"The crash occurred Saturday night during an "exhibition burnout" -- when a driver spins his tires to make them heat up and smoke -- at the Cars for Kids charity event in Selmer, located about 80 miles east of Memphis."

Up here that's refered to as "ripping off some nuts"

Nuts being "donuts"

Which if yer doing it correctly is what the tire marks look like on the ground when yer done.

Spud knows a bunch of punky kids who do this a lot and film themselves doing so.

It aint rocket science but it's a good waste of rubber and time if yer so inclined.

How the fuck this asshole blew it to the point where folk got killed is a puzzlement.

Thoughts and prayers to the surviving family members.

Lousy way to die.

Be Well.

"Lousy way to die."

Hey
We all gotta go.

Realizing that fact at the age of 5 didn't make me want to hurry it up, though. Life is to be lived. It's been a lot of fun, really.

"Life is to be lived"

"We're here fer a good time
Not a long time
So haff a good time
The sun can't shine
Every day."

Life should be worth living.

All lives.

No point in being a
Drag!

Be Well.

SPUD:

Sorry but this is most certainly not doing dough nuts.

A burnout drag racing style, is and must be only in a straight line.

Any deviation results in what happened at this event.

"A burnout drag racing style, is and must be only in a straight line."

Yeah, and now Spud sees why.

Keith is photog guy?

Cool!

Does this kinda tragedy occur with any regularity in the world of pro drag racing or is it a really rare freak occurance?

Be Well.

Add:

In pro drag racing, every move from before starting to speed of backup is calculated.

The two teams exchange the exact time of prepping before starting.

Anything but an exact spin and back/up is a mistake.

Seconds can mean way too much power or smoking tires on the run.

You will see a very pissed off crew chief if the competitor screws up.

Done some professional drag racing photography meself over the years. The best burnout artist is Mr. Arnie Beswick, IMHO. Whole track and very safe.

This event should never have been staged on a public road. First, no serious guard rails, and none at all where the mishap occurred. Second, the road surface of a drag strip is the only place burnouts should be performed with an all-out race car. Third, what were people doing lining the road? Reading the article, I found that the crew blamed the accident on road surface conditions. Duh! It's not designed for pro stock race cars!

Looks as though this charity is now going to face big lawsuits. Sad all the way around, but racing is for drag strips, with big guard rails and bleachers. Highways are for driving places. Of course, this country needs more drag strips to keep racing where it's safe.

Who says rednecks and Darwin can't come together?

I didn't know RuPaul stuffed His/Her bra with explosives. When did this happen??

Larry

Ya, saw this video on CNN.. what's totally ridiculous is that they keep saying "there was no guard rail" ..

It doesn't matter that there wasn't a guard rail there. If there was and that car spun out of control, it's just as likely to bounce to the other side of the track and jump the rail.

The people WERE TOO FUCKING CLOSE. Someone is negligent here, but I'm not sure if it's the people that put themselves in that position or the coordinators of the race. Anybody that's been around drag racing knows this was inevitable, it was just a matter of time...

This is not about hindsight being 20/20 .. they knew better.

I wonder if there was an insurance company that covered this event.. they failed as well.

Another thing that is totally ridiculous is the fact that this was done on a street, not on a drag strip.

"It ain't really safe to do anything with drag cars on a city street," said 19-year-old spectator Garett Moore, who said he was about 15 feet away from the wreck, but was uninjured. "They shouldn't have done it."

Look where this happened, a part of the country that doesn't believe in many regulations, or codes telling them what to do.

This is in Tennessee for pete sake. I mean come on We aren't talking a whole lot of sense with allot of these folks. Hell when I lived in Clarksville in 2000 there was a Grocery Store that You could smoke in believe it or not. Of course one of the Hot Sexy checkers was Smoking to beat the band. Oh Tennessee is OK just they do things different down there,
Tennessee where if You can't defeat Your Politicial Opponette Legally just shoot them Ala Byron Low Tax Looper can tell You dat.

Larry

The people WERE TOO FUCKING CLOSE. Someone is negligent here, but I'm not sure if it's the people that put themselves in that position or the coordinators of the race.

How about both? The
amateur video shows how crazy the stunt was. The organizers were crazy to do it, and people were crazy to stand alongside a road that close to the dragster.

Which stupid, negligent, arrogant, jackass stages something like this on a public road with spectators standing next to the substandard guardrails, when there are any at all, and next to absolutely NOTHING as in this case?!?!!?!

A burnout can go wrong even on a well-prepped dragstrip where the crowds are safely behind a fence. It's not so easy to do safely. On a public road, the chances of losing control increase dramatically.

Geesh... this one really didn't need to happen.

Was it an alcohol Funny Car or something like that?

Sorry but the organizer is in charge of crowd control. No control, no show, imo.

My God out in the Open without concrete deviders Unbelievable. You would have thought they would have used at least those. But there was hardly ANYTHING there. Nucking Futs is all I can say.

Procomp-blower car-not nitrous

Procomp-blower car-not nitrous

OK, say it seven times, fast!

From what I can hear. (will not install windows media player) the pro-comp car exceedes the "safe" zone with a "Chitown" style burnout.

On a flat drag strip it can get way out of hand.

Public streets are crowned , for water drainage. Very bad for a few thousand horse power.

The whole act seems to be a lot of poor judgment.

Things like this have happened in the past. A fuel altered in a fire burnout in a parking lot. Throttle locked open and....

A Pro Comp car is a 100% track only race car. On the track, accidents happen frequently enough.

It is bad enough that this kind of power was authorized. Believe it or not. Street racers (illegal), race this kind of power weekly.(usually nitrous cars)

Most people think of street racing a souped up street cars. Not so. I have heard of anything but top fuel and funny car. All other classes have been done.

I'm sure they'll look angelic in their coffins in full mullet regalia.

Standing one the side of a road as a dragster hits 150 mph...what could possibly go wrong?....It's called thinning out the herd!

Drag strips are crowned too for the same reason, however the have groves worn into them that helps them keep straight a little bit. pro modified run around 2500 hp and you will not see them street racing. nor will you see many 2500 hp car that are in any way streetable.
Also drags are very safe, rarely will you see any significant accident or injury even with the 8000hp big boys.

Panchvilla nailed it.

This should be on the Darwin awards.

I grew up watching all the great drag racers- The Snake, Big Daddy the little Red Wagon.

I cannot imagine lining up on the side of a track after all of the crazy stuff I have witnessed-

Windshields flying out, parts landing in the crowd, cars catching on fire, cars flipping through the air, cars hitting the bails of hay at the far end of the track, parachutes failing- i can keep going.

Yes, it is in everyone's best interest to line up an eigth of a mile down the track while holding a slurpee....

Would you stand in front of a gun if you knew it was going to go off? stand on a golf course where people are about to tee off?

it is sad, but JHC, can't we be responsible for some of our decisions? the driver should get vehicular manslaughter. wtf was he thinking?

Was he disqualified? I mean, afterall, he did cross the yellow line.

This was a public road with people lining it to watch ......and w/o guardrails!

I smell a Darwin Award!!!

Whoo-ee, Jethro; that blowed up good!

doing donuts is when you floor the gas and cut the wheel hard.

A burn out is not doing donuts

I heard today that 7 died.

The last time I saw anybody in person wearing a mullet was when I went to see Eddie Rabbitt in concert. May he rest in peace.
