Iraq is a nation gripped by fear and struggling to meet security and political goals by September, U.S. officials said Thursday from Baghdad, dashing hopes in Congress that the country might turn a corner this summer. One general said not to expect a solid judgment on the U.S. troop buildup until November.

This would be Laughable if it wasn't so disgustingly Disheartening. Such utter and complete HORSESHIT.

Originally, they said this should all be wrapped up in 6 months.

But you can't blame them for being wrong. They never put much thought into the whole venture back then. It isn't as if they were the ones who were going to that shithole.

The moron has been on a 5 year hairbrained crusade taking longer and costing more than WWII. Guess what, the only plan is to squander money and lives for insider profits. But Shrub usually demands more time in 6 month increments. Why only two months when every NeoCon knows this is going to take fifty years?

struggling to meet security and political goals by September,

By struggling, they mean taking a month off and doing nothing else-times. The Parliament hardly ever has a quorum and Bush's Purple Finger to America Constitution was designed for gridlock.
Plan C: Run out the clock so Bush can pretend not to have failed.

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when ummm november ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when september err november ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when uh november ends

One general said not to expect a solid judgment on the U.S. troop buildup until November.

Fine, but if petraous doesn't come back with a detailed report in September showing measureable proof that the surge is working then there won't be any Novemeber judgement necessary at all.

General: November is the New September

6 months (Iraq) has turned into the new 6 years

"If there is one word, I would use to sum up the atmosphere in Iraq on the streets, in the countryside, in the neighborhoods and at the national level that word would be 'fear,'" Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

And this is progress? Can the war supporters that usually post here explain how this is progress?

In open testimony later Thursday, Crocker played down the importance of meeting major changes right away and said less ambitious goals, such as restoring electricity to a neighborhood, can be just as beneficial.

That's great. So, the "benchmarks" are no longer "benchmarks." Let's replace - Iraqi Security Forces are able to fight for themselves with Iraqi Security Forces have electricity and running water. SUCCESS!

I'm beginning to think that all this talk of "listening to the generals" is the problem. Maybe we should stop listening to the generals and start listening to the Prime Minister of Iraq, the Iraqi Parliament, the Iraqi people who have all said that it would be ok if the US just left. The generals are under the authority of the Commander in Chief and it is doubtful that they can speak freely. I would trust the judgement of the privates and corporals before I would the generals.

And this is progress? Can the war supporters that usually post here explain how this is progress?

That is one man's assessment... Sure there is fear in Iraq. There has also in recent months been a shocking move by the Sunnis to turn on Al Qaeda and fight them.

A timetable is going to be set for when we can leave Iraq, I'm betting a year from now we will begin drastically withdrawing our troops, but right now, there are glimmers of hope with this surge. Let's listen to the generals... especially Patraeus... he seems like the first guy there that really knows what he's doing.

For the days dwindle down
To a precious few...
September...November...
And these few precious days
I'll spend with you.
These precious days
I'll spend with you.

It would be great for something good to come of all of this.

I don't want another 2 years of this level of violence against our overstretched and underpaid military personnel. Folks going back for their 4th tour have had their fill. This isn't the war we sold on. The peace is not winnable by us. But, I hope and pray something good will come of it.

However, without an entity who can surrender, with an inexaustable supply of eager new insurgents (mostly from our buddies in Saudi Arabia), and an Iraqi government who've wallowed without accomplishing anything (including creating a standing Army in a country that had the largest military in the ME pre-invasion), i can't be optomistic. Not when 6 months is the new 6 years.

""Let's listen to the generals... especially Patraeus... he seems like the first guy there that really knows what he's doing.""

yeah, other generals who told Bush even before the invasion that he needed more troops are just figments of my imagination.
Oh, and no one told them not to disband the Iraqi Army or police...
...think about the death that has resulted from the decisions made by Bremer....did he get his medal of freedom yet????

yeah, other generals who told Bush even before the invasion that he needed more troops are just figments of my imagination

No they existed... and Rumsfeld should have given them more clout. He fucked up.

But now we have Patraeus who is executing a strategy that is making some waves. Yes, major mistakes were made, but that doesn't mean we just have to bail out in some Saigon style evacuation. Progress is being made, I think you guys can see it too.

""Progress is being made, I think you guys can see it too.""

Then there should not be any problem documenting it in Sept. Already they are talking about needing more time, this report says Nov. but I heard this morning that others are talking at least a year. I don't think they will be able to prevent Congress from acting that long, the Republicans who are up for reelection will rebel and some already are. Most likely the funds are going to be cut this year is my bet.

Funny how theres no senior Generals ie two or more stars left from the beginning of BUSH,CHANNEY, RUMSFELD fiasco!

Progress is being made, I think you guys can see it too.

Really? When did you leave the comfort of your cubicle to find this out?

Saddam had the water and electricity back to every household in Baghdad within 2 months of the end of the 1991 Gulf War.

People throughout Iraq are living like the Middle Ages gathering water in gallon jugs, and living without electricity in 120 degree heat.

