"If Thomas were to die or resign, Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, would appoint a successor from one of three finalists chosen by the state Republican party.'

Where did THAT prodedure come from? herm

Lousy way to go, for sure. This is something nobody should wish on his worst enemy.
That said, methinks Thomas should step down as Senator. He can't possibly represent the State of Wyoming as it deserves to be, when he's suffering from terminal cancer.
I wish him the best in whatever he does, though, as well as a speedy recovery, as unlikely as that seems.

Yeah, I'm asking the same question. I thought the governor of a state can appoint anyone he wants to an open senate seat.

I wish the man well and hope he has some chance of recovery.

That being said, I wonder how much the senator and his family wish that the arrogant fool Bush had allowed stem cell research back in 2006 when the senator was first diagnosed. Who knows what cures the medical and science world could have come up with -- including for leukemia -- if they had had the FULL backing of the U.S. government and its research grants.

That being said, I wonder how much the senator and his family wish that the arrogant fool Bush had allowed stem cell research back in 2006 when the senator was first diagnosed.

You are so full of crap its coming out of your ears... you know nothing of Stem Cells. If Bush had allowed embryonic stem cell research in 2006, he still would be dying of Leukemia today...

People like you should be ashamed of yourselves... you make all these false claims about stem cell research, about all the stuff it could cure, even though you really don't know... and you do so for vote...

You should be ashamed of yourself but I'm betting you're not...

Oh and before you jump on me about stem cell research, I support Embryonic stem cell research, but I think you people need to be honest about where we are with it, and how far away we are from actual medical treatments. It will probably be able to cure a lot of things, but any time a Republican gets sick with anything from Cancer to Pink Eye you libs come out screaming "if we had Stem Cells you'd be cured now," and its complete and utter bullshit.

Fuck, Leukemia. What a bitch, I wish him and his family well. You know they feel like they just got run over by a bus. Things seem a little unreal, they always do when you get a blindside from Ma Nature. Just because it was expected doesn't make it easier.

I wish them well.

I'm with CHRIS on this one. Even if stem cell research wasn't advanced enough to help cancer victims like Craig Thomas, at least the effort could have been underway long ago . . . except for the narrow mindedness of our current Narcissist in Chief who doesn't have a thought in his head for anybody but himself.

herm

I actually think thats more fair

if the peeps elected a republican than it would make no sense for a gov. to replace him with a democrat and vice verse

Rob: What if Reagan had allowed Stem Cell research in 1986?

He rejected it. The irony is, that after his death, Nancy is promoting stem cell research.

The only thing stopping it is the hysterical reaction from the Xians who equate it with "murder." Really? So Mr. FundaMENTAList, when does the fetus, or zygote become ensoulded? At the moment of contraception? Let me know when you believe ensoulment takes place.

Even if stem cell research wasn't advanced enough to help cancer victims like Craig Thomas, at least the effort could have been underway long ago

That's fine, but I can't stand it when people act like all disease would have been cured by now if only Bush would have funded them a little more. Its just not true...

Rob: What if Reagan had allowed Stem Cell research in 1986?

Embryonic Stem Cell research...

And Reagan's situation is just another example of people exploiting a terrible illness to drive forward a political agenda... Nobody has shown any real evidence that Embryonic Stem cells can cure alzheimers... hell they barely even know what alzheimers is... there is potential for these cells to cure diseases but we are really far away from any clinical treatments...

Why didn't Clinton pass funding for their research in the 90s?

Sourse?

None of course.....

Mr. FundaMENTAList, when does the fetus, or zygote become ensoulded?

I believe life begins at conception, but I know that there are thousands if not millions of cells out there frozen that will never develop and I'm guessing will just be thrown away... If some good can come from it instead of being trashed then I think we should use them.

that was clever how you put Mental in there and called me a fundamentalist, when I said I support embryonic stem cell research... yeah cuz that's what fundamentalists believe...

Sorry Rob, it is true, they have the technology, all they need is the OK to go and the access to more, viable stem cells and they will be able to cure a shitload of diseases and pretty much elimate the need for organ transplants.

No more paraplegics, no need for liver transplants, heart transplants, who knows, maybe with enough research they could find away to use stem cells on bone and you could grow yourself ane hip or knee.

The possiblities are endless! Where is your imagination? Where is your drive? Your attitude is not the kind that put us on the moon in July 1969 ( I wantched it as a 9 yr. old )

This usee to be the greatest Contry on Earth, and then, somehow, the religous extremists took over and now we are a laughing stock. Nobody takes us seriously anymore.

