Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

A small South Carolina parts supplier collected about $20.5 million over six years from the Pentagon for fraudulent shipping costs, including $998,798 for sending two 19-cent washers to an Army base in Texas.

I hope she rots in jail.

Wow. Makes those $5000 hammers look like the deal of the century.

I would suggest that they be given a blindfold and a ciggarette.

......makes Halliburton look like a charity.......

I would suggest that they be given a blindfold and a ciggarette. - per Chairborne

I agree.

$20m, how many up-armored Humvees would that have bought? How many lives could have been saved? Seems to me, that where we start factoring the cost. Dozen counts of negligent homicide?

She must have stopped sending in her campaign contributions.

The price the military paid for each item shipped rarely reached $100 and totaled just $68,000 over the six years in contrast to the $20.5 million paid for shipping, she said.

``The majority, if not all of these parts, were going to high-priority, conflict areas -- that's why they got paid,'' Stroot said. If the item was earmarked ``priority,'' destined for the military in Iraq, Afghanistan or certain other locations, ``there was no oversight.''

No oversight. You know, I'm all for smaller government, but cutting regulation and oversight just isn't an option. Capitalism isn't a charitable system. Companies don't stay in business by being nice guys. If you think you can just expect contractors to work on the honor system, you're sadly mistaken.
When you cut oversight, all you get is fraud and waste. You don't save any money.

But I'm also a big fan of the 'scared straight' approach. This woman should be charged with war profiteering and treason and hung, preferably in Al-Iburton's front yard.
It might give all the other traitors pause as they plan their frauds.

Another example of the truely efficient and accountable government we've created. We pay bills to contractors automatically with no review and then we're shocked when someone bilks the system.

If the government doesn't have time to check a few shipping records before cutting a million dollar check then it's obviously grown too big for it's britches.

War profiteering to the Nth degree. They should rot.

Hey, anyone found the 8 billion missing in Iraq yet???
Just wondering.

$8,000,000,000?
It's not missing.
Some Swiss banker knows exactly where it is.

You think this is the only company that figured out the exploitable flaw in the system? They're just the beginning.

so someone just assumes that the sisters were republicans with the no contributions crack...

a beaurocracy is not always republican or democrat.
it feeds on itself as much as the 'blob' or the plant from 'little house of horrors'.........
and its one thing like immigration......we should all join together and demand this stop, but is that really doable with a large government like ours...

All six in the black, blindman. Nice grouping.

I imagine this shit is widespread but I doubt our government cares all that much.

Here's a fun read:

"In her book Imaginary Weapons, Sharon Weinberger reminds us that vast amounts of the taxpayers money (about $50,000 per second) are spent on the technology of war."

www.imaginaryweapons.net

its not that they actually spent a million dollars transporting two washers

you see with the pentegaon, (and mabye all government agencies) its a big no-no for them to say "hey we actually do not know what happened to that 1 million dollars". They have to be able to account for every dime in their budget. So when a few billion dollars seems to have gone up in smoke, they come up with creative ways to account for it.
thats why you have 1,000,000 dollar washers and 50,000 dollar hammers and so on.

for everyone one of these stories of waste that are brought to light, how many go undetected?

the thought makes me ill...

1 to 1000
1 to 10000
1 to 10000000000000000

"we should all join together and demand this stop"

YEAH!

Duh!

That's what we (the 70%'s) are trying to do ----- put an end to this Bushed "governance"!

Unfortunately, we are still stuck with the 30% "bushlovers" like you!

No, $50,000 hammers are becuase of Cost-Plus accounting practices.

She should rot in jail but hey, she doesn't bear ALL the responsibility in this mess, either. Where is the OVERSIGHT by the Pentagon here? Good grief! Whoever the auditor is who finally caught this scam (probably through the involved procedure of actually DOING HIS JOB) should be given a Medal of Freedom! And time for the Pentagon to find out just who is running the store there! OR giving it away, as the case may be.

