I'd only ever heard this name in passing... And while I realize what amounts to an obituary will always highlight the good in folk, and rarely the bad, She seemed like a marvelous woman and the country will be worse for her passing.

Involved philanthopy like hers is something well worth acknowledging and celebrating.

Rest In Peace Brooke Astor.

Sounds like someone that DanniDrivel(TM) HOPES dies with pain. Brooke Astor was a Republican of privilege. Right Danni?

Hey Nutsack,
I never heard Danni rejoice about anyone's death. That particular character trait is part of your conservative ideology, jackass.

When I said Danni wouldn't rejoice about anyone's death I was referring to human beings. I read the other thread and I see that she would rejoice about Karl Rove's death. I used to think she was really cool but I might be falling in love now.

We need more Brooke Astors in this world - people who understand that money and power are responsibilities, not carte blanche to mistreat others and indulge in obscene displays of conspicuous consumption. Mrs. Astor was no fan of poverty for herself - she wore her full share of sable coats - but she also worked damned hard to make sure that others who weren't so fortunate got some real help. It seems to me that her retreat into age-related dementia occurred just about the time that "I got mine, fuck you" became the motto of America's latest crop of asshole CEO's. I wonder if that was a coincidence? Could it have been that someone who knew what money was for just couldn't take being part of a world where values had gotten so screwed up any more?

Too bad her family treated her like dirt in her old age. I never saw Mrs. Astor as being all that amazing though..... gave away money she never earned..... partied with the wealthy.... yeah she got a lot of people to donate.... I never saw her really in the streets living with the people. Not blaming her. I probably would have lived the same if I was given her fortune. She was no Mother Teresa. More like an old-school Oprah without a TV show and Cult following.

And much less of a phoney than Mother Theresa, who prayed for more poor and homeless babies.

I see that she would rejoice about Karl Rove's death. I used to think she was really cool but I might be falling in love now.

I see no reason whatsoever for someone to take a vow of poverty and give away all their earthly possessions in order to be considered "amazing".

She went above and beyond to help better her communnity.

Thats something we could all do, even without 200 million dollars.

And much less of a phoney than Mother Theresa, who prayed for more poor and homeless babies.

Asshole of the day awarded to you.

You have no idea of the work and sacrifice Mother Teresa put in looking after the people socity viewed as dispensible.

Asshole of the day awarded to you.

Oh yeah?

I have no idea who this old lady was or what she did, but I'm sure happy she's dead.

Vermon calling someone a creep...
Hahahahahaha! Hahahahaha! ROTFL......

Brooke Astor sounded like a pretty decent person. But some of her other family members sound like a bunch of greedy rich scumbags.

A Blue-Blood Battle Royale
Brooke Astor had always been a paragon of dignity--until her relatives began squabbling over her care.

Right- all those prizes and photo-ops really took it out of her.
