I'm interested to hear TOSSER's opinion. Wonder where he is.... Perhaps democracy will return to Pakistan. Time will tell.

If true democracy were restored to Pakistan, it is quite possible that a fundamentalist Islamist would be elected and implement Sharia law. Scary.

---Perhaps democracy will return to Pakistan. ---- The CJ being back in office HAS shown that that there is a functioning democracy and rule of law in Pakistan. This why the President could not fire him or throw him in jail... he could only suspend him and send him to court. Mushi has got limits to his powers. I remember a REAL martial law in the late 70s... in a martial law (or dictatorship) the President (or whoever) has unlimited powers. Nobody could question him because the Constitution was suspended back then (in the 70s). This is not the case today. ----If true democracy were restored to Pakistan, it is quite possible that a fundamentalist Islamist would be elected and implement Sharia law.---- Impossible. In all of Pakistan's history, the islamic bunch have never got more than 13% of the vote.

Tosser: Given the entire right here thinks a few al queda goons will be installing sharia law all over Iraq 5 minutes after we leave, 13% will have them wetting the bed. Besides, We helped maintain sharia law in afghanistan, so it can't be all bad.

North asserts, "Besides, We helped maintain sharia law in afghanistan, so it can't be all bad." It isn't a matter of judgement, it is a matter of principle. Whatever any American may think of Sharia, it is not principled to force any law, religion or system of belief on them. Their society is familiar with the structure of this law and it can be managed to evolve liberally over time. It isn't maintaining Sharia, it is not interfering with their choice of it . . .