YEAH!

Red you astound me. You think democrats will shrink this bloated beast of a government? Have another swill of the kool-aid pal.

NETHER how much oversight did the Republicans do when they controlled Congress???
None.

red.......and of course you are still stuck in the idea that this is a republican made scandal......and so how is that possible with the aforementioned hammer for 5 grand
and how much were those toilet seats at one time....about 10k or so.......hhhhhhmmmmmm if I remember correctly the president at that time was getting his hummer hooted in the oval office...maybe he should have kept his 'head' on defense spending instead of where his little head was............

and this bearuocracy responsible for this nonsene.....is it like other departments and filled with people of all sides ENTRENCHED in thier jobs with civil service immunity? I think we could start somewhere like that? dont you think.......

hey danni,.......since you are here.....
how about that hero of yours...chavez.....now he is making sure that he can be immiedately relected for 7 years......and then of course he will say.....hey amigos......whats another 7 years in the life of a socialist despot?

but of course there wont be any bad press about it.

your hero already took care of that............

I bet this wont happen in the his defense department....

Clinton Deflection(TM)

Hammer -
$436 (honestly, check the facts - I mean it was part of "VooDoo economics")

Two $0.19 cent washers shipped?
$1,000,000.

A Republican Congress and Administration?
Priceless.

Who busted the $500 hammer? Take a look and see. Especially if you're a Republican:

govinfo.library.unt.edu

How many hammer (not hummer) awards have been given out under Bush?

news.com.com

Yeah BLT, since we don't like what he's doing why don't we do another "regime change." Hey why shouldn't our government help coup plotters overthrow democratically elected governments???
Right???
We ought to just go destroy their country cuz they voted for the wrong guy.
We'll bring em some demokrucy.

Military contractors are all A_Holes... Making money off of war... FOR SHAME!!!

Catch you guys later, I'm going to watch Superbad...

BL2,

You brought up Chavez, and what you need to understand is that we created Chavez. In fact, it is unethical capitalism that has created, through it's own hubris, most of the "Big socialist government" programs you hate.

It was companies offering horrible working conditions and slave wages which brought about unions and minimum wages.

It was companies not offering retirement benefits that brought about Social Security.

It was companies not offering health care which brought about medicare and continues to push towards national socialist health care.

It was corporate greed that brought about oversight and federal regulations.

And it was companies taking Venezuela resources while not enriching the peasants that created Chavez.
Socialist dictators thrive under conditions of extreme poverty. Maybe the oil companies should have thought about that.

And if corporations continue their outsourcing push, and continue fucking over the middle class, we'll have socialism in this country too.

thats right and you were honored to witness the best of them........me..........hee hee

danni.........I stopped reading your post when I noticed the insulting spelling.....it does nothing to move your point to show us your bigoted attitude towards any group of people.....if you could rewrite it in a less insulting tone, maybe I will give it another shot...otherwise.....no thanks....

and norm gives us another liberal insight.....

chavez does all of the things we have talked about in this time and its our fault.........

you guys are too easy sometimes........

and oh yeah.......my first favorite is clinton deflections.......2nd favorite is putting a mirror in front of chavez to danni.........

Corley, 46, was fined $750,000. She faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years on each count and will be sentenced soon, McDonald said in a telephone interview from Columbia. Stroot said her sibling died last year

Where is the rest of the fu.king money? $750,000 fine on a $20M heist? She should have an indefinite jail term until every dime is paid back. After that, the clock would start on her sentence.

While we're on the topic of the government pissing away tax dollars for stupid reasons-

A couple arrested at a rally after refusing to cover T-shirts that bore anti-President Bush slogans settled their lawsuit against the federal government for $80,000, the American Civil Liberties Union announced Thursday.

Keeping Reality away from the Prezdent is apparently no longer priceless.

