Legislation that would have required longer troop rests between combat deployments fell today to a Republican filibuster, but GOP fissures over President Bush's war policies continued to widen, with two more Republican senators signing on to binding troop withdrawal dates. The Senate voted 56-41 to cut off debate on an amendment to the annual defense policy bill by Sen. James Webb (D-Va.) that would have mandated that troops be granted home leave between deployments of at least as long as their previous combat tours.

Good luck, senate republicans, in spinning THAT ONE come re-election time.

Support the Troops, Republicans!

What slogan is on the magnet decal for this?

"Support the Troops - Don't Let Them Come Home No Matter What"

Yeah, Repub war profiteers, way to go. Work our troops into the ground and then toss them aside when they get back home. No wonder the military can't get a single guy to sign up for the Republican Neocon wars.

Where is the story on the Haditha story??

Why aren't people demanding Murtha resign for calling these soldiers killers and --this guy is an asshole!

Murphy

Because they were killers. Next.

Murphy, It did come up on a different thread. Perhaps you could submit it.

I do have a question for you. Why do the Republicans hate our troops?

Yesterday, on the first in a series of Iraq amendments to the annual defense policy bill, seven GOP senators voted with Democrats to break a Republican filibuster of a proposal from Sen. James Webb (D-Va.) to require longer troop rest periods between combat deployments. Six of the seven Republicans are vulnerable 2008 incumbents. The effort still failed 56 to 41, with 60 votes needed for passage. But the seven Republican votes were surprising, considering that a similar measure in the House last spring was roundly denounced by Republicans as a "slow bleed strategy."

Vulnerable incumbents voting to block a filibuster, looking for political points, which leads to a vote, in which the Dem bill loses and the troops aren't allowed a neccessary break.

How do some people sleep at night?

Be Well.

Oops

sorry.

Be Well.

More politics with the lives of soldiers.

When the time comes, voting these guys out of office isn't enough to punish them.

Stocks. Town Square. Rotten Fruit.

How's about a filibuster proof senate in 2009 ? All in favor raise their hands.

HAND RAISED........

I'm there, and so is pretty much everyone at this point.

seeing how 95% of the washington republicans never served, they use this opportunity to send others to fight as a way of hiding their guilt, their shame for dodging the draft and/or never bothering to enlist..

if they can raise the flag high enough and appear patriotic then the public will never notice their own refusal to serve in the military.

shame on lieberman, shame shame on the republican congress for spilling the blood of american troops needlessly. That blood is on your hands. Unfortunately, some of them probably enjoy the taste of that blood, Lieberman would probably say it's "finger licking good!"

They did this just before the summer vacation, in the pre-vacation hiatus.

Right?

So why do Republicans hate our soldiers so much that they will not even allow them to be fully rested before deployments?

We are sure that you and your fellow soldiers will understand that even though you have been deployed in a combat zone you cannot have a proper rest period before you are shipped off on your next war zone deployment. The reasons for this are as follows.....

Oooooops gotta go on my month long vacation. I will get back to you on this when I return. Maybe.

Sincerely,

Right Wing Senators.

These guys volunteered so fuck em.
Signed,
Republican Party.

The Republicans who actually served in gorund combat all voted with the Dems. The Republican chickenhawks voted against the troops.
Says all you need to know about the GOP's feelings towards the military, doesn't it?

Where are all the righties to tell us how we need these volunteers to spend more time in Iraq????

My question on the vote is do they coordinate their voting so that the 6 GOPers who voted for the measure and face reelection in swing states know ahead of time that McConnell is going to pull the 60 vote majority for amendments? So they can safely vote for it knowing it wont pass? Or am I being too cynical. I have heard of these things happening before where the GOP caucus "allocates" votes to vulnerable members as long as they are sure that they have enough margin so the measure wont pass.

Why weren't the dems using this 60 vote trick when they were in the minority??

""My question on the vote is do they coordinate their voting so that the 6 GOPers who voted for the measure and face reelection in swing states know ahead of time that McConnell is going to pull the 60 vote majority for amendments?""

