Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final volume of J.K. Rowling's all-conquering fantasy series, sold 8.3 million copies in its first 24 hours on sale in the United States, according to Scholastic Inc. -- more than 5,000 copies a minute.

Liberals rejoice! Our kids will be dabbling in the occult in no time!

Would this be kind of like how I was supposed to become a Satan worshipper after listening to Ozzy Osbourne when I was a teen-ager?

Tell Tipper I said 'Hi".

Does this mean the satanists win?
Fundies in Iran, saudistan and Buttfuck Arkansas mourn together....

Liberals rejoice! Our kids will be dabbling in the occult in no time!

You mean like Bush's Skull and Bones playtimes at Yale?

This was by far the best book in the series. Ms. Rowling does NOT disappoint her readers! And if those religious loonies had actually ever READ one of the books they would realize how totally off-the-wall ridiculous their claims are. After all, didn't a minister write "The Lion, The WITCH and The Wardrobe"? LOL! When it comes to pure evil, our current White House occupant and his puppet master, the AntiChrist Cheney, have cornered THAT particular market nicely.

Reding is fumdimantel.........Its gud thit kids er reding.............lerning who to rite is gud to................

Ah. Just when I was starting to take the poster seriously, she drives off a cliff with the last sentence. How unsurprising.

I think dawn was responding (retorting?) the statement that this book was evil...

But, no worries RiR - no one takes you seriously either...

"Ah. Just when I was starting to take her seriously"

YEAH!

Agreed! Condi is done!

"A few months ago, she decided to write an opinion piece about Lebanon. She enlisted John Chambers, chief executive officer of Cisco Systems as a co-author, and they wrote about public/private partnerships and how they might be of use in rebuilding Lebanon after last summer's war. No one would publish it.
Think about that. Every one of the major newspapers approached refused to publish an essay by the secretary of state. Price Floyd, who was the State Department's director of media affairs until recently, recalls that it was sent to the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and perhaps other papers before the department finally tried a foreign publication, the Financial Times of London, which also turned it down.
As a last-ditch strategy, the State Department briefly considered translating the article into Arabic and trying a Lebanese paper. But finally they just gave up. "I kept hearing the same thing: 'There's no news in this.' " Floyd said. The piece, he said, was littered with glowing references to President Bush's wise leadership. "It read like a campaign document."

Well, that's how it started. Then she called Cheney the AntiChrist, and claimed that the Bush White House has a monopoly on pure evil.
Only a few posts in, and even a thread about Harry Potter--a novel, last I checked--is used to call the Bushies "pure evil" in a greater flight of fancy than anything Rowling has ever put to paper. When I think of pure evil, the first people that come to mind are Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, Hussein, Mugabe, Amin. Silly me. If only I had been reading the Harry Potter series, I would have seen it was . . . George Bush!! And his puppetmaster Cheney!!

LOL.

Bush something or other.

-- Off Topic DR Poster

The piece, he said, was littered with glowing references to President Bush's wise leadership.

Talk about writing fantasy!

Apparently the fundies are now moving into Harry Potterland, only without referencing withcraft and spells, just kick-ass prayers. Like Christmas and Easter, there's very little the Chistians won't steal to make a buck.

Gotta give her credit on this last book... She did a really nice job wrapping things up...

And it didn't end with Harry, Ron and Hermoine eating onion rings in a diner and then just a blank page.

"Our kids will be dabbling in the occult in no time!"

Heavens no! I can't think of anything worse for a kid to be into.....

If this ever happens to your kid, they say the best thing to do is to find another hobby to keep attention away from Satanizing. If you catch your ten year old with a Harry Potter book, replace it with something else. Buy junior a rifle and take him on a canned hunt, for example. No book can compete with torturing a tame animal.

RiR, if you read the books you would know that there is most definitely a political subtext in which Ms. Rowling shows the EVILS of following a beaurocratic ruler blindly. And no, the evil beaurocrat is NOT Voldemort. So no, I don't feel that making that particular comparison about pure evil was particularly off topic.

You Rethugs post a slam on liberals in the FIRST post and don't expect a response?

fools

Really now who is the best example of evil today? Who comes to mind first?

Bush and Darth Cheney!

Get a grip RiR and LoLD

If you don't want to be reminded of how EVIL Bush and Cheney are... don't start off by slamming the folks who post here most...liberals.

idiots

besides

Harry Potter is awesome! What a great story.

My Evil Satan Worshipping kids love it.

Umm, OK.

Read it over the weekend. Lot's of action in this last one.

As far as the WH goes, Bush would HAVE to be Wormtail, while of course Cheney is Voldemort.

"there is most definitely a political subtext in which Ms. Rowling shows the EVILS of following a beaurocratic ruler blindly"

this last one it was especially obvious.