Hey BLT, since you're all bent out of shape about Chavez, let us know when there are elections for the King of saudistan and the Emir of Kuwait, two countries we've died for. Or are you only concerned with democracy when it's good for the Bushies?

Where is the rest of the fu.king money? $750,000 fine on a $20M heist? She should have an indefinite jail term until every dime is paid back. After that, the clock would start on her sentence.

I believe they confiscated all of her assets purchased with her ill gotten gains. They'll be sold at auction.

Personally, i support the "scared straight" suggestion above. Press charges for treason and hang her if guilty.

When it feels so good, the crooks can't stop themselves from doing it again. But sooner or later, by some unlikely event, it catches up with you.

I believe they confiscated all of her assets purchased with her ill gotten gains. They'll be sold at auction.

That's a good strategy but quite often in scams like these, assets are cleverly hidden. If the sale of her assets don't cover what was stolen, the government should offer a bounty for the recovery of any of her hidden assets. A 25% bounty of what ever is recovered should do it. The idea is that once she leaves jail, she should have made complete restitution to the American people or she should be penniless. Under no circumstances should she be able to get out of jail and live on the proceeds of what she has stolen.

""Press charges for treason and hang her if guilty.""

Can't do that because Cheney and his buddies might someday face the same thing. Only, with the amounts they stole they probably would have to be hung multiple times.

Corley, 46, was fined $750,000. She faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years on each count and will be sentenced soon, McDonald said in a telephone interview from Columbia. Stroot said her sibling died last year.

Dig the bitch up and display her in the Pentagon. make every one of the Penatgon staff who handled these bills spend a night with the corpse. And two for the numbnuts that decided anything marked "Priority" gets paid automatically.

Article says a lot was blown on vacations. Can they sue the dead one's heirs?

BLT:and how much were those toilet seats at one time....about 10k or so.......hhhhhhmmmmmm if I remember correctly the president at that time was getting his hummer hooted in the oval office

I think the toilet seats pre-date Clinton, unless you're referring to Carter or Reagan getting a hummer (would he have even noticed?). But nice try at a Clinton Deflection.

Try this:

Hire a taxi to take the parts by hand delivery.

Pay the tab,

Pay one years salary,

Buy him a new cab,

Two weeks vacation.

Total costs: About $100,000 tops

Even the pentagon should have caught this none sense

YEAH!

Except I never said, claimed or even alluded to that!

However one thing is for sure! That "Contract with America" was never honored and the last six years of "republicans" calling the shots have put us in this position!

With that fact on the table and on full display to anyone who believes their "lying" eyes ------- suddenly believing the "republicans" are magically going to change their ways must surly be "kool-aid" induced!

I personally care less about how "democrats" are going to operate in regards to this republican created "bloated beast" as you call it and am more concerned about making the lying, contract reneging, busllshit Fake Plastic Sons of Bitchs pay and bleed for their piss-poor record and governance and blatant disregard for the truth!

If the "democrats" do nothing but put a boot to the neck of these pieces of shit I will be very happy (why I voted for them last November)!

Come on you guys... the dang things were made of metal. It's expensive to ship metal. the had to be protected under armed guard. It was part of the body armor all the libs were bitching about.

Love how idiots from both sides are trying to make this a partisan issue.

Ever hear of Weber's Theory of Bureaucracy and Mandels corresponding discussion of the Marxist basis for Bureaucratic Waste?

Generally, as an organization grows exponentially, bureaucracy is inevitable. As a bureaucracy gets larger, problems like this will continue to grow. The larger the beast, the worse the problem. Solutions are difficult to come by, because power is cemented into people with lifetime tenure at their highest position.

Bureaucrats, by their nature, have to be non-partisan to survive in their position, so assigning blame to one party or the other for any bureaucratic screw up shows a basic misunderstanding for the system.

But the parade of inanity is fun to watch, nonetheless.

