The National Archives on Thursday unveiled a handwritten note by Abraham Lincoln exhorting his generals to pursue Robert E. Lee's army after the battle of Gettysburg, underscoring one of the great missed opportunities for an early end to the Civil War.

On the other side of the memo is Lincoln's statement that the CSA General is demoralized by the reaction of northerners to the Confederate Army. He had been told by Vice President Stephens that the would be "greeted as liberators."

It read:

"But I don't want to go to the theater tonight Mary. Can't we wait until it comes out on video?"

It read:

Lee was the shit, I have to admit that. But my all-time favorite rebel was J.E.B. Stuart.

Was Lee "crushable" post Gettysburg?

Could the Southern forces been defeated before they crossed the Potomac?

Did the War between States have to continue for another two excruciating years?

All highly debatable questions that Spud has no particular insight into.

Spud is more interested in this stories "Wow" moment.

Must have been cool fer this archivist fella to be going through some war records and have a hand written letter by Lincoln just pop out like that.

The fact that the contents of the document were previously known and largely already believed does not in any way diminish the cool factor of that moment thinks Spud.

Lincoln was a bright guy.

The war of Northern agression.

The note was a comparison of which young guys legs were best shaped.

The South started the war by firing on and invading Union territoty---Ft Sumter.

If the war had ended in 1863, another one would have started in 1864.

There was no way the US would have let the CSA have one square foot of the West - where the South never really fared well at all militarily.

The Fugitive Slave Act would have been negated, so every slave in the South would be trying to escape North or West.

The South's dependence on Cotton as it's ONLY export would have made it a slave to Northern and European mills - especially with Egyptian cotton plantations now in competition.

Planters were sucking up to the British aristocracy at exactly the point that the power was shifting to the middle class capitalists - who had a lot more in common with Northern capitalists. European workers sympathised with the abolitionists.

The weak Confederate structure of the government would have promoted a "divide and conquer" economic strategy, and the US and the UK would have eaten their lunch, one by one.

The US was only going to get stronger from that point, and the CSA had nothing more to offer. And they would have made an enemy of the US - and you all know how we can hold a grudge.

Losing was the best thing that ever happened to the South. Not to mention it lets them whine about Northern agression for the rest of their lives.
