Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

A liberal blogger has filed a federal complaint against former Sen. Fred Thompson, the actor and unannounced Republican candidate for president, accusing him of violating election laws as he ponders his entry into the race. The blogger, Lane Hudson, submitted his complaint to the Federal Election Commission on Monday saying Thompson has raised far more money than he needs to explore whether to run for president.

I just wanted to take a stab at a Bowa-like headline.

But actually, this is an interesting question. How much $$ does it really take to "explore". I'd like to see a comparison with what the exploratory committees of other candidates (both parties) raised.

Oh, I see. He's spending the money on Gucci shoes:

On Sunday, however, Fox News hosts were laughing about Thompson's appearing at the Iowa Fair in Gucci loafers. Fox's Ellen Ratner said, "It's kind of like when Howard Dean's wife came and looked like crunchy granola. You don't go to Iowa, or any place else in the country, unless you're going to Rodeo Drive in Hollywood, and wear Gucci shoes. It's just not a smart idea."

The Gucci loafer incident has already given rise to a tempest in the blogs. Ryan Sager, blogging at the New York Sun, has discovered that when Thompson ran for the Senate in 1994, his opponent described him as a "Gucci-wearing, Lincoln-driving, Perrier-drinking, Grey Poupon-spreading millionaire Washington special-interest lobbyist."

washingtonblade.com

Hudson, an activist who gained attention for posting Internet communications between disgraced former Rep. Mark Foley and a congressional page, said Thompson "has been ignoring the letter and the spirit of the federal election law for his own political benefit."

Mr. Hudson, what happened to you at HRC?

That's nice Petrous. I know its really, really hard not to react to everything by attacking the messenger, but how does that relate to the legitimate question at hand.

The liberal whackjob blogger should have more respect for Fred Thompson, the next President of the United States.

Why question his spending with such little money raised? Look how much money Hillary and Obama are raising and spending. Money is like water to those guys. Thompson will declare next month and that will be end of any hope for a Democrat president in the '08 elections.

"Why question his spending with such little money raised? Look how much money Hillary and Obama are raising and spending."

You are utterly clueless, as usual. You see, Hillary and Obama are declared candidates and they can raise as much money as they want to, within FEC guidelines.

Thompson is not a declared candidate and therefore subject to different rules, hence:

"The law prohibits anyone who is "testing the waters" from hoarding the money for use during his actual campaign."

You didn't get many gold stars in reading comprehension, did you?

"I just wanted to take a stab at a Bowa-like headline."

But then, of course, Rcade changed it.

Oh, I see. He's spending the money on Gucci shoes:

And no doubt eating arugala morning, noon, and night

LOL

Thompson will declare next month and that will be end of any hope for a Democrat president in the '08 elections.

Oh you are so RIGHT ! The dems will all fold their tents when he announces !

"I just wanted to take a stab at a Bowa-like headline."

My headlines have now become legendary on drudge.com

I like it.

Ron Paul wins NH straw poll
Just like Alabama poll, he won it in a landslide with a huge lead over Romney who took 2nd

"My headlines have now become legendary on drudge.com"

Delusional would be a better description...and to a lesser degree, infamous.

Romney, Thomson, and the other republicans are straw man candidates. Hillary already has the blessing of Ruppert Murdock, the Rockerfellers, the CFR, and the military industrial complex, to carry foreward their globalization agenda.
Ron Paul is the only republican that has a chance of beating Hillary.

Bowa is a legend in his own mind.

Bowa is a legend in his own mind.

Agreed.

Luckily he's not claustrophobic.

Be Well.

funny flag for spud

if there is any water to this claim thompson is done

I wish Sam Waterston would run instead of Fred.

The Denmark Jeff advises us of Ron Paul's trouncing victory in NH's straw poll.

I, for one, am not terribly surprised. NH has leaned libertarian for a good long while now. Hmm... well, the property taxes are higher than I'd like (I've done some research, they're about as high as PA's from what I've seen), and rents are a bit higher than I'd like (for apartments)... but with no state or local level income tax, no sales tax... no requirements on seatbelts, motorcycle helmets, auto insurance...

Yes, I pretty much look at it (and damn near everything these days) through economic-shaded spectacles. I might consider joining the Free State Project after all...

Oh, sorry, back on topic here. Thompson accused of FEC violation. I'm probably going to get yelled at here, but... he's not running yet is he? How can he be violating the rules if he's not affected by them (yet)?

However, Utastaff, I very, very seriously doubt Thompson will take the POTUS job. Mind you, I don't think any of them can be trusted with it (not even Paul, but he's the one I'd be least likely to distrust at this point with the job).

Back off topic:

Rev, if you see this, expect an answer (and a cc) to your e-mail sometime in the next 24 hrs. And... holy crap, not even I remembered about the demonic sink, how the hell did you, with a head full of the ganja?!

"How can he be violating the rules if he's not affected by them (yet)?"

Let - you need to read the article. There are laws governing the fund raising and spending for exploratory committees, as well.

ie: "The law prohibits anyone who is "testing the waters" from hoarding the money for use during his actual campaign."

Thompson's committee raised 5 times as much money as it spent. Is that illegal? Don't know, but that is the point of the discussion.

