The Federal Communications Commission has no intention of reinstating the Fairness Doctrine imposing a requirement of balanced coverage of issues on public airwaves, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said.

Corporate Media's Threat to Democracy
"Whoever controls the media, controls the peoples' minds."
There is no such thing in America as an independent press, unless it is in the country towns.
You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to writes (sic) his honest opinions, and if you did you know beforehand that it would never appear in print.
I am paid one hundred and fifty dollars a week for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with--others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things--and any of you who would be so foolish as to write his honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job.

first things first...just who decided the govt owns the airwaves anyways?

""first things first...just who decided the govt owns the airwaves anyways?""

So who would you suggest???
Should corporations own the airwaves??
Did they build them??
Did they buy them??

Doesn't "the government" really mean "the people?"

I think "the people" would agree in this case.

The GOP owns hate radio... what better advertisement as to what that party is ?

YOMELIB owns a hate mouth!

If this so-called 'fairness doctrine' is imposed on radio, it should also apply to TV and Newspapers --- which may mean that ABC, CBS, NBC, and the New York Times, etc, will have to carry opinions of people like Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and yes, Bill O'Reilly.

What is good for the gander should be good for the goose.

Then the country will have opinions from all sides at once, instead of being dominated by biased liberals.

I welcome this fairness.

Do you write your own material?

I'm actually against the Fairness Doctrine, not because I think it's wrong but because I believe it's unenforcable.
Who decides what is right wing or left wing? Half the country thinks that goons like O'Reilly are middle of the road independents.

Does the FCC not allow liberal talk on the radio airwaves? Liberals have just as much access to the airwaves as anybody else. The reason conservative talk dominates is money. People listen. So they can charge more for add time. And use that capital to expand. I know liberal talk has been tried. And it is successful in some markets. But in a majority of markets people just don't tune in. Consequently, there is no new capital to expand. No wonder liberals generally rail against capitalism.

Duh! "add" should be "ad"

We do not need the fairness doctrine. The problem is a few corporations owning the majority of the stations that broadcast radio. I was raised to believe that free enterprise was to be restrained by laws preventing monopoly to preserve competition and to give choices to the public.
Something the right and the left should have interest in preserving.
I do not want a right wing domination of anything anymore than I want a left wing domination.

"first things first...just who decided the govt owns the airwaves anyways?"

I don't know who originally decided, but the "F" in "FCC" stand for Federal.

Should corporations own the airwaves??
Did they build them??
Did they buy them??

In as sense they did build and buy them. I worked for Sprint in the '90s when cellular service was starting to take off. The FCC had auctions for specific bandwitdhs necessary for cellular operation. Sprint was paying as much as $1.1 billion for the rights to certain bandwidths in large cities.

"The GOP owns hate radio."

Call it what you want, but look what is successful and what's not.

Remind me about Air America's success?

"Who decides what is right wing or left wing? Half the country thinks that goons like O'Reilly are middle of the road independents."

Good point. On this blog I think people see me as a right wingnut. On a conservative blog I haunt they call me a commie pinko fag.

Liberals hate Democracy and a free market of ideas. You either believe in exactly what they believe in or you should be silenced. It is clear that Liberals control all tv networks, Hollywood films studios, and most radio stations. Unfortunately, because of a minority of outlets like Fox News Channel or Rush Limbaugh that are influential, the Liberals feel they have to do anything possible to shut down any and all opinions that are contrary to theirs. Liberals are like the Taliban, al Qaeda or the old school communists - shut down opposing opinion at all cost. Nice work Libs! You show your horrible true colors everday.

Fairness? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, depending of course, what is, is.

Who listens to talk radio?

oh, yeah- people sitting in traffic on the way to and from work. they're already angry, why not listen to some John and Ken!

of course, they only have to look at the tailpipe in front of them to realize just how much letting capital dictate policy has benefited them...

Hell I barely listen to radio period. Only time I listen to the radio is in the car and that is only to keep Me awake(I have been known to fall asleep at stop signs/lights. Hell I could listen to internet radio but haven't figured that one out. Oh well I am just a dumbshit I guess.

Larry, welcome to planet earth. We've known that about you for a long time now.

The guy from FCC pretty much hit the nail on the head. American's don't just get their news from the Radio/TV or Newspapers anymore. Blog's are the internet equivalent of Talk radio, can you imagine if the FCC tried to institue soem type of fairness doctrine in this medium?

This despite the fact that I think Hannity is one of the biggest weasels in America and can't stand to listen to him even when I'm tryign to here "the other side"

P.S. Tom Hartman isn't much better
