Florida's Everglades National Park is being overrun by pythons, South Asian snakes topping 300 pounds and 20 feet who are presumed to have entered the park as discards or escapees from the bustling international trade in exotic pets.

Got you in a stranglehold, baby

Where's our NRA Ted Nugent when you need him?

Pythons are nothing. There is a breeding population of cobra's in Southern Florida due to the release of "pets".

And now for something completely different.

Be Well.

People who own snakes and other reptiles are just creepy, period--then when the novelty wears off, or the damn things get too big, they just toss them into the nearest pond. I wouldn't mind criminalizing private ownership of reptiles. Don't like it, move to the Amazon.

"I wouldn't mind criminalizing private ownership of reptiles."

Or, at least non-native species, and not just reptiles. Any non-native species, even plants can cause huge problems.
When I was a kid I remember the water hiacinths they brought in, I think because they thought it would make good feed for cattle or something, it clogged so many rivers and creeks, made them unusable for boating, fishing, etc.

Suits me. Sign me up.

Careful, though--CalifChris might take your idea to include all non-native human beings.

Let the snakes have Florida. Never liked the state anyway.

What are you like 150 years old or something?

""What are you like 150 years old or something?""

Early 1960's is when this became a big problem.

This is bad and people are morons but it is not half as bad as the carp situation in the Mississippi.

"Bad" my ass!

Python Tries to Eat Alligator, Explodes
Wednesday, October 05, 2005

MIAMI, Fla. -- Alligators have clashed with nonnative pythons before in Everglades National Park. But when a 6-foot gator tangled with a 13-foot python recently, the result wasn't pretty.

The snake apparently tried to swallow the gator whole -- and then exploded. Scientists stumbled upon the gory remains last week.

I'm ashamed of you people. Who'll step up to the plate?

The overdevelopment and sprawl into previously natural areas has led to too many boring, environtmentally unfriendly Republicans who have poodles and other small dogs that are providing a buffet for the pythons, hence leading to a rise in python population.

environmentally

Jeb Bush eats Pythons too? I thought it was just live puppies.

"The vast majority of the $1 billion or so the government spends each year on invasive species goes to managing existing problems, with about 12 percent, according to a recent government report, going to prevention. In the meantime, the government estimates that invasive species cost the economy $100 billion a year."

Pythons, Florida, trees, forests.
