Once we return to the pre 1967 borders, one area of venomous contention and a Palestinian state is created perhaps then Israel will be looked upon as trying to do something to resolve the tensions there, rather than as the aggressors.

This could be a real turning point. Assad of Syria (and his beautiful and compassionate wife( is a new generation of Arab leader educated in the west (like his wife). Perhaps he sees a better future for the Middle East if these issues can be resolved i.e. Israel vis a vis Arabs in their neighborhood.

Right now Olmert is facing a very hostile political situation, and trying to get this peace treaty with Syria, could be considered the act of a desperate man to get some sort of political windfall.

Israel Offers Golan Heights (Back) to Syria. I guess Hezbollah and Bush's Iraq quagmire have scared Omlet a bit.

Syria could have had the Golan Heights back LONG ago if they had agreed to sign a treaty with Israel like Egypt and Jordan did. They have never done it.

Before June of 1967, The West Bank was part of Jordan, the Gaza strip was part of Egypt, and Syria owned the Golan Heights. Consequently, the occupants of the West Bank were Jordanians, and the occupants of Gaza were Egyptians. There were no "Palestinians" per se. Hell, even Arafat was an Egyptian. After the war, Israel ended up holding the Sinai Peninsula with its oil and Gaza. Israel also occupied the West Bank and the Golan Heights. Egypt finally signed a treaty and Israel returned the Sinai with its oil and would have returned Gaza but Egypt didn't want Gaza and the troublesome "Palestinians." Smart move, they left Israel to deal with those peace-loving people. Same with Jordan, they signed a treaty but told Israel to keep the West Bank and ITS peace-loving "Palestinians." Syria has yet to negotiate a treaty with Israel and Israel keeps the Golan Heights for defensive purposes. Since all that, Israel has turned over about 97% of the West Bank and ALL of Gaza to the "Palestinians." I don't see as how they can achieve any peace by returning the remaining 3% of the West Bank OR the Golan Heights. I think the peace-loving "Palestinians and Hamas meant it when they said their goal is to destroy Israel.

The Palestinian people are fed up with the mini civil war going on in Gaza. So much so, they were glad Israel stated bombing again because it took the gunmen off the streets as they went to hide during the air-raids. Not only that, but since the Palestinian people are so fed up with the violence happening in house, they are now hoping Israel or Jordon would take over the land to restore order.

You know GZ I do get sick and tired of your posts and rants regarding Israel, but I actually agree with you on this and have felt that way for a very long time. I just have issue with the presumption that we are suppose to fight Israel's fight. Arab countries particularly Syria and Iran want Israel gone. Iran just happens to be the only one bold enough to say it.

I agree Israel needs to fight it's own wars. I am tired of us being Israel's Army by proxy.
