Vatican City - US President George W Bush drew gasps at the Vatican on Saturday by referring to Pope Benedict XVI as "sir" instead of the expected "His Holiness", pool reporters said.

Oh no!

He's hellbound for sure, now.

What a dolt.

I grieve for my country.

Leave it to Shrub to fuck it up.

Bush did something right for a change. I would call him Ben or Joe.

images.villagevoice.com

A small amount of decorum out of the president would be nice.

The "sir" part doesn't bother me that much, since Bush isn't a Catholic. I'm actually surprised Bush didn't call him Ben.

But what's with how ya doin' and crossing his legs in audience with the Pope? Or the thing with the beer the other day.

His mother did raise a fool.

It could have been worse, he could have thrown up on the Pope or even rubbed his ass like he did with Merkel some time ago.

Mark this one in the history books --

For ONCE, I am going to side with Bush and excuse his manners.

I happened to be up watching tv when CNN International broke in and showed it 'live' as the Bushes' motorcade drove up to the Vatican and kept the cameras on them all the way up to when he sat down with the Pope.

Bush did not look well.
He had been sick the day or so before and canceled meeting with the G8 crowd. When he got out of the car to walk in to meet the Pope he looked very pale, and very tired and drawn. The report even said that Bush had stated he was in only in a "listening mode" -- which I gathered meant he was too ill to do much talking.

Bush wasn't smiling or anything until he actually met with the Pope and then he had a wide smile but you could tell he wasn't feeling up to par. So if he crossed his legs (which I don't see what the big deal is about there) when he sat on the other side of the Pope's desk -- big deal. Bush had to sit on a fairly small chair opposite the Pope and I think most guys would have sat the same way.

Okay, that's enough of defending Bush.

Who cares?

heh, I'm not fan of bush but this is really hysterical imho. So he addresses Ratzi the Nazi as sir instead of some pompous title given to him by a bunch of child molesting criminals that wear pointy hats. Fucking vatican is being run by a bunch of mobsters anyways, their swiss bank accounts are heavy with gold and they practically own the caymen islands, they do not deserve to be treated with the respect given to holy men.

He had been sick the day or so before

Three cases of O'Doul's will do that to a guy.

Who cares?

Rudolph Giuliani.

Then why is Bushie doing going to see such a monster and attempting to show him respect---why didn't he just pull out a nine and cap his pointy headed ass---or just stayed home and fucked up America a little more while he has the chance.

Man, I'd love to knock that stupid hat off the pimp's (sorry, "pope's") head. Kiss your ring? How 'bout you kiss my A$$.

Hey ya stupid Micks - Mary was the mother of the *man* Jesus, not God. You idiots. Learn some critical thinking...

Stop your prayers to her, good woman tho she was, she can't help you.

Post a story on Catholics / The Pope on here and the religious BIGOTS come out in force.

Not really a shock or a surprise as BIGOTS are always around.

Why didn't he call him "Madam"?

Then why is Bushie doing going to see such a monster

It's all part and parcel of the grand charade world leaders take part in.

And then Audrey, there's the Even Grander Parade in Heaven.

I have equal parts of respect for the catholic hierarchy and BUSH : Zero=0

I don't support dictatorships. I'm sorry if you have a problem with that.

Oh goody goody. You are all gonna love the new book...The Vatican Reich...coming soon!

If only the Pope and Bush had a a discussion about a gay person in Iraq
having an abortion, there would be no need for any other headlines here.

It would be the "perfect storm" story for posting on the Retort.

Cheers

I see says the blind man who picked up his hammer and saw.

there would be no need for any other headlines here

Hmmm, that has me thinking of what would be the perfect story headline for the Retort?

Probably something like:

Lesbian Iraqi terrorist, who was linked to 911, becomes born again at Gitmo and now regrets the abortion of Bush's love child and decries the teaching of evolution and global warming.

Cheers

This is one of the rare instances where I like Bush's "down home" style of diplomacy.
Personally, I doubt I could say "His Holiness" with a straight face. I could only kiss a ring if I had a gun to my head.