Rob:I give you alot of latitide because you're really too young to remember what America used to be like, I wish there was a way I could convey it to you, but you're still in your late 20's which means you were born in the late 70's early 80's and you can't possible remember what it was like prior to Reagan etc.

I mean shit, we thought Nixon was bad, but with Dubya you guys have made Nixon look like the greatest President we've ever had.

Rob: What about twins? Is one of them born without a soul?

No more paraplegics, no need for liver transplants, heart transplants, who knows, maybe with enough research they could find away to use stem cells on bone and you could grow yourself ane hip or knee.

MAYBE!!! All of it is maybe... Dude, my wife just spent the past year working on mesenchymal stem cells and she never shuts her yap about this shit... yes there is tons of potential, its really exciting stuff... but to claim all disease will be cured is assinine...

Are you a scientist in the field of Embryonic Stem Cells, or did you just watch the Michael J. Fox commercials?

And you act like its just Embryonic Stem Cells that have the potential... not even close. There are adult stem cells, placental stem cells... they all have great potential.

But like the 6 Billion humans you claim to care so deeply for, your care for stem cells is just as much bullshit...

Oh and America still is the greatest nation by far.

ROB

I can't stand it when people act like all disease would have been cured . . .

Slow down Quick Draw. All Chris said was "I wonder . . "

An implication perhaps, but not a flat out statement about a cure-all for every disease on the planet.

Rob: What about twins? Is one of them born without a soul?

yes... one is born without a soul briwo... douchebag...

I guess I should add on there I hate the implication that it will do that also... but look at Briwos post... no more wheelchairs, no more cancer, hell we can even grow extra hips by just slathering a goop of stem cells on our skin...

Its giving false hope to the sick to trick them into voting for the DNC... its fucked up.

Are you a scientist in the field of Embryonic Stem Cells, or did you just watch the Michael J. Fox commercials?

I ahve never seen a Michael J Fox commercial, well maybe once.
And I don't need to have an M.D. to be able to read and understand science, I have BS in Science and eventually I willget my Masters, even if I'm 75. But the point is I can still read scientific and medical articles and UNDERSTAND what they're saying. And it ISN'T 'Maybe", it's YES!! IF we could start doing research. C'Mon Rob, America is the greatest Country on Earth, LET"S TAKE THE GLOVES AND SHAKLES OFF AND GET TO WORK!

yes... one is born without a soul briwo... douchebag...

Original insult.... but please answer my question.

IF we could start doing research

I wonder what my wife has been doing all year... bitch been lying about doing stem cell research all year... hmmm....

And it ISN'T 'Maybe", it's YES!!

No it isn't... there is potential and there is a lot of hope... but it is not for certain, not by a long shot...

Actually Rob - here's something that's more interesting in that vein:

What about chimera recombination? Some twins actually recombine into a single fetus, and the resultant person carries chromosomes from both. One soul?

Lest you think this is something made up:

When does life begin? Most people seem to have an opinion on the issue. After all, "When does life begin?" seems like a reasonable thing to ask. We see personhood as an all-or-nothing thing -- something either is a person or it isn't. If there are no degrees of personhood, there should be a clear moment when a new individual comes into existence, a thunderclap announcing a new life -- "ensoulment," if you will.

but please answer my question.

You're question is idiotic... how the fuck would I know, I'm not God, nor am I in communcation with him...

I believe everyone has a soul even twins...

Actually I don't remember discussing the mode of delivery, onlt the possiblitites that a majority of people in the filed have talked about.

Somehow Rob twists that into everyone smearing some cream on themselves to cure diseases, I ask you, read my post and please tell me if Rob is accurate. I leve it to my fellow Retorters.

Sorry, can't type baked

Well, they just announced that he died, so it seems it's a moot point.

No! That is so sad. My heart goes out to his family.

"Its giving false hope to the sick to trick them into voting for the DNC... its fucked up."

'False hope'?

Granted the DNC try to over-state the case at times but stem cell research is a very real hope.

'False Hope' belongs on the other side of the aisle along with the faith healers and snake handlers with the Pat Buchanon and Peter Popoff and Benny Hinn clones.

The left are more reality oriented.

Also more moral come to think on it.

Be Well.

Rob would rather smash hope in those that need it.

Your attitude is not the kind that put us on the moon in July 1969 ( I wantched it as a 9 yr. old )

Lucky. I was too young to catch Halley's comet in '86, too. Oh well, if I'm still alive in 2062 I'll be sure not to miss it. It will be a good 80th birthday present.

OK, that was a respectful pause.

Now, what's the Wyoming Republican party like? Any chance there might be one moderate in their 3-man lineup?

And before anyone jumps on me for getting all political, I can guarantee Holy Joe Lieberman is asking the same question.

