Why the f**k does just about every country that gets rich based on its resources decide they need to buy more friggin' weapons? Russia us still bassackwards compared to the west, with real problems,and no one is about to invade them any time soon,so maybe they should think about fixing up their shithole country and putting a few rubles aside for a rainy day.

Russia is not only building up its military but it has scheduled the holding of joint military exercises with China. Not good.

Our cowboy diplomacy, muscular foreign policy and willingness to use our weapons for regime change have frightened a great many leaders. It is driven some countries closer to us. It is driven others away. Those that it is driven away think that they have the means to resist us or will soon have those means. I am convinced that one of the reasons (maybe the primary reason) for taking over Iraq is that Iraq was getting to close to Russia and France, thereby preventing the US from having access to its oil.

It is taken awhile, but it seems as if we are finally coming to realize that we should stop making people that despise us rich by buying their oil. In fact energy security is indistingushable from national security. As we become more energy self sufficient, the less tension there will be in the world.

With all of the coal that we have and all of the science/technology that we possess, there should be an effort to convert that coal into clean energy that rivals the effort to create the atom bomb or land a man on the moon.

The F-16 is the most used plane with foreign airforces. The new F-16s are far ahead of the old F-16s.

The "Thunder" is better than the old original F-16. But it is only 80% as good as the new F-16.

The point however, is that Russia is spreading it's manure everywhere. This plane would not have been possible without a Russian designed engine.

Anyway, I fly jets for the AF, so I probably know a little more than your average bear. The new Chinese jet really is sweet, and compared to the $320 price tag on the F-22, the $54 J-10 Chengdu is far more affordable. In many ways, both China and the FSU have much better defense plans, although you wouldn't necassarily know it unless you had some connection. While the US continues to rely on incredibly expensive stealth technology, the FSU is simply upgrading their SAM systems to be more capable. In short, they are creating million dollar systems that can counter billion dollar systems. Sure, the US might be able to find someway to defeat that system using stealth, but how much is it going to cost? The B-2 cost us $2.2 billion per article, are we going to see that cost balloon to $4.4 billion, or higher? Based on the difference between 4th and 5th generation fighters, the difference will be a about 640%. Does that mean the B-3 will cost the taxpayers $14.1 billion per article? It just might.

There are cheaper, more realistic alternatives, and we need to pursue those. I don't think even the US can afford for costs to get much higher, especially when our adversaries are keeping costs so low.

So to make the pilots feel better General Dynamics put fake rivets on the wings.
They called them "chicken rivets."

It's the old game, a numbers game:

- Superiority using large forces but lower, cheaper tech to overwhelm, but take higher losses.

Or

- Superiority with small forces using advanced, high-cost tech to destroy a much higher proportion of enemy forces.

So is it better to design, develop, and deploy a single aircraft that is capable of taking out enemy forces at a 100 to 1 ratio, but at 10 times the cost?

Or

Deploy 100 aircraft that are the equal to the enemy's assets and hope for better than a 1 to 1 kill ratio through better pilot training. Still, you stand to lose 100 pilots and aircraft as opposed to one pilot and one aircraft.

IMHO, the B-2, though an interesting exercise in tech development, was, and still is, a colossal waste of taxpayer dollars.

The F-22 Raptor though show great promise and once fully deployed will easily have a much higher kill ratio than its opponents. For now. Until one of the other countries come yup with something better, which is inevitable.

Though what is being done now with unmanned combat aircraft development, such as the X-47B UCAV, well, suffice it to say that the concept of air combat and air superiority will change dramatically.

The achilles hill of the American war machine is satellite technology. When China indicated that it could knock out a satellite, I am sure that the US military brass was shi..ing bricks.

If the US were ever engaged in a conflict and it appeared as if the enemy were going to destroy military satellites thereby blinding the US military machine, it is quite likely that the US would launch everything in its arsenal at that enemy rather than fight a war while "blind".

Russia is today's "sick man of Europe". With Muslim surging populations on all their flanks, with their own population falling by half every thirty years, with their leading export being beautiful women to Western men--the fact that they might or might not be building decent airplanes obscures the fact that in a few years there will be nobody left to fly them.