Fair enough but don't hold your breath. Politicians are cut from the same cloth. The only thing this government knows how to do is get bigger and bigger and spend more and more of our money. Either it goes to people who don't work or it goes to defense. In both cases they take it out of my pocket and I never get it back. Until either of the parties decides they want a less bloated and tax devouring government, I wouldn't expect alot of neck booting.

The government has to grow to keep America employed at a level of liveability.

Private sector is not into allowing wages for their workers to live. They could careless and if the government will do it for them, the better.

Not all of the story is in this article.
The dead sister actually commited suicide back around October when she found out about the investigation. She left her twin sister to take the rap alone. Another interesting point is that the company warehouse burned down right after the suicide.

But the parade of inanity is fun to watch, nonetheless.
Sort of like reading the transcript of a Bush speech, ain't it?

Of course we see the usual knee jerk bashing. These were two criminal women who broke the law. Is Bush responsible that these bimbos ended up to be criminals? He was a young boy when they were born, so I think it's to safe that he is not responsible for whatever forces turned them to a life of crime.

The good news is that they were caught. Was I the only one who was able to see a good point in this story? A criminal was caught!

I can't believe the people calling for the woman to be hung or serve life in prison for this. Does anyone who steals $1,000,000 - from anybody - get that kind of punishment? No. So why should she be treated differently for stealing from the government?

Frankly I think she should be made to pay the money back and walk. While her motives were certainly dishonest, I applaud the fact that our government has once again been proven to be an embarrassment. Apparently you lose some things along the way as your government expands at an unfathomable rate.

`"`C&D was a rogue contractor,'' Stroot said. While other questionable billing has been uncovered, nothing came close to C&D's, she said. The next-highest billing for questionable costs totaled $2 million, she said."

...........

"As the international furor grew(over abu ghraib), senior military officers, and President Bush, insisted that the actions of a few did not reflect the conduct of the military as a whole. "

www.newyorker.com

hmmmm I am sure they are right.....lol

so lets see here....

These 3 washers cost 19 cents and the 3(machined) screws cost 1.31 and another washer cost 89 cents...btw ALL screws are "machined" ...

I guess these items could be of a particularly exotic material or have some specific strength or other design requirements ...but the unit prices do not suggest thats the case.....

I guess its to risky to send some to the local ACE or home depot....and if it needs to be shipped over seas give it to a pilot heading in that direction....if he loses it .... put him on report and give some other pilot a chance to burnish his creditials...... lol

"Corley, 46, was fined $750,000. She faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years on each count and will be sentenced soon, McDonald said in a telephone interview from Columbia. Stroot said her sibling died last year."

I wonder if the death was slow and painful .....that would partially restore my faith in the karmic justice system....If the living sister gets 20yrs on each count maybe we can say justice is being served in this case at least....

Then we can move on to the executives at halliburton and kbr....

The price the military paid for each item shipped rarely reached $100 and totaled just $68,000 over the six years in contrast to the $20.5 million paid for shipping, she said.

Twin sisters did this. Spent the money they essentially stole from the military on lavish vacations, extra homes, luxury automobiles, expensive jewelry and the like.

Anyone wanna bet if them automobiles had Vote Bush Bumperstickers on 'em?

made to pay the money back and walk?

Seriously, Joe?

Fraud is bad enuff but this is war profiteering.

Just cos Helliburton and the like have been getting away with it fer a while now doesn't mean we can afford to get all blase on the topic.

This is some serious shit.

Be Well.

Btw.... when govt contractors bilk...overcharge or otherwise defraud the millitary.... that money is NOT supporting the troops.... these women STOLE enough money to supply the troops with over 9000 helmet liners....just an example..

www.operation-helmet.org

think about how many mrap's the $$9 billion 'misplaced' in Iraq would have bought..

If the sisters were so damn smart, why didn't they move their headquarters to Bahrain?

New meaning to "absolutely, positively, overnight" = "absolutely, positively, screwed!"