Comfy in your air conditioned office? Stick your head in a warm oven for 10 minutes and tell us what you think about hiding in fear for 24 hours a day in sweltering heat without even TV to keep you occupied. Or, patrolling with a 60-100 pound pack on your back as our troops do, wrapped in Kevlar, watching your ass every second in the 120 degree heat.

"He fucked up"

"Yes, major mistakes were made"

I thoroughly enjoy the rationale of the righty. You criticize their actions initially, you are a traitor and a limp-wrist. You tell them that their plans are ridiculous and from a historic viewpoint can't possible work, you are just angry that they control all three branches of government. Now, when even the most dyed-in-the-wool righty can see the light, they act as if they are discovering the truth for the first time. That by saying things such as "mistakes were made" somehow makes up for the billions of dollars pissed away, the heightened threat of terrorism, and the thousands upon thousands killed.

Then they expect everyone else to be patient as the same folks who "fucked up" are allowed to do so again, when it's obvious to everyone but them.

"Or, patrolling with a 60-100 pound pack on your back as our troops do, wrapped in Kevlar, watching your ass every second in the 120 degree heat."

AllAmerican, remember, though, what Uncle Tony said about the Iraqi government taking August off; it's awful hot there in August in their air-conditioned buildings. Can our troops also take the month off?

And somehow, I have this notion that if you took Rob out for a few beers, eventually even he would start laughing at his own bullshit.

Does that mean there is no Thanksgiving? Or does that mean November is the new December and we eat turkey on Christmas day. Or better yet, November could be the new January and we could celebrate New Years a tad early. Just a thought.

Already they are talking about needing more time, this report says Nov. but I heard this morning that others are talking at least a year

A year is what is being asked for by the generals before any pullout begins because they think they really are making progress now...

An extra two months is being asked for until they have to report before congress about the state of the surge... I'm guessing for a bunch of reasons, but one being that the Iraqi gov't is taking off in August, and another being that they'll have a better picture of how its working in November then they would in September.

Then they expect everyone else to be patient as the same folks who "fucked up"

Rumsfeld is still in this Administration? You might want to check your sources if they're telling you that...

I said Rumsfeld "fucked up." He's long since gone... thankfully.

Actually, I have heard Rummy still has an office in the Pentagon, so he isn't gone he's just working less publicly.

Yeah Rob those extra TWO MONTHS will surely make up for everything that has gone wrong.

The two months is just a delay in when they report before Congress... the Year, however might make up for some things...

The surge has already seen some successes in areas of Baghdad and in Anbar...

You'd know that if you weren't so rich and powerful... us poor folk have time to read the news, unlike moguls such as yourself.

Rob - Go over there and fight for 2 more months you neocon chicken shit! How many more soldiers have to die over there so your Idiot Fuck Up president get another 2 months out of Iraq??????
Remember our solidiers that you claim to support are dying!!! Yeah, that is what I call support.

Rob - Go over there and fight for 2 more months you neocon chicken shit

no

"Yes, major mistakes were made, but that doesn't mean we just have to bail out in some Saigon style evacuation."

So how many soldiers have to die in order for us to withdraw in a style that doesn't offend your faux patriotic-macho sensibilities?

The troops should be brought home now as we have nothing to gain there and zero control over the ultimate outcome. Then they should be given an apology.

So how many soldiers have to die in order for us to withdraw in a style that doesn't offend your faux patriotic-macho sensibilities?

You want to ask retarded questions you're gonna get back retarded answers.

How about maybe we listen to our generals who say there is progress occuring thanks to this surge, and that yes we set a date to leave Iraq, but we keep the increased level going until then to see if we can right the ship? Nah... fuck that... you say there is nothing to gain... you know more Patraeus.

"How about maybe we listen to our generals who say there is progress occuring thanks to this surge, and that yes we set a date to leave Iraq, but we keep the increased level going until then to see if we can right the ship? Nah... fuck that... you say there is nothing to gain... you know more Patraeus."

Let's see: The White house if full of people who are proven inept at military planning and Middle Eastern affairs. They have also proven that they will fire any general who is "disloyal" to disagree with their delusions. By default, that means that anyone remaining is either an amoral yes-man or a delusional hack.

That's why.

Now why don't you use some more "cut n run", "fall of Saigon" rhetoric to tell us how people need to keep dying in Iraq until your ego is satisfied that "we" can leave with "honor"?

Fucking selfish coward.

Most virulent supporters of this war of military age didn't and won't go to Iraq.

I have this idea entire right-wing think-tanks are even now considering what line of bullshit will work best in covering that line of bullshit, for the sake of future "leaders" and their careers.

It's truly amazing that tens of thousands more people will have to die or be wounded and hundreds of billions more dollars must be expended just so Bush can delude himself that he didn't fail in Iraq. If he can make his successor end the war it will prove that he didn't fail, his successor did -- in his deluded and twisted mind, that is, nobody else's. The Republicans could stop this tragic farce by joining the Democrats to force him to end it but so far there's no sign of them doing so.