Of course they do. I've heard this discussed lots of times, read about it lots of times. It's common practice in both parties. Just recently even some of the front running Dems did the exact same thing on the funding bill.
And, I think it is impossible to be too cynical about our government.

Why weren't the dems using this 60 vote trick when they were in the minority??

They did, don't you remember the Republicans crying about giving them an up or down vote...and threatening the "nuclear option" of changing established Senate policy to stop the Dems from doing it? Of course, it is now ok for the Repubs to do it.

Because they were killers. Next.

no sir.....you are wrong and the facts coming out are showing that.

but here is what the article should have said..

gop senators block dems from insuring that surge fails by seeing that troop levels dwindle because of new terms of leave time.

they see it and we see it....its a ploy to keep the surge from succeeding, something that would make you lefties drool with delight.
the troop numbers have just reached the number targeted and the report is due out in september......and yet the left will use anything they can to see that they soldiers fail.........and you are the ones who accuse us of not supporting them......its an old story and you are just pissed because you wont be able to pull it off. and the senators are not telling the troops that thier leave time is shorter, just not longer.....

but the left will continue to lie and bullshit about it.

ANYTHING TO MAKE THE SURGE A FAILURE......thats the sad part.

""ANYTHING TO MAKE THE SURGE A FAILURE......thats the sad part.""

Yeah, BL, that's why they gave Bush more $$$ than he asked for. What a tool.
BL is already trying to shift the blame for the failure of the Surge.
Hey, if your president's policies don't succeed then blame those who disagree with them. Brilliant logic.

I am talking about this one issue...and I am also talking about how its represented in the media.....
we all know exactly what its about and its all about keeping the surge from succeeding.....pretty simple.

I am not trying to blame anything but I AM predicting the future comments from dems and how it all came about.

maybe should also mention that its not just the dems but their lapdog media that is on this 'push'.....

for instance I bet most of you havent even heard of the story of the antiwar nut who shot a returned soldier in the stomach because he said he was so frustrated with the war......

and there isnt a word about it in the national media......but just think if a soldier had shot an antiwar nut......oh my god.....the rage...the anger....the furor over our murdering military.....

BUSHLOVERTWO

125 degrees today in Baghdad. Imagine wearing Kevlar and carrying 60-100 pounds of gear in that kind of heat.

Meanwhile, many of these soldiers, still facing danger at every turn in our FIFTH year there, have children growing up they don't get to see. Then, they're not allowed the time stateside that morally should be theirs between combat tours. All because Bush has totally F'd up the military, recruitment is falling short, and we've sent home over 25,000 wounded so far who will meet with a VA who's budget Bush wants to CUT.

Man, your idea of a hero (Bush) is my idea of a complete nincompoop. Most of the world agrees with me.
Turn on your oven to 125, then hop inside and spend several hours. Bet ya couldn't stand 5 minutes of it, but you're more than happy for others to do it for months on end - and then have to go back shortly and do it again.

"Lefties," whatever they are, want the "surge" - the troops, if you will - to fail.

As big a crock, as vile an urban myth, as a "liberal" mainstream media and reproductive rights "killing babies."

Okay, as a civil libertarian I cannot accept censorship, but it behooves folks to set all bullshit straight. herm

Lefties," whatever they are, want the "surge" - the troops, if you will - to fail.

give me some vodka to go with this lemon maybe we can still fix it...

I just want to know, what is the "morally amount of time"? What those of you who have never bothered to serve your country other than bitching about everything, dont know is that the vast majority of the people get a year at home between deployments. Some people end up getting screwed because of their specialty fields being undermanned.

I am no huge fan of President Bush and was not a fan of President Clinton, but we who decided to sign on the dotted line understand that we follow the orders of the Commander and Chief.

The only reason that Congress gave the President more money than he assked for was to try and make it look like they are supporting the troops more than the president. And as BUSHLOVERTWO stated "ANYTHING TO MAKE THE SURGE A FAILURE".

