NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Wednesday he was not a candidate for the 2008 U.S. presidential election despite having changed his political affiliation to independent from Republican.

A day after announcing the shift, Bloomberg said -- as he has before -- that he intended to serve as mayor until the end of his term in 2009.

OK, by show of hands, who believes him? I hope he doesn't but for someone like him there's nothing left to accomplish but ego stuff.

I hope he doesn't

San, why do you hope he doesn't run?

If he does run it will hurt the Dems.

Bloomberg: I'm Not Running...for now.

I think Bloomberg's waiting until after July when Fred Thompson will announce whether or not he's running for Prez.

Bloomberg as VP on the same ticket with Thompson as prez candidate would be a strong chance for Republicans to take the White House but I don't thing Bloomberg would take a No. 2 spot.

Sure Bloomer , you say that now .
It's not about iraq you fools , it's about illegal immagration and the criminals that are here , send them all back , they are not Americans , they are breaking our laws .
I'm fed up with this human garbage trying to sneak into cuba , russia , china , india , iran , iraq , afghanastan . All the countries of brotherly love , God fearing .

I think he just decided that the Presidency has been devalued by GW to the extent that it isn't worth that many billion of personal funds anymore.

I think it would be great if he didn't run (though I wouldn't object to him being a candidate) because it sends a message or a realization that things don't have to be as they are. Think bigger.

We have three branches, why not three parties?

Bloomberg: I'm Not Running

Not yet.

Bowa - mostly because I don't think he really wants it - its just another thing to tick off on his "to do" list for him.

I might feel a little differently if it was some sort of grassroots effort by the people to bring in another candidate. But I'm not sure that having a candidate that can run for President mostly because he has the ability to write a check for it is a step in the right direction.

I call this move "trading in the Edsel."

He has NO CHANCE WHATSOEVER, a dead fish would gather more votes.

I think Bloomberg is waiting till February 6, 2008 which is when we will likely know who the two major party candidates will be.

Your appeal to "class" warfare was already used by Bloomberg's opponents in his first run for mayor --all his critics proved to be wrong as Bloomberg has shown he is no "amateur' politicain who just ran formayor because he needed to figure out something to do with all his wealth. He has been a good mayor -- not as revolutionay as Giuiliani - but he certainly has 'stayed the course" and continued on the path Rudy set for the city -- and he has been far less combative in doing it. Which many people view as a good thing.

I believe, Whether he can fund his campaign himself or not will be inconsequential to most people -- Bloomberg's appeal will be judged by his personal charisma and on his record as mayor. I think that most Americans admire him, and like him -- and that presents a real threat to the major party candidates.

"Your appeal to "class" warfare was already used by Bloomberg's opponents in his first run for mayor"

Bowa - I wasn't appealing to "class" warfare. You asked why I hoped he wouldn't run - I gave you my personal opinion on the issue. Nothing more.

Perhaps you were really just looking for another opportunity to pontificate.

San, OK, I apologize. If you weren't appelaing to "class warfare" so be it.

I took your comment that Bloomberg's ability to "write a check" as the major reason reason why you believed he should not run as suggeting that his own money was less sacred in some way then money attained from a "grasss roots" campaign.

That to me smacks of "class warfare' but if that wasn't your intent I'll take your word for it.

A day after announcing he was no longer a Republican, Bloomberg, 65, reiterated he intends to serve as mayor until the end of his term in 2009 and then pursue philanthropy.

Hmm maybe I should hit him up for money. Since the government says I'm deserving enough maybe he would feel diferently.

Anyone know his personal email?

""Bloomberg as VP on the same ticket with Thompson as prez candidate would be a strong chance for Republicans to take the White House but I don't thing Bloomberg would take a No. 2 spot.""

That is NEVER going to happen even if Thompson agreed to take the VP slot because they disagree on almost every issue. Bloomberg is very liberal on social issues while Thompson is whatever he thinks will make him popular with right wing nuts. He, like Romney determines his views from opinion polls even though "he isn't running haha."

since this is a campaign thread lets look at something...

there was the manaca comment and a couple of others uttered by candidates from the right and there was sanctamonius outrage from all corners of the moveon crowd.

but look at what I found in a little bitty section of the back of the first section of the houston chronicle.

barack obama issued a round of apologies for a memo generated by his campaign staff that referred to mrs clinton as a senator from the indian region of punjab and critizied her record on outscourcing.....
so was he saying that clinton was guilty of what?

and what does this mean.....oh OOPS WAIT A MINUTE..........I forgot....it doesnt matter......they are democrats...they can say anything they want.....

well nevermind then

Bloomberg as VP on the same ticket with Thompson as prez candidate would be a strong chance for Republicans to take the White House but I don't thing Bloomberg would take a No. 2 spot.

He won't run as a republican. I think he could kick Clinton's ass as a dem. He would be their strongest canidate.

Thompson is whatever he thinks will make him popular with right wing nuts. He, like Romney determines his views from opinion polls

I thought Bill Clinton had a copyright on that.

"I'm not running...."

"...yet."

"but look at what I found in a little bitty section of the back of the first section of the houston chronicle."

Uhm, yeah, little bitty. Its only been a prominent story on the cable news channels for the last 2 days. You really ought to get around more.

So:

It wasn't an ethnic slur so doesn't qualify for "sanctimonious outrage". It was a dumb remark aimed to show that Clinton might be more interested in representing Indian special interests than her own constituents. I don't think it even required an apology, but it sure as hell .was NOT a macacca-esque moment BL2

I have a t shirty that reads, " you see three branches of Govt. I see Firewood.

The guy thinks it's his job to outlaw foods and products.

Throw him in with the same rotten catagory with the rest of the political nannies.

Outlaw food: He didn't outlaw food. He supported the New York Board of Heath in their ban of transfats, which are unnecessary to the production of food, and are linked to significant health risks. The situation is not unlike similar bans preventing the adulteration of food.

Outlaw products: He vetoed the ban on aluminum bats.