The treatment of the pope is one place where my American democratic spirit is just incompatible with the Catholic Church. The Pope isn't a god. And there's no longer a place in the world for royalty, whether it's a king dictator in Africa, a Saudi prince, or the Pope.

The man deserves respect, but not worship. 'Sir' is perfectly appropriate.

There are a heck of a lot of Catholic voters in this country, many of whom support the Republicans now that they have managed to temper their historical WASP elitism.

I am sure the Democrats would love to welcome some of them back.

To certain degree I can understand this attitude. But when in Rome. . .

Anyway, I would disagree that calling him "His Holiness" is the same as worship.

The title of "his" or some cases "her holiness" is not reserved for Catholics. The Dali Lama, eastern patriarchs among other religious figures are referred to by the title. In diplomatic terms it a recognition that these individuals are considered spiritual leaders.

As far as your objection to royalty is concerned, most of our honorifics descend from respect demanded by aristocrats. To be sure they have lost some of their noble sheen. Still, sir comes from Sire. Mr. from mister or master. Even gentleman comes from the notions of gentry. There are others.

Cheers

BTW in case your curious, Catholics worship God alone. Saints are venerated. I believe the terms it uses come from Latin via Greek: latria which is reverence or worship given to God alone. Dulia refers to a kind of veneration for saints. Even Mary is not worship though her veneration for Catholics exceeds that of other saints. Hyperdulia is a term sometimes used in reference to Mary.

When I met Prince Charles I called him "your highness" even though I think the monarchy is an anachronism. The Pope is the head of the Vatican, a sovereign state. It was Bush's place to use proper etiquette. I for one am embarrassed, my opinion of religion or the Pope notwithstanding. It's one thing to post shit on a blog. This was just gauche.

Summed up,

'Dipshit meets hitler youth'

Grendel
The Dali Lama would be a head of state if the Chinese hadn't thrown him out. The Pope is a head of state. Bush was at The Vatican. One can argue he blew it on diplomatic grounds alone.

Zat,

Yes, I agree. He should have known the protocols--as antiquated and archaic they may seem -- even if he was feeling under the weather.

It was most likely simply a very minor awkward moment in a long line of Bush's major diplomatic awkward moments--winking at the queen and rubbing the shoulders of German Chancellor Merkel at G-8 Summit come to mind.

Cheers

"winking at the queen"

Having held my own with her son, I'm underwhelmed.

And W's from Connecticut, dammit.
LBJ was embarrassing enough.

We KNOW he rigged the '47 election.

Sorry, as much as I despise Bush, this does NOT qualify as a gaffe.

If Bush is not a catholic (which he isn't) then why would he call him "His Holiness". I understand protocol but the pope is not a govt official. Sir works fine.

"the pope is not a govt official."

You're joking, right? He is the government. He's the absolute monarch of the country of Vatican City. You can't get much more government than that.

Vatican City the smallest COUNTRY on the planet.

Larry

"Vatican City the smallest COUNTRY on the planet."

Therefore...the most powerful per square mile?

Oops...square kilometer.

When I met Prince Charles I called him "your highness"

And that was not "correct" either, Zatoichi.

If you are going to do that, the term is "Your Royal Highness" and then, after one of those, "Sir"

As with the Queen: "Your Majesty" and subsequently, "Ma-am"

If you really care.

"And that was not "correct" either, Zatoichi."

That's exactly what the Prince's handlers told me to call him. Sorry.

Former colonials omit the "Royal".
I'm not a "subject".

""I am sure the Democrats would love to welcome some of them back.""

Actually, a lot of them are coming back. The Republican party is losing membership probably due to Bush but also corporatism.

Good god Danni. The Corps are the Govt. Think "Green". Who runs the landfills Danni, and under whose rules are they run?

Corportations and Govt. = Same thing....

Then times have changed, Zatoichi. I apologize.