Well, they just announced that he died, so it seems it's a moot point.

The wheel in the sky keeps on turning.

This is the best chance for Joe Lieberman to step up and . . . wait, he's not from Wyoming, is he? Never mind.

Evidently earlier than you propose.

"39 Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah, 40 and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. Luke 1:39-44"

Apparently, I came in late to this one.

I've seen what leukemia can do to a person. As sad as I am for what the late senator had to go through, I am, perhaps, more saddened by the fact that his family and friends had to watch his sufferring helplessly. He is, at least, at peace now. I mourn for those who will have to remember him as he was in those last few months.

That being said, I wonder how much the senator and his family wish that the arrogant fool Bush had allowed stem cell research back in 2006 when the senator was first diagnosed.
Only an ignorant and arrogant fool would make this claim. Bush has not prevented ANY stem cell research. He prevented federal funds from being used.

If only Johnny Edwards was VP and then he could have healed the senator, just like Christopher Reeves would have been healed.

Damn, dead 6 months after diagnosis. That sucks.

I mourn for those who will have to remember him as he was in those last few months.

When my dad died of colon cancer, I begged my mother to make the funeral closed-casket.

I didn't want the last image of my father to be him dead in a box.

Unfortunately, Catholics like open casket funerals, so I had no choice. The way they treat the dead is appalling.

How long was this guy in Washington and what did he do, except pick up a paycheck?

That's ripe. A person who admits to drinking so much alcohol that he passes out in the middle of a party at a friend's house calls someone who smokes pot a "junkie."

passes out in the middle of a party at a friend's house

You forgot the part about tea-bagging.

Oh yeah, good catch Ness. Should read: "Someone who gets so drunk he passes out in the middle of a party at a friend's house, and wakes up to the sight and smell of a skin chandelier rubbing over his face, calls someone who smokes pot a "junkie." That's REALLY ripe."

Rob: from your earlier post in response to the question 'when does a fetus become "ensouled?,"' you say "I believe life begins at conception.." but the question is not when LIFE begins but when does a SOUL come into existence. Dogs, cats, fish, trees, bacteria and Rupert Murdoch are forms of life but do they have souls?

GregoryBrian... Why do you ask me for definitive answers as to the creation of a soul, or whether they are exclusive to Humans... I don't have answers, I have my beliefs and my ideas. Go find your own.

Weren't we talking about college when that came up?

I love it when people just want to say what they wanted to without actually reading what I said... in this case byrdman wanted to insult christianity, and saw a poster no in lock step with DNC talking points about this miracle cure and figured he must be an evangelical totally opposed to stem cell research... sorry dumbass... I support stem cell research in every form... I just would like for liberals to be honest about its potential, and I would especially like them to be honest about how long it will take to develop actual treatments.

Well, in all fairness, I may be combining two incidents - one where you were tea-bagged in college, the other where you passed out at your friend's party in the past 6 months or so. But you were drunk both times, so...!

(By the way, Colin Cowherd says paulie Walnuts is going to whack Tony. You agree?)

Here... there is potential for embryonic stem cells to cure AMD, a disorder causing blindness in the elderly but its 5 years away at best...

Colin Cowherd?

I heard an interview with Frank Vincent (Phil Leotardo) that there are 3 endings and that only the creators know which ending it is...

However that is an interesting premise, he kills Tony and takes over Jersey... he's always had kind of a jealousy of Tony's wealth and power.

I'm annoyed they aren't bringing the Russian back... Truth was right... its bullshit.

Colin Cowherd is an ESPN radio guy I sometimes listen to on the way to work. He's out of Las Vegas, I think.

I'm a junkie? Because I smoke pot on the weeknds or after work?

Do you ever have a drink after work Mr. Holierthanthou?

Rob: I'm just asking your opinion, not asking you to install one into me. There's no need to be a jackass about it. I just think it's important to ask the uncomfortable questions, especially when one's life, liberty and pursuit of happiness enter into it.

Does LIFE = SOUL? If you say you BELIEVE a soul enters the fetus the moment of conception, that is YOUR belief but may not be the belief of someone else, particularly if it's a woman who's fertile. Therefore, can anyone tell me how some "pro-lifers" have the chutzpah to demand laws be enacted that say their BELIEF and that of their PAC is superior to another's BELIEF who disagrees?

If one is "pro-life," one has to push for a ban on hunting for sports. It is not necessary and is cruel to animals. Forget the argument that hunters have to kill animals to prevent their overpopulation. Killing is killing. If one excuses it though, one has to excuse abortions of convenience or to "thin the herd" of poor children.

