The outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is expected to advise President Bush to reduce the U.S. force in Iraq next year by almost half, potentially creating a rift with top White House officials and other military commanders.

Why does Gen. Pace hate America so much????

Good for Gen. Pace... but those pointy little ears in the WH don't hear stuff like that.

Shrub would have to concede defeat. No oil sharing agreement. Lotsa unnecessary death and mayhem.

Rove/Shrub intend to blame the Democrats for their own wasteful, inhumane, fuckup. The plan is to hang in there until the end of his term, forcing a Democrat to withdraw. All the ensuing death and destruction is just collateral damage for the sake of a Republican storyline.

The current official excuse is concern for the consequences of withdrawal. This will happen sooner or later regardless of what plan the moron comes up with. The only remaining questions are how many have to die under our watch first and whether it will happen on Bush's watch or the next President's. Bush will gladly sacrifice more Americans and Irawis to avoid being there when the shit hits the fan. Nor does he care if we are all bankrupted in the process. For one thing, he's turned Bankruptcy Law on end. One of my tenants attempted to declare Bankruptcy 5 times in 5 years, only to be rebuffed by Courts for the rich.

LET HISTORY AND CHINESE COMPOUNDED DAILY INTEREST BE THE JUDGE.

I saw Peter Pace years ago when he was a one-star. Energetic, determined and squared away. Today he looks harried, frustrated and on the verge of becoming a subversive force for truth, honor and the "anti-neoconservative way". (He'd better watch out or the Cheneyites in DC will have him tried for treason!)

Solution to an enigmatic problem -- call in the DOD and DIA and CIA experts who were on the money early on, the smart dissenters who were early on accused of defeatism when their analysis showed no Iraq link to 9/11 or Al Qaida, or who showed no clear value to unseating a strongman in a country that was secular and generally opposed to the islamist extremists.

Again, if anyone is listening -- COngress needs to assemble a blue-ribbon panel comprised of at elast the following experts to hear what they see as the risks and opportunities presented by the situation in the Middle East and War on Terror: Generals Van Riper, USMC (former National War College President); Batiste, USA (82nd AB); Swannack, USA (101 AB); Zinni, USMC (PG1 vet); Shinseki, USA (Army COS, who was ridiculed by DOD neocons for challenging the neocon assumprions about Iraq), Richard Clarke, ex-CIA (AQ/UBL expert).

There are probably a dozen others who should be included in this panel. BUT ASK THEM TO EXPLAIN TO CONGRESS THE RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES TAHT CONFRONT US. These folks know so much, and because they haven't imbibed the neocon kool-aid, they can probably be trusted to give a pretty good counterpoint to the PNAC/American Enterprise Institute shills who are embraced by the Vice Presidential Branch of the government.

Correcting portions of the previous post:

The Commanders on the GROUND disagree with butt in the D.C. Pentagon chair Gen. Pace.

WASHINGTON -- America's top military brass appeared at odds Friday over the course of the Iraq War as outgoing Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Peter Pace reportedly stood ready to recommend a major reduction next year in troop strength while a key ground commander warned that such a move would be "a giant step backwards." Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch , who commands the central sector of Iraq, told reporters Friday via video link at the Pentagon that such a drawdown would cause the military to lose all the gains it has made since the beginning of the buildup earlier this year. "In my battlespace right now, if soldiers were to leave, coalition soldiers were to leave -- having fought for that terrain, having denied the enemy of their sanctuaries, what will happen is the enemy would come back," Lynch said.

what will happen is the enemy would come back," Lynch said.

So what about the stander-upper Iraqis we've been hearing so much about from the Bushies for the last 4 years? Where have all the sunni tribal chiefs who were falling in love with Uncle Sam wandered off to?

This is a no brainer.
We already heard last month that Patreaous was going to recommend troop cutbacks by next summer and we all know why -- FALL 2008 ELECTIONS.

Correction to above post --

I'm always screwing up the spelling of his name --
it's "Patraeous" not "Patreaous"

So when does he leave to "Spend more time with his family"

chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is expected to advise President Bush. Expected by who?

UTASTAFF, those commanders on the ground you speak of are discussing what will happen in Iraq, Gen. Pace is going to be talking about our overall military preparedness not just limited to Iraq.
We absolutely cannot ignore his report or we could risk far bigger consequences than chaos in Iraq.

Hmm another General that is attempting to speak out against the so-called war...or excuse me! The battlespace...gotta luv newspeak!

Obviously he will be fired or retired soon...

Maj.

Well then I suggest that all young Republicans report to their military recruiter ASAP. Or Bush stand up and call for a draft. But they aren't going to, are they?

Troops have to rotate home, and we don't have replacements.
The surge is ending, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. There's no way to hold on to the gains of the surge, without more troops, which we don't have.

You are believing a lie when you dismiss the generals who tell you that we have to withdraw. Gen Lynch may very well be right that gains will be lost when troops draw down, but it isn't his decision to make. He can't pull army divisions out of thin air.

Where is your great leader? Where is Bush calling for a draft so that these hard fought gains aren't surrendered to the enemy?

""Troops have to rotate home, and we don't have replacements.""

We can just extend their tours and send em back again and it's ok cuz they volunteered. Don't worry young Republicans we know you have "other priorities."
