Ho hum--Thurmond was never a liberal, and never a real democrat---he was a dixiecrat and they left the democrat party in 1964 over civil rights along with Jesse Helms and Ronald Reagan, joining the republican party of bigotry because it represented their views and the views of their constituents. The 39 electoral vote Thurmond got were all from the southern bigotry states. Thurmond ran for the Presidency on a bigot platform. His bigoted views never changed, and neither did Helms or Reagan although Reagan kept his mouth shut about it for the most part and the conservative press never mentioned it of course. Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond were the HEART of the bigoted republican party for over thirty years---keeping the country in the 19th century as long as possible with their bigotry and ignorance. It is still the party of bigotry and ignorance--nothing has changed.

I'm not going to canonize Robert Byrd, but I don't think it's fair to conclude that a man can't change. Okay, he was in the Klan many years ago. He's not in the Klan now, and he has apologized many times for once associating with such a despicable organization.

The South in general, and the nation in general, was openly racist for much of its history. That is changing.

It's disingenuous at best to keep sticking that Klan label on Byrd. It's fair to leave KKK references in Byrd's biography, but it's a pointless distraction to base your current view of him on what he did 60 years ago.

I had just watched the immigration shamnesty vote on CSPAN so i was watching the second Senator Byrd came on the screen. His hand did shake a lot but so what. You don't "think" with your hand.

Senator Bryd let's us watch history live as there won't be many more statesmen like him left to watch on the Senate floor. I for one will be very sorry to see him retire.

You are correct, but BBob makes a semi-valid point. Most Dixiecrats had to make a decision as to which way their electorate was going during the 60's, and in WV Byrd's voters were staying Democrats, whereas Thurmond's were changing parties in droves. However, I bet that if the WV Dixies had fled the Democratic Party in the numbers that the Carolinians did, Byrd would be a proud member of the GOP.
