid's got one worth going to jail for.

I just thoughtors something schools require students have sissors for class projects You would think this would be outlawed too cause You can stab someone with a pair of sissors. Or how about a triangle used in drafting class. You could stab someone with that. Or hell schools have yardsticks in classrooms shouldn't they be outlawed to for a potential weapon?? How about outlawing glass in school. No windows cause we all know glass breaks therefore a kid could break a window and stab somebody. Hey better idea lets just outlaw school entirely and have everyone homeschooled that sounds better no need to worry about Johnny stabbing Tommy on the playground cause they would be all inside playing video games.

Larry

gentlemen and ladies...

let me esplain it to you lucy......

when school starts in I would imagine this case as in other cases, the parents are given a handbook that outlines all of the discipline proceedures and consequences.....and they are supposed to sign it and return....and it doesnt matter if the student didnt get it to them and forged the signature...thats the parents problem not the school........

and the signature doesnt mean they agree....because that doesnt matter either....these kinds of things are done at the board level..ELECTED REPS of these people..............

and if these consequences are spelled out, then so be it.....the student and parent knew what would happen.....

NOW HERE IS THE RUB...............what about common sense?

but here is the counter to that..........what if you use common sense and let it go and the next day this same kid sticks another student.....guess who gets his career handed to him.......that teacher that used common sense.........
in other words, I heard all the time...

"WHEN I WAS IN SChool they used common sense when it came to things like this........but here is the rub on that.

"WHEN YOU WERE IN SCHOOL" parents were much more likely to thank the teacher for taking the knife or discovering it where today the lawyer card or the lawyer himslef comes out sooner rather than later.....

and another rub.........you people who think you are education experts because "WHEN YOU WERE IN SCHOOL".................arent the ones who are on the front line when it comes to violence in school...............

oh shit I may have screwed up.....

in a post right after LARRY I just talked about a whole shitfull of RUBBIN.............down boy............LOL

I KNEW You wanted Me BLT it's all clear to any thinking person. You want Me and You want Me very badly.

Larry

larry larry........

I wouldnt screw you with lisa's prick........

aaaaaaaahhhhhhh a good one....and please notice that I didnt say I wouldnt fuck you with lisa's dick.....I didnt want to get too crude so you would know it was a joke......

so I didnt say it that way..........hardy har har.......

BL2... Of course we can trace this back to being such a litigious society.... That doesn't preclude us from judging the merits of the situation.

And it isn't taking the knife, it isnt even the 10 day suspension... Its that there's a "Zero Tolerance" policy that forces the school to charge a kid with a FELONY for keeping a swiss army knife in his car.

Not for using the swiss army knife on a student nor for destruction of school property, not for brandishing the weapon in some sort of lethal manner.

A felony....... for having a swiss army knife....in his car.

Thats not justice..... thats not even a resemblance of justice... And thats the problem

I understand that and as I said a little common sense would have made all this go away the next day or so.....

but you also have to understand how the hands of schools have been tied when they went to the arrest them mode.

there are arrests made all of the time all over the country.......for instance at the middle school that fed me, there would be cop cars there every other week issueing citations to students who had gotten into fights........cited for assault....now isnt that a good life lesson or should we just make them sit after school for a day or two...

which one comes closest to fixing the problem.

I am not taking either side, just putting up the options......

Serves Mom right for putting her kid in a public school! Twain said it nearly 150 years ago. God invented idiots. That was for practice. Then he invented school boards! Honest to God, People. These are the folks who teach our kids to kill their fellow students instead of their principals! They ain't so dumb, are they? And we don't see Osama blowing up boards of ed now, do we? But I will forgive school administrators for their Zero Tolerance policies. It relieves them of any need to THINK!

"But I will forgive school administrators for their Zero Tolerance policies. It relieves them of any need to THINK!"

Quite the contrary, it relieves the schools from being sued. That is the bottom line

But the bonus is that the school pump out good and compliant little sheeples who will gladly queue up for the shearing.

Baa-baa, baby, baa-baa!

RULES ARE RULES...Come on people. Lemmings thats all I'm saying...

All of you know you would be riping the administration and the police had this kid knifed someone..

Good work by the school and the police.

the lady said her son never had any problems before. Yea, you know how many pit bulls never attacked someone before they snap and kill someone.

This COULD have been nothing or something. They took action to ensure that it never is anything. good for them...

ARMY.... there are so many things wrong with your logic it's actually kind of scary.

First.. somehow you made a leap comparing kids in highschool to pit bulls.

Second.. You make a leap that entails equating keeping a swiss army knife in your car to stabbing someone.

Third..and scariest of all... You actually justify police action with an emphatic "COULD"...

My god the wonderful legislation I COULD create if COULD, by itself, was a justifiable reason to legislate.

A high-school dropout who dared to have a laugh at the expense of a Harvard grad student paid for it with his life, a prosecutor said during opening statements Monday in the murder trial of Alexander Pring-Wilson.

Pring-Wilson, 26, is charged with fatally stabbing 18-year-old Michael Colono with a 3-inch utility knife during a street fight in the early morning hours of April 12, 2003.

A Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School sophomore who is accused of stabbing a classmate to death in January brought a pocketknife and fake handgun to school on separate occasions last fall and did not face disciplinary action, despite showing the items to a psychologist at the school, the Sudbury police chief said yesterday.

Odgren was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder charges in the fatal Jan. 19 stabbing of freshman James Alenson, 15, in a school bathroom.

cobb county school district's evolution controversy

yes the school is being strict, and the felony thing is absurd, but the kid did something stupid

Heres another fact, zero-tolerance policies across the nation have come under challenge for this same sort of blind eye towards enforcement of that policy. And in many cases the policy is designed around the fact that administrators are either unable to deal with the problem, or unwilling.

