Republican Mitt Romney won the first test of the 2008 White House race on Saturday, receiving 31 percent of the votes cast in the nonbinding mock election, a traditional early gauge of support in the state that holds the first nominating contest leading up to the November 2008 election. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee finished second with 18 percent of the 14,302 votes cast.

From what I read, Ron Pual got 9%. Not bad an anti-establishment candidate like him.

Congratulations. He considered this as a somewhat do or die situation and invested the most (dollars) into it.

Though I disagree doctrinally in matters of faith, I am aware that America is not looking for a pastor to be President. Hence, Evangelicals ought to give Romney a good consideration.

Don't interpret this as endorsement.

Just give him a good consideration.

A vote for which you have to pay $35 to cast a vote is a bullshit vote. Which is why it's so fitting a mutt like Romney "won" the vote.

I heard Romney was busing everyone in to vote. He probably paid all the Democrats $50 plus free food and drinks and a bus ride to go in and vote for him because anyone from any party could vote.

Is this how Romeny got 30% of the measly 14,302 votes cast:

The results were delayed more than an hour after officials had to recount about 1,500 ballots on one malfunctioning machine, a party spokeswoman said....

They're even rigging up straw poll elections?! This is insane!

A vote for which you have to pay $35 to cast a vote is a bullshit vote.

of course.

Which is why Rudy and McCain dropped out of it.

I'm glad that Huckabee did so well though -- he is a very likeable candidate, and my #2 choice after Rudy for the GOP nod.

He might make an interesting choice for VP.

Which is why Rudy and McCain dropped out of it.

Oh, please. They're both political whores. They dropped out because they didnt' have their shit together for Iowa. If they had, they'd be trumpeting this Potemkin Village's "importance." Can't you ever stop shilling?

I think a pint of cheap whiskey and two packs of smokes is expected by Dem voters. How else do you think they've held Wisconsin (Milwaukee) and Michigan (Detroit) for all these years?

I'm just thankful that even the homeless can 'have their voices heard'

I used to look forward to the Iowa straw poll but Romney has reduced it to a meaningless carnival shell game.

That seems to be the marching orders of GOP goosesteppers like Romney, doesn't it?

What do You expect out of the Right Wingers of today. They USED to be a Principled bunch. Now it's all about lies and spin control. I liken it to the way Kids are today. Yesteryear they used to be top notch folks but not today. True there are some kids today who hold a moral ethical personal self awareness but Not so much today, It's all a show anyways.

Funny thing about Romney . . .

Every time I see him on television my mind pictures him wearing a 30's era SS uniform.

There's definitely something quirky about him.

chris.....I thought you were a little more on the ball than this..........

they all do this in this sort of silly little vote.

and huckaby played guitar at one site and there was all sorts of 'walking on hands' for the voters.....

I dont think this means much but its talked about so much because its the first vote of any sort.
sounds like just an excuse to get together and party..

and I read that all of the money collected goes to the Iowa republican party, not the candidates.....

and without the others, it doesnt mean much

(its a clowns' mouth)

just heard a wierd moment on fox news sunday....

wallace is talking to reporters about iowa.......he talked about clinton showing cleavage and a reporter said......." I dont want to touch that" and they all sort of stopped for a second and all seemed uncomfortable..........

I get it.........

also.....just heard on meet the press.

that for first time an iowa ID was required....
and is that interesting in this question..... is there going to be an ID required in the primary and general election??.....
also heard there that they ALL GOT BUSES and brought people in..

EXCEPT for huckaby who came in 2nd.......does that make his 2nd more important than mitt's first?
or does it matter anymore????????

I'm sorry but the Iowa Straw Pole is a joke.
The most likely candidates to win the nomination, Giuliani and Thompson didn't even attend.
And no BLT, once again this morning, you are wrong. They did not all get buses, I read this morning that specifically Mike Huckabee did not rent buses.

"Mr. Huckabee greeted the result by noting that Mr. Romney had considerably outspent him. Mr. Huckabee said he had bought tickets for 1,800 supporters -- he drew 2,587 votes -- and that he had been unable to lease buses."

Romney bought 10,000 tickets with his own money, of which he only managed to get 4500 votes.

On the other hand Huckabee, as noted before bought 1800 tickets and drew 2500+ votes.

Ron Paul bought only 800 tickets (the minimum required) and managed to draw 1300+.

Neither Huckabee nor Paul really campaigned that much in Iowa, especially Paul. He's been there for a week tops, and has spent minimal cash. 9% wasn't a terribly strong finish for him, but it's a huge jump for someone who's been polling 2-3% in other polls. People can't really say he has no real support anymore.

Brownback blew all his cash on a 3rd place finish. I hope it's good enough for him, because he's going to be strappped for cash now.

The real surprise here is Tancredo, I'm surprised he managed a 4th place finish, the dude is a nutcase. Nuke Mecca?

This isn't a "victory" at all for Romney really, everyone knew he was going to win, and win by a large margin simply because he poured so much money into this one straw poll. He's poured millions into this campaign in Iowa.

