British soldiers began withdrawing Sunday from their last base in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, paving the way for fresh troop cuts and fueling worries about the security of the country's second-largest city and the surrounding region.

Basra Palace was to house British soldiers and diplomatic staff after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion and has come under daily mortar and rocket attack in recent months.

Apparently, the Brits can take a hint.

7,000 Brit troops drawn down to 5,500 last Feb and now maybe another 500 gone after the Basra Base turnover.

The numbers the Brits are drawing down in Iraq will be going to Afghanistan mostly and that's good.

Looks like the party's winding down.

All good things, as they say, must one day come to an end.

They say that about wars too.

Be Well.

Gordon Brown's way of saying he doesn't support the US the way Blair did. Oh, and Basra will be chaos, shortly, or, it already is.

A real slow news day.
This is the second thread of this story on the front page.

they've cut and run! WTF?! God Bless America, pray for the families of 9/11, we are a great christian nation that will never submit to islam.

FF for you Audrey

They'll be back.
1914 - British Troops Enter Basra
2003 - British Troops Enter Basra

Did something happen on 9/11/01? I forgot about that.

After the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, president Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
After the 1995 bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed five U.S. military personnel, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
After the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed 19 and injured 200 U.S. military personnel, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
After the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Africa, which killed 224 and injured 5,00, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
After the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 and injured 39 U.S.sailors, Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
Maybe if Clinton had kept those promises, an estimated 3,000 people in New York and Washington, DC that are now dead would be alive today.

Except for the World Trade Center, they were all military targets that were meddling in ME affairs.

But what the heck, there is always someone to shift the blame onto. Nothing is ever Bush's fault.

Sniper, why don't you give G. Gordon Liddy---a certifiable wackjob if ever there was one---credit for writing what you posted above?

Exhibit A:

Although that drivel has been used by so many radical websites that I'm not sure who wrote it, though I'm pretty sure it wasn't you.

Just what the DR needs: another pathetic plagiarist.

By the way, broaden you education: check out the name "Ramzi Yousef" and save yourself further embarrassment.

"After the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, president Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished."

And they were in that case.

Probably don't remember "wag the dog", either.

Where's Osama?

Where's Osama?

He's hiding with his stash of WMD that were ensconced from Iraq.

Sandy Berger and Bill Clinton were far more cognisant of and proactive in their dealings with Osama and al Qaeda, because of the events you refer to. Not to say their efforts were perfect, but they did make more intelligent decisions within a bureaucracy of many contrarian agendas. Have you forgotten that the 1993 bombers were successfully convicted?

Contrast that with Rice/Bush/Cheney(Rummy) who were obsessed with making energy and defense industry more profitable. They have savaged mine safety rules and enforcement. They wanted and are still proceeding with breaking the anti-ballistic missile treaty, while losing focus on binLaden. To fight terrorism, it is important to develop a morally defensible position towards friends and enemies that in the long run builds admiration and popular support throughout the world. They have accomplished the opposite with remarkable speed, for the sake of domestic consumption by feeble minded Evangelicals and Rednecks.

The BushCo Chickenhawks have abused our military personell, accelerated outsourcing, squandered the next generations future with waste and labor arbitrage, compromised our moral standing in the world and lost two wars by engaging in one unnecessarily for reasons which change weekly.

Well, at least we saw Saddam swinging from a rope.

Where's Osama?

Well, he's not publicly addressing his troops in Iraq, or anywhere else for that matter.

He's likely dead. Do you have proof to the contrary?

"likely dead"

Yeah, sure, you have the pulse of all Paki intel, we know. And we know damn good and well ol' Dr Al is still with us.

Do you have proof to the contrary?

Do you have any proof to sustain your view, other than the absence of evdidence?

Setting the stage for another disasterous pullout by the US. As long as Shrub can hold off until the Democrats take over, the Republicans can then blame them for the inevitable, ensuing disater. Its already their story line for Vietnam, even though it was predominantly a Democrat effort.

or maybe its going to work..
and there is NOT a complete pullout. there are still a lot of british soldiers there for more training of the iraqis who are now in charge.
so lets see what happens and just maybe it will be a sign of things to come IF dems win and they sign on for our defeat or if we can pull out SOME troops like the brits have.....AS IN NOT ALL OF THE BRITISH TROOPS HAVE LEFT as the left wants us to think that the base is empy barracks with iraqi tumbleweeds blowing down the streets and allys.....

If it works, what then? we were right all the time about getting the iraqis ready to hold thier own security

if it doesnt work because they left too soon.....then we were also right......

Got your bets covered huh BLT?

I think the Brits have had it. They certainly don't want to be on the firing line when Bush bombs Iran. I think it's going to happen, and the Shiite militias in the south will cut the supply lines from Kuwait. That's when the fun starts.

In any case they're going to need a Bugle Boy, so pucker up BLT and start blowing your horn.

If the very best BL2 and Bush can offer. This after 4 years.

There is no if needed, Pathetic works quiet well.

"Gordon Brown's way of saying he doesn't support the US the way Blair did. Oh, and Basra will be chaos, shortly, or, it already is.

Posted by sitdown"

The latter. Basra decended into chaos late last year, with Shia factions killing each other for control of government minstries.

or maybe its going to work..

Then why aren't we leaving, BLT?
The Brits are down to 5000 from 17,000, huddled at an Iraqi airbase.
We're up to 160,000 with our Commander-in-Chief huddled at an Iraqi airbase.
My only question is, since the Brit commanders have stated they knew from before the get-go that Bush/Rummy were too stupid to win this war, did they tell Bliar, and why did he still offer up another Charge of the Light Brigade? he never struck me as an especially stupid man.