Throughout the last 22 years that I was in, Democrats never did anything to help the troops. Thats why the military is about 75% Republican when it comes time to vote.

Let me reword my third paragraph before someone trys to put a spin on it. The Congress game addition funds to give the impression that they are supporting the troops. At the same time the Democrats will do anything within their power to make the sure a failure. That is the only reason they want more down time between deployments. If you can keep more people home longer then we cant send the necessary amount over to fight. By doing that it makes it look like the surge didnt work. Remember it is coming up on an election cycle.

"Thats why the military is about 75% Republican when it comes time to vote."

Not so fast there Sicko...

According to the Military Times 2006 Poll only 46% of those surveyed identified as Republicans - down from 60% 2 years earlier.

Only 35% approved of Bush's handling of the war, and slightly over 50% approved of his job handling overall.

66% of those surveyed had been deployed at least once to Iraq or Afghanistan so this wasn't a bunch of statesiders in cushy jobs.

""That is the only reason they want more down time between deployments.""

Suuuure. Make it up as you go along. Hey Democrats kill babies too. And we eat children. And we just want our soldiers to die in Iraq cuz only Republicans care about the troops and that is why many are on their third or fourth rotation in a war that the Rethugs told us would last a few months, incur low casualties and cost 75 billion max. Yeah, it's just our negativity that has turned Iraq into a chaotic shit hole and empowered Iran (as expected by everyone with a brain) to become a bigger threat to the rest of the region.....stop here Danni, this fool aint worth your time.

Again you are clueless,

The Military Times poll? who cares about another poll. Polls have been used to show someones own point of view for a long time. In case you havent noticed, the even those papers are full of liberals writing.

And go ahead and stop Danni, I actually served in the military and can debate you all day long on this.

"Again you are clueless, The Military Times poll? who cares about another poll."

That is a really, really weak defense Sicko. The Military Times has a left-wing agenda? But I bet you'd have no problem citing a poll that supported your contention.

Speaking of that, I would assume you could post some sort of link showing that: "Thats why the military is about 75% Republican..." is a valid statement.

Or are you, perhaps, stating an opinion that has no basis in fact?

"I actually served in the military and can debate you all day long on this."

Unless you're one of those "returning former posters", this is your first day here. We have lots of military and former military folks on here. Some of them agree with your viewpoint and some do not.

Just being in the military does not grant you automatic credibility or make your opinions indisputable.

The Republicans need Wonder Woman's bracelets for all the deflecting they have to do...

Good luck with that...

"SUPPORT THE TROOPS"... (to go f*ck themselves)...

Sincerly,
The Conservative Party of America,

Republicans need Wonder Woman's bracelets

I didn't realize this was a thread about Giuliani....

More hypocracy from the Republicans again and this shouldn't surprise anyone. Why doesn't Limbaugh let everyone know the chickenhawks don't have any real claws preferring to hide behind their luxury cars and golf on the greens. See how many conservatives actually served in the military. Check this website out and then put Rush Limbaughs feet to the fire and call him or his station when he spouts out about Dems being wussies. The truth hurts.

REPUBLITARD...

FF for you...

Makes me wish that I had a sense of humor...

"Why do Republicans hate our military?"

Actually, they don't. They don't hate the troops any more than they would hate the pawns on a chessboard.

They just consider them dispensible.

I actually served in the military and can debate you all day long on this.

Colin Powell was ex-military when he sold the WMD story at the UN. Oh yeah the those that served in uniform all have impeccable credibility and know all there is to know about war.

Thats why the military is about 75% Republican when it comes time to vote.

Well that doesn't look like such a desirable statistic now that Powell is just another Republican piggy squealing "it wasn't my fault I was just following orders" all the way home. This is not to mention that one general after another has failed to demonstrate enough effective leadership to quell the violence in a country that prior to invasion endured over a decade of sanctions and possessed little substantial weaponry to defend itself.

OOOOOOOOPPPPPPs! Oh darn there I go attacking the sacred cows in uniform...