Being "overly sensitive" I'm afraid not a valid defense, unless that defense is insanity. I mean if you walking down a street and some dude stabs you in the back, does that give you the right to kill the next guy walking behind you? thats sounds pretty absurd, but its damn near what the school did to this guy.

Yes it would be great to hear the schools side of the story, but that doesn't neccessarily seem left out of this.

Hmm, well i would of told the person who wanted to search to go screw them selves. I don't care if they feel they have the authority to search me. Unless they have a warrant from a judge or magistrate they can go to hell for all I care. Now if the item was in a locker or in open sight for all to see that is a different thing all together. As for searching my car, good luck and if they try with out my permission or go as far as do it against my wishes, hello jury award. That is a blatant violation of the 4th amendment. now the kid probably didn't know better other than to say "umm ok" to a search but he probably could appeal it and get anything thrown out on the fact that the authorities gained this from a bad search. As far as the "1000 ft safety" regulation, Lets see, how many school shootings or other bad things have it stopped, if you answered none you would be absolutely correct. This is another doosie from the Feds under Klinton, that was forced down our collective throats via the commerce clause in the constitution. As I can remember a large minority in the Supreme court said the commerce clause does not apply to regulations like this, and basically it is not a federal responsibility for this type of legislation. Hopefully lame laws like this and many others that do nothing and only give the impression of actually doing something will be judge unconstitutional in the next few years. Not that I am against safety for our nations children, but this is a state issue not a federal one, and why not create legislation that will actually do some good instead of making citizens lives more difficult.

School policy, whatever. But a FELONY charge against the kid?? Good sweet Jumpin' Jehoshaphat.

Let's look as some facts:

Georgia - About as red a state as there is. (And I'm not just talking about necks.)

Cobb County - Severe republican stronghold, very wealthy.

Cobb County - Would not allow '96 Olympic competitions at Cobb Civic Center because of Olympic tolerance of gays.

Cobb County - Land of Newt Gingrich and Bob Barr.

Cobb County - home of Kennesaw, Ga. where it is the law that homeowners must own a gun.

Any of you boneheaded redstate republicans see a pattern here?

For more info, see www.redstateupdate.com or

www.travisandjonathan.com

home of Kennesaw, Ga. where it is the law that homeowners must own a gun.

What is the problem with that? Actually there is a exception to the rule, if you feel that you don't want to have one in your house, you don't have to. I think this was a ordinance that was adopted in Kennesaw to counter the cities around the country who banned ownership or severely limited access to firearms, i.e. DC or Chicago. It was also a attempt to show that more guns do not mean more crime. If you look at these mega cities that have banned certain firearms or prevent citizens from carry arms have statically higher violent crime rates. That's all it was so don't paint a picture that all people have to own a firearm and need to stand watch in the local militia because that is not what it is.

There must not be very many people at the school that think this kid SHOULD NOT be charged. Why hasn't the student population rallied around him? Didn't the poll of 599 people reveal most (88%?) thought the kid should not be charged? I can't believe that. Because if it were so, all the students need to do is get most of the kids to bring an army knife to school to face the same disciplinary action. hit the school where it hurts. Financially. Suspended students means no funds for those suspended students. Put the school out of business. They could even use it as a lesson about a united front.

"What is the problem with that?"

It's a stupid law.

"Actually there is a exception to the rule, if you feel that you don't want to have one in your house, you don't have to."

Oh, good...so it's a stupid and pointless law.

"That's all it was so don't paint a picture that all people have to own a firearm and need to stand watch in the local militia because that is not what it is."

Yeah, yeah, I know exactly what it was. I was born, raised, and spent most of my 49yrs in Cobb Co. Bottom line, it was a defiant, redneck statement made to counter a perceived threat to their 2nd amendment rights, which were not in jeopardy.

Actually our 2nd amendment rights are in jeopardy everyday, do I agree with the ordinance, hmm well the city council probably could have spent their time more wisely on something else but ehh, a lot of laws are passed that are a waste of time. But if you think the Dems or even most Repubs don't want to take your guns your foolish and severely misguided. The current crop of Dem president hopefuls have never seen a gun control bill they didn't like except maybe bill Richards but I would bet the farm that he would vote party line in the white house. Actually all of our civil rights are under constant attack from the state, whether it be owning guns to how we spend our money or even who we talk to and about what. And this is in all under the guise of protecting our lives and providing security. One of our forefathers (Franklin) said "those who are willing to give up essential liberties for temporary security deserver neither liberty or security (or something like that, but you get the idea) .

First: its a metaphor used to say people always say things like that sorry you were not capable of the comparison...

Second: WOW, how thick can you be, all it take is somehting for him to snap and he has the weapon in his car. What if it was a hunting rifle that he forgot to take out ofhis trunk. Same situation

Third: COULD is the key... This kid COULD and had the resources to inflict harm on another student in his car. He HAD the time to go to his car if needed and get the knife if he so desired.

You probably would have yeled at the VA TECH police had they arrestd the mass murder for having a gun in his car before he murdered all those kids, i for one am glad they were proactive.

I guarantee you the kid knew he was not to have the knife on school grounds...

This shit just writes itself, doesn't it?

Because they're teenagers, who have no stake in what happens to this guy. It doesn't effect them.

So go out there and volunteer to lead the revolt I say.

I guarantee you the kid knew he was not to have the knife on school grounds...

You call that a knife?

This is a knife...

Swiss Army knives are hardly weapons compared to what someone with training can do with their own hands.