Leave it to a liberal male to comment on a man's shoes...

Actually it was your beloved Faux News hosts who commented on Thompson's shoes. Oops!

Yeah um, did she log in under your name and post it here?
What's next buttercup, are you going to comment on Fred's interior designs?

Oh, I see. He's spending the money on Gucci shoes:

Is this considered a "comment" in your world? Is Sanantoniorogue a Fox News commentator?

No 101, it isn't. I simply passed along the commentary by Faux News. I merely made a statement, then presented the Faux quote for consideration of the reader.

And all of that actually goes to the crux of Thompson's supposed appeal to the "common man". The real point of that whole thing was the characterization of Thompson as a "Gucci-wearing, Lincoln-driving, Perrier-drinking, Grey Poupon-spreading millionaire Washington special-interest lobbyist."

You see, those are examples of comments of others, not my own. An example of me making a comment might be something more like:

In my opinion, the horse manure comments of 101 were not particularly missed in his recent absence.

""I wish Sam Waterston would run instead of Fred.""

It must be difficult to choose which actor you want for president. Both have played rolls that make it seem they know how a president should act.
Neither really has done anything to qualify themselves to be president of anything.

Mysteriously "oh I see, he's spending his money on Gucci shoes" isn't a comment!?! Somehow the post appeared as if by magic. There's only one comment before yours and it has nothing to do with shoes. Absolutely fucking amazing.

The fact that you were aware of my absence is flattering...
Also, do you honestly believe that an admitted "left wing kook hater" cares that he wasn't missed on a left wing kook lemming blog? You're smarter than that, or so I thought.

I'm sure Thomson appeals to the common man just as Hillary and Obama appeal to the common black person.

HAHAHAHA, he raised like 3-4 million last month. How many tens of millions has Hillary raised? But Thompson can't collect a few before deciding to run, which cost $$?

Hilarious.

I was curious how a pair of Gucci shoes would compare to Edward's famous $400 haircut. From the Gucci website, a pair of loafers runs about $540.

So Edwards spends $400 on a haircut that should have cost maybe 40-50, and Thompson spent $540 on shoes that should have cost maybe 80-100.

It'll be interesting to see if those who have been attacking Edwards now round on Thompson. I mean, Edwards overspent by $350, but Thompson overspent by $440.

As usual Former, the point whizzes completely over your head.

Let's try this again.

1. Exploratory Committees are governed by different laws than declared candidates.

2. Therefore, there is no correlation between what Hillary raises and what Thompson raises.

3. The law governing Exploratory Committees prohibits anyone who is "testing the waters" from hoarding the money for use during his actual campaign."

4. Thompson's committee raised 5 times more money than they spent.

5. This is a legitimate discussion since he has delayed and delayed his announcement, but is still raising money. How much "exploration" does it require?

6. It would be fair game to examine the records of the other candidate's Exploratory Committee fund raising and expenditures for comparison. Maybe Thompson's case is the rule rather than the exception. Maybe not. But again, comparing what Hillary or any other declared candidate is raising is not germane to the topic.

Clearer now?

It'll be interesting to see if those who have been attacking Edwards now round on Thompson. I mean, Edwards overspent by $350, but Thompson overspent by $440.

How often do you get a haircut? How long do a pair of shoes last?
Do you have any other gems?

"How long do a pair of shoes last?"

Gucci shoes won't last very long if you're stomping around the dirt and muck of a state fair. And if you get Perrier and/or Grey Poupon on them you're screwed.

Better stick to your Keds Red Ball Jets 101.

So at a minimum, at least 3 times as long as Edwards haircuts? Thanks SanAn, I knew if I was going to get good advice on shoes and haircuts for men it would come from a liberal male.

""But Thompson can't collect a few before deciding to run, which cost $$?""

Apparently not according to the law, but hey why should Thompson have to concern himself with a little detail like the law???

Let's all see if we can peck some shit with the chickens. He may have broken what you consider the spirit of the law but you ain't the judge and jury

well shit and damit to hell.

if a liberal blogger said it......how can we possibly think its not the truth, the whole truth and nothing but...

I mean we have danni and larry and even ole sarge as of late to 'show us the light'.........

Do I care if he has a Young Hot Wife, Hell No

ANY candidate for pres has to be looked at from all sides and about all concerns.......but it has to go both ways.......and if we look at obama too closely, we are rascists......and if we look at hillary we are clinton deflectors and sexists....

"But when you find out she is smarter than Hillary, you will"

How can I put this, hmmmm "No" why would I care if she was or not ? Hell I'm smarter than she is.

Wisdog responded.

But when you find out she is smarter than Hillary, you will.

Spud butts in.

Are we talking about Kucinich's wife here?

Cos she's the hot one.

During the debates whenever Dennis was talking the cameras kept cutting to her. Hell, even when the other candidates were speaking they kept on cutting to her.

The Daily Show had a bit of a laff at it all the other night.

Freds wife is only young and hot when directly compared to Fred himself. Compared to Dennis' main squeeze she looks like chopped liver.

Be Well.

"But when you find out she is smarter than Hillary, you will."

I was comparing her to former first ladies, boys.

"Hell I'm smarter than she is."

-Sarge

My nine iron is smarter than Hillary.