If it was a victory for anyone, it was a victory for Huckabee. I don't support him, but let's face it, this was a strong showing for him. He's the top dog of the "2nd tier" now.

"Romney bought 10,000 tickets with his own money, of which he only managed to get 4500 votes.

On the other hand Huckabee, as noted before bought 1800 tickets and drew 2500+ votes.

Interesting

Romney: 4500/10000 = 45%
Huckabee: 2500/1800 = 139%
Paul: 1300/800 = 161%

We divide, you decide.

Enfilade
I see a rational strategy behind Romney. Assuming he has the money, a good showing in the early polls has been known to jump start the campaign of an unknown.

This is true Ray, I'm not saying he won't get a bump from this. But it's not as much of a "victory" as everyone thinks.

Also, let's face it, he didn't have his main competition there, Giuliani and McCain (Thompson too I guess).

Candidates like Paul, Huckabee, Tancredo, etc. would all likely keep a good portion of their vote. Paul has the antiwar and libertarian Republicans, Huckabee has the religious right, Tancredo has the immigration hawks.

Mitt is drawing from the same "neocon" pool as the other frontrunners, and with the others there i think his support would've taken a big hit.

Enfilade
For all practical purposes, McCain is out of the race. I suspect Guiliani decided he wouldn't do well in Iowa so he stayed out.
Very few look at Romney's victory in any depth. All they know is that he came out number one.
The rest are dark horses.
Anything can happen in the next 15 months.

This is about as meaningful as the first dozen votes from Dixville Notch. Let's see where we are next year at this time. herm

You are right Herm. Does the name Howard Dean ring a bell?

I don't see this as significant.

I guess you can apologize whenever you get ready..................

and lets remember in 2003......

about this time and soon after there was a dem who had the vote all locked up......

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHEE
EEEEEEEEEEEE

howard dean......

Spending six Million dollars for 6500 votes is pretty sick! I really hope Mitt is the best candidate the Republicans can put up!

I really hope Mitt is the best candidate the Republicans can put up!

His kids like him.
Which is more than Rudy can say.
Well, more than he can say truthfully. Which is a hard thing for Rudy to do.

Yeah--the people who ridiculed Dean for his scream sure showed us. 3500 dead and still counting. The screamer looks pretty good about now.

Technically, Romney won the Iowa straw poll, but no one gives a fig about his bought-and-paid-for, pseudo-uncontested victory. Hell, if he hadn't outspent Huckabee something like 10-1, Huckabee probably would have upset him.

The real race was obviously for second place. Huckabee won that, so congrats to him as the biggest winner of the Iowa straw poll, although I would never vote for Huckabee (in many ways I think he would be a strong candidate, but he is very pro-immigration, and I favor the Tancredo position on that issue, so I can't drink the Huckabee Kool-Aid, thanx anyway). Huckabee definitely has a chance to break into the top-tier, but it'll require another strong showing in Iowa come December or January for him to achieve that. Huckabee seems a likely GOP Veep nominee.

His main contender for 2nd place was Sam Brownback, who is clearly the biggest loser of the Iowa straw poll. Brownback may as well drop out now, though he clearly lacks the sense to do so (I guess he figures if McCain can stay in the race, so can he; I think John Cox got more votes than McCain).

Tancredo and Paul are both winnners too (which pleases me, as I'm for Ron Paul, and support making Tom Tancredo Director of the INS), while Tommy Thompson and the rest are clear losers (altough the I don't think Duncan Hunter was competing, yet still did about as well as the two big name non-competitors, Benito "Skull Face" Giuliani & the guy who played the crooked lawyer from "Cape Fear," so I suppose Hunter can take some small solace from that fact). Tommy Thompson is probably at least smarter than Brownback, and will exit the race soon.

Beaming from ear to ear, Romney goes on television to "crow" about his victory.

Spent over $2 Million in a desperate effort to break into the top tier.

He knows (and so do we) that his so-called victory is about as shallow as it gets . . . and yet he continues to laud the straw poll as some kind of a outpouring of support for his candidacy.

In the meantime, Fox News just reported:

KARL ROVE RESIGNS

yeah he might have spent a lot of money there but look what it has goten him..

we are talking about him here....I mean that has to be worth a mill or so, wouldnt you think>?

and he has been all over the news about it......so it might be worth it.

and remember the ole 'big mo' idea........and he will be okay if he doesnt start screaming at people ........

and remember he is worth a lot of money.....you know.....someone the left HATES because they are successfull......well unless you are filthy rich because your old man was a 'rum runner' during prohibition.........

BL, I don't hate Romney but I do sort of think he ought to make up his mind where he stands on some issues. The flip flopping gets confusing.

40k tickets sold and 14k vote.

Hmm...something seems a bit fishy there.

We had issues with about 1500 votes.

Sure you did...a problem with who they voted for.

Ron Paul is just getting started. Once he's on a stage with 4 other people instead of 10, he will get more time. His message will be heard. His support will go up.

Take a close look at that. That gap is only going to get bigger and bigger. "We the People" are taking matters into our own hands. Fuck the Mainstream media.

2K7 only.

Up, up and away!
