So far you are the only one here who is at least demonstrating a desire to enlightened yourself about this word. You are going to need to apply some brain work and a little bit of elbow grease by doing research on this word, simply going to a dictionary or encyclopedia isn't going to provide you with the information you need. Also, you then need to do some studying up on the power of thoughts and words. This is not an assignment for the mentally lazy, you will need to use some discipline and apply yourself. Username Emancipator - I am happy for you to try to clean up some areas of black culture, but at the same time, white people are copying many aspects of it, like we have always done - stealing stuff like that from y'all - and although using rap as a way to come together may not be the healthiest basis, a lot of white people also have a right to feel disenfranchised by The Man. Back when I lived right off of Cleveland Avenue on the south side of Atlanta I felt like I was almost considered an honorary black person by the other people in the neighborhood after I had been there for a long time. I did not use the N word, though, knowing that would not be acceptable. But I had a strong desire to have some words with a black lady one day in the laundromat who was calling her 5-year-old son "nigga" saying stuff like "quit playing with that buggy and come here and sit down, nigga." It made me angry for her to talk to an innocent boy like that.

Man, the whole problem is so deep and so complex. It cannot be buried by the tactics of political correctness.

GRUMPY - This is not about Julian Bond and/or the NAACP what's happening here is bigger than all of them and you and I. Understand something else, this is a grassroot movement, the NAACP, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson are all johnnie come latelys, they had no part in the start of this movement. There are far too many of us who have ready made opinions but yet know nothing about the history of the n-word. It came to Spanish from the Latin word niger. It may have come to Latin from Greek, but my ancient Greek is a little rusty. Can't remember the Greek word for "black."

There are several conflicting stories as to where the word Negro/n**ger originated from depending on whom you are talking to. And if you ask a linguist they amongst themselves don't necessarily agree.

However, supposedly the word Negro is Spanish for black. The Spanish language comes from Latin, which has its origins in Classical Greek. The word Negro in Greek, is derived from the root word `necro`, meaning dead. The act of ancestral worship known as necromancy or communication with the dead, was the practice of the Egyptians in order of honoring the lives of ancestors Who came before.

They believed by doing so could offer guidance and direction to the living. Temples (monuments) were designed as places where the ancestors could be honored, and holidays (Holy Days) were the days designated for worshipping. The Greeks thought of these sun-burnt people (Egyptians) to have a preoccupation with death and didn`t understand the worship of the dead (Necromancy), and took their distorted beliefs back to Europe and the word Negro evolved out of this misunderstanding.