I have not set foot in that "kingdom" in many years. In my time, if you missed the "Royal" in addressing Princess Margaret you'd be snubbed for the rest of the evening.

bush = frat rat

""I am sure the Democrats would love to welcome some of them back.""

I believe that the democrats lost a great deal of their lower and middle class base when they tied their future with extremely liberal moral values that were contrary or in opposition to mainstream religious moral values.

Many lower to middle class americans were then asked to choose between their political values and their moral and ethical concerns that are based on their religious beliefs. Many chose what they considered more important--their moral spiritual values. Those who did were ripe for the picking by republicans. How else could you get a lower to middle class blue collar union worker to vote for a big business political party such as republican?

The deomcratic party tied its future to such causes as abortion, gay rights and other issues such as school prayer or the elimination of any religious images, symbols or ideas in the public sector. Again republicans took advantage of this and painted the democrats as out to destroy their core beliefs and values. The strategy has been very effective for them.

Personally, I think the country wants a presidential candidate who holds democratic values in regard to social issues such as poverty, the environment, health and education and foreign affairs but has slightly conservative to moderate beliefs on such issues as reproductive issues, homosexual rights and crime.

Cheers

Fuck the pope. This is from someone raised catholic. The church can suck my balls.

It's built on the blood of many millions and now only exists to protect it's wealth and power.

Nothing but a bunch of kid touching pedophiles and closeted gay men who have a tremendous fear of women.

I smile EVERY TIME I hear that the churches numbers are dwindling and the number of kid fuckers....I mean priests entering the seminary is as well. It's only a matter of time.

Well then, using your logic, Kim Jong Il should always be referred to as "The Supreme Being" as he likes to be called. Just because someone calls themselves something, doesn't mean we have to recognize it.

Besides, how holy can a man be who tried to conceal and deny claims of pedophilia. Let's not forget his little stint in Hitlers summer camp!

Holy? Holy Shit!

Let's not forget his little stint in Hitlers summer camp!

Too bad he wasn't prepared to stand up and be slaughtered along with his family at the age of 12.

I am not a fan of this pope, but this Nazi bit is specious.

As a German youth, he had no choice.

That being said, I prefer my suits, shoes and popes Italian.

They have more style.

Kim Jong Il should always be referred to as "The Supreme Being"

Kim's government is an outcast in the western world.

We haven't quite gotten there with the Vatican, yet.

If Bush believes in God and if the Pope is supposedly in direct contact with the big dude up on high don't you think that The President (who's job it is to interface with other World Leaders) would take the time to address this leader and speaker for God properly? These "events" are really revealing.

1) It shows the intelligence level and concern of our own Dear Leader (sick or not it is really not hard to learn how to address the Pope if you cared).

2) It reveals the BIG LIE... Bush is not religious and does NOT believe in Jebus or God or the Pope and it is all a means to an end. Power to the powerful and control of the Sheeples.

The Emperor HAS NO Clothes!

Having said that I wouldn't have said "Your Holiness" either but then again I am not President and I don't have to pretend to believe in the horsehit the churches shovel out to the Sheeples anyway.

Bush Commits Holy Gaffe

shouldn't this headline be plural?

"...but has slightly conservative to moderate beliefs on such issues as...homosexual rights....'

Gays haven't asked for anything more than equal rights. That shouldn't be a Dem-Rep, Left-Right issue; that's basic human rights.

"Yes, Sir" is a common Texas colloquialism. It comes out of the average Texans' mouth without much thought, which certainly applies to 'Sir' Bush. Usually it sounds more like a rapid-fire 'yessir.'

I think the error can be placed equally on Bush's handlers not informing him of the importance, and his obvious utter incompetence.

apparently I have a problem spelling horseshit today... but no problem recognizing it!

I think the error can be placed equally on Bush's handlers not informing him of the importance, and his obvious utter incompetence.

I just laughed at this.

Apparent Bush wishing to see the Pope was a handler problem when it is his faith that did the push.

B..B..B..Benny and the Jet...........................