"OMG you have never even been in the same room with a woman..."

Hah, Briwo has no need for women. For him, big throbbing dong is where it's at.

I know gay jokes are a no-no here but I hope that one stays because it was really funny... big throbbing dong... LMAO!!

Tried reading one of the first books a few years ago and though i enjoy sci-fi and fantasy, was bored to tears, just too childish for me.

Good on A.K. for having kids line-up and slobber over a BOOK though.

Pancho: As you prgress the books became more and more for grownups too.

Try reading Book 4 and see if you don't agree.

bring back fond memories of visits to "Uncle Frank's" during summer vacation?

Then who is it, Dawn? (a real question, lol, not a smarmy sarcastic response! I'm really curious.)

I just thought the series was kind of anti-Fascist in a somewhat confused, amateurish, general sort of way. But I've found any number of interesting interpretations online.

I think some of the die-hard fans could have done a better job with the later books (from 4 to 7) than Rowling did! The whole thing really could have/should have been wrapped up in three books, or less!

And, to you ninnys who are afraid of 'dem Satanic ghosts, go boil your heads, lol.

I used to play Magic the Gathering (yes I'm a geek). My faith survived.

Never read the Potter books but I've enjoyed the movies. Again, I didn't stop being a Christian because Harry Potter is a wizard.

Make believe fantasy worlds don't really translate into a change of lifestyle IMO.

Anything that gets children to read is a good thing. Just sent a copy to the grandchildren (ages 9&10)

Damn, before you know it, them xians are gunna wanna burn all dem copies of the 'Wizard Of Oz'

But that's a horse of a different color!

If it gets kids to open a book and read instead of sitting in front of computer games all day -- I'm all for it.

You're right. Kids reading in this day and age is a terrible thing. They should be listening iPods and surfing the net instead. Then, when they can't read in the 8th grade, your republicant fantasy of dumbing down the country will have come to fruition.

I guess you missed the very first post. If not, then you have no excuse.

Good point, excellent point. Sometimes I forget that Harry Potter is the only children's novel in the universe.

Then, when they can't read in the 8th grade, your republicant fantasy of dumbing down the country will have come to fruition.

But look at ther number of Presidential candidateds they'll have to choose from. Well, from the white boys anyways...

Got my copy of Deathly Hallows on CD audio book... listening to it as I type. Started listening to them on audio book back in 2001 while driving a semi cross country and have been hooked on them ever since.

As a tip to parents of kids that don't seem to want to read... pick up an audio copy of the first book. Let them listen to it. When they want audio books for the rest, just tell them they will have to actually read the rest of the series and give them the books. I did that with my oldest girl when she was 11 years old (she just turned 16) and she is an avid reader now of many genres. I have a hard time prying books OUT of her fingers now. LOL

After all, didn't a minister write "The Lion, The WITCH and The Wardrobe"?

Yes, and it was an allegory for the story of Christ. Have you actually read the book or seen the movies? How would YOU interpret the part where Aslan offers himself as a sacrifice in substitute for the "sins" of Edmund then after killed rises from the dead? Or how about the last book of the series- "The Last Battle" that mirrors some points of the Book of Revelations?

BTW... I am a Christian and see no problem with Harry Potter. My mother didn't want to have anything to do with it, but I changed her mind on it. She loves the movies now.

Ratso read part of the first book but did not really enjoy it. Then he went to the 3rd movie. He grabbed all of the books and started reading them as soon he got home. He went back to see the 3rd movie again and it made a lot more sense.
I can't imagine how anyone could watch the later movies without reading the books.
All of the books are wonderful but this one is the best. We bought two copies at midnight and spent many hours reading. We took eating breaks but did not answer the phones or leave the house until we got to the end.

So, what level of Dungeon Master are you?

Right:
WTH are you talking about?

The correct answer is, Dungeon Master doesn't have levels. Dork.

Never mind.

Good point, excellent point. Sometimes I forget that Harry Potter is the only children's novel in the universe.

Well, it seems to be the only one that kids want to read. We should take that away from them. We all know they're just reading it to learn how to become wiccans.

Here Ms Rowling was a single mother, and without sufficient funds from the dole to keep the lights on to write the book in her home. So, being a Brit, quite naturally she repairs to a pub.

Here we have a case of the government supporting the arts, and the artist subsequently prospering.

The books certainly served their purpose. Ms Rowling is now richer than Queen Elizabeth, what is it - the eighth riches women in the UK, has married (hopefully with a pre-nup), has had another child, and is off the dole. This is successful social program.

The books "worked for her," certainly improved her life situation. She's an extraordianry woman, who persevered under adverse circumstances, and prevailed. Good for her.
