Sen. Pete Domenici (N.M.), a 36-year Republican veteran of the Senate, abandoned President Bush's Iraq war policy today by publicly endorsing legislation designed to withdraw nearly all U.S. troops from Iraq by March 2008.

Turn out the lights, the party's over.

I think too the US should begin withdrawing soon. Too painful to see our dedicated soldiers giving their lives for people whose only goal is self-destruction, hatred and revenge.

Don't forget money. Lots and lots of money.

The party ain't over until the fat lady sings. I think that's Cheney. Seriously, EVERYone wants out except those in the White House. Why is no one DOING anything about it? herm

Lugar, Voinivich, Warner and now Domenici?

4 defections of senior republicans in 2 weeks is a good indicator of just how seaworthy these rats see the SS Titanic II aka BushCo as being these days.

ie taking on water big time.

The only folk still dedicated to this war are doing so out of corporate greed or mis-placed loyalty.

Be Well.

damn 8 months prior to the nov. elections...

I am sure this is just an accident and not a calculated political move on pete's part...LOL

Mr. bush better not be feeding his dog on the cheap.... laura may join the stampede before its over...

Nah, a true patriotic Republican running for re-election would never turn his back on an unpopular President after 6 years of kissing his ass. That'd be like Lugar writing a speech opposing the war while voting to continue the war. Would never happen in the Party of values.

You don't keep a seat on the Senate for 20+ years by not being good at seeing how the political wind blows.

My guess is that all these gentlemen have told the WH, in advance, that these comments were coming, which is why you really don't hear many retorts coming out of Bush on these defections.

.......a day late........a dollar short......

Uh oh....

Luger...
Voinovich...
Domenici...

The list keeps getting longer and longer.

Wonder when Thompson joining the team?

Ex-Watergate prober: Thompson 'was mole for the White House'

According to an article in Wednesday's Boston Globe, GOP presidential hopeful and former Republican Senator from Tennessee, Fred Thompson leaked information to the Nixon white house during the height of the Watergate investigation. In his capacity as the Senate Watergate Committee minority counsel, Thompson tipped off Nixon's attorney that the committee was aware of the president's secret tapping device, and would be making the information public.

Correctamundo ROC! We may differ on just about everything else but you hit the nail on the head with this one. If the WH thought it would be damaging for them to publicly say that they want a different direction for Iraq they would immediately issue a statement to counter whatever negative effect it may reflect. The fact that they all have been loyal to Bush's Iraq policy until now shows how insignificant it is to the WH. The proof of the extent to which they are discontent with the current policy will come when it is time to vote on a plan for phased withdrawl. So far its only been lip service for the media.

I welcome Sen. Pete Domenici (N.M.) to the club. If his words are true, perhaps the next strategy is to enlist him to speak to the President to get a plan in place to leave Iraq. Last time I was there soldiers were asking me to help them get out of there even if it meant others taking their place. I see Bush as having really damaged the morale of the troops.

So Pete discovers his conscience buried deeply within his partisan soul. Oh well, sorry about the loss of your sons mothers, sorry about the hundreds of billions pissed away, but Pete has seen the light now just in time for America to forgive and forget.

I see Bush as having really damaged the morale of the troops.

Yet more and more seem to want to re-up and stay until the job is finished. It is almost laughable to claim Bush has hurt the moral of the troops. Consider the Majority leader of the Senate going on record claiming the war is lost, the troops can't get the job done and threatening to cut off the funds and leave them high and dry.

Domenici: this is the same assbag that was at the center of the US attorney firings.

To use a classic Larry Mohr line:
Domenici, Voinivich, Hagle... are as signifigant as a pimple on a gnats ass

How "courageous" of the Senator. Gee, he's up for re-election and now he's changing his tune. I wonder if Rep. Boehner's (R-Ok) is going to go into his office and start to cry about this like he did when the democrats asked for pretty much the same thing.

How shameless and pathetic the GOP has become. They are our troops biggest enemy at the moment.

Just wait till Dubya finds out Laura has an autographed picture of Cindy Sheheen.

I have never met a politician in Washington, or any American for that matter, who chose to be called "unpatriotic." Nor have I met anyone who did not believe he wholeheartedly supported our troops wherever they may be.

What I have heard all too frequently from various individuals is sharp accusations that because their political opponents disagree with them on the need for foreign military entanglements, they were "unpatriotic, un-American, evil doers deserving contempt."

The original American patriots were those individuals brave enough to resist with force the oppressive power of King George. I accept the definition of patriotism as that effort to resist oppressive state power. The true patriot is motivated by a sense of responsibility, and out of self interest -- for himself, his family, and the future of his country -- to resist government abuse of power. He rejects the notion that patriotism means obedience to the state.

Resistance need not be violent, but the civil disobedience that might be required involves confrontation with the state and invites possible imprisonment.

Peaceful non-violent revolutions against tyranny have been every bit as successful as those involving military confrontation. Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. achieved great political successes by practicing non-violence, yet they themselves suffered physically at the hands of the state.

But whether the resistance against government tyrants is non-violent or physically violent, the effort to overthrow state oppression qualifies as true patriotism.

True patriotism today has gotten a bad name--at least from the government and the press. Those who now challenge the unconstitutional methods of imposing an income tax on us, or force us to use a monetary system designed to serve the rich at the expense of the poor, are routinely condemned. These American patriots are sadly looked down upon by many. They are never praised as champions of liberty as Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. have been.

Liberals, who withhold their taxes as a protest against war, are vilified as well--especially by conservative statists.

Unquestioned loyalty to the state is especially demanded in times of war. Lack of support for a war policy is said to be unpatriotic. Arguments against a particular policy that endorses a war once it's started, are always said to be endangering the troops in the field. This, they blatantly claim, is unpatriotic and all dissent must stop. Yet it is dissent from government policies that defines the true patriot and champion of liberty.

It is conveniently ignored that the only authentic way to best support the troops is to keep them out of dangerous, undeclared, no-win wars that are politically inspired. Sending troops off to war for reasons that are not truly related to national security -- and for that matter may even damage our security -- is hardly a way to "patriotically" support the troops.

Who are the true patriots: those who conform or those who protest against wars without purpose? How can it be said that blind support for war, no matter how misdirected the policy, is the duty of the patriot?

It is much more courageous to speak up when all those around you will not.

You are aware on average we have lost more troops during a five year span unrelated to combat.

"...the only authentic way to best support the troops is to keep them out of dangerous, undeclared, no-win wars that are politically inspired...."

Crispee speaks truth I had not expected from Crispee. Remember that this "war" was designed largely to keep the public's attention from more domestic atrocities so "our leader" could be a "wartime president" whom it is "unpatriotic" to oppose. herm