As Laibach said: "Life! Life is Life!"

Plus Rob needs to remember that for at least 48 hrs after fertilization, the DNA hasn't sorted itself out yet, so there is no "being" for the sould to enter.

Plus Rob hasn't answered my question about twins.

Plus Rob hasn't answered my question about twins.

Yes I did... I've answered all the questions... I don't know, I'm not God, I believe human life begins at conception, and all humans have a soul.

Rob: what informs your belief that an immediately-created pre-fetus cell has a soul? It doesn't seem to be the Bible because people who believe the Bible DO talk to God (i.e. praying) which you say you don't do.

The question that is interesting here is what will happen to his seat? There is nothing being mentioned yet about that except at the top of the thread some speculation. I have no idea how to find out how they do things in the vast weird empty Wyoming, but as far as I remember the governor has been able to appoint whoever he wants to fill the empty seat in other states.

Grumpy,

Wyoming Republicans nominate a small slate of Repubican possibilities, and the Democratic Governor picks one. The new Senator will be a Republican.

"what will happen to his seat?"

Isn't this the state where the Republicans field three candidates and the Governor picks one of them or is Spud thinking of another state?

Be Well.

Well, that sucks. Why should it be that way? The guy who died was a Republican, sure, but he was elected. Just because he happened to win, why should that automatically require someone from his party to be nominated? The people who elected Senator Thomas were not necessarily voting for him specifically because of his political party, probably they voted for him personally because of who he was. Therefore it is undemocratic and unrepresentative for only some Republicans to have the privilege of nominating candidates for the empty seat.

Info from www.tailrank.com:

Wyoming Law on Appointment of Senators

Recently re-elected Senator Craig Thomas has died.

Here, for the ghoulishly curious, is the relevant part W.S. 22-18-111, the relevant Wyoming law on how a vacant Senate seat gets filled:

(i) If a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator or in any state office other than the office of justice of the supreme court and the office of district court judge, the governor shall immediately notify in writing the chairman of the state central committee of the political party which the last incumbent represented at the time of his election under W.S. 22-6-120(a)(vii), or at the time of his appointment if not elected to office.

The chairman shall call a meeting of the state central committee to be held not later than fifteen (15) days after he receives notice of the vacancy. At the meeting the state central committee shall select and transmit to the governor the names of three (3) persons qualified to fill the vacancy. Within five (5) days after receiving these three (3) names, the governor shall fill the vacancy by temporary appointment of one (1) of the three (3) to hold the office.

So the state GOP proposes three names, the (Democratic) Governor picks one.

However, if I read the following correctly, the appointed Senator serves only until a special election (held at the next general election) to determine who will fill out the rest of the term:

Any vacancy in any other elective office in the state except representative in congress or the board of trustees of a school or community college district, shall be filled by the governing body, or as otherwise provided in this section, by appointment of a temporary successor to serve until a successor for the remainder of the unexpired term is elected at the next general election and takes office on the first Monday of the following January.

Congressional representatives have their own statute. I presume the next general election is November 2008, but invite correction if there is one earlier.

Rob: what informs your belief that an immediately-created pre-fetus cell has a soul? It doesn't seem to be the Bible because people who believe the Bible DO talk to God (i.e. praying) which you say you don't do.

I know this thread is not on the front page anymore but maybe you'll check back...

I don't like the tone and direction you're taking in attacking my faith, so I'm going to call you douche...

Well douche... what I believe is what I believe... I believe every human has a soul, and after listen to my son's or daughter's heartbeat today, I know in my heart that he or she is alive, and therefore has a soul. Is that good enough for you douche? That's where my belief comes from douche.

Oh and yes douche, I pray... But when I said I don't talk to God I mean I'm not having a back and forth question and answer style conversation where I can ask Him your stupid questions...

Well, that sucks. Why should it be that way?

I'm a little disgusted at the disappointment some of the liberals are showing here that they wouldn't get to take this seat because the governmor is a Democrat... It takes a lot to disgust me but the first thought you libs had when hearing a US senator died is "How will this increase our seat count?" is really quite disturbing...

Wow...

"It takes a lot to disgust me but the first thought you libs had when hearing a US senator died is "How will this increase our seat count?" is really quite disturbing..."

I take it you've recovered from your disgust from when the Republicans did the same thing with the stricken Dem politician last November.

Oh let me guess... Independent right?

Evening, Rob.

I believe every human has a soul, and after listen to my son's or daughter's heartbeat today, I know in my heart that he or she is alive, and therefore has a soul.

When my first was at about 8 months (he's 6 now) as I was falling asleep I heard him go into a coughing fit THROUGH the womb!!

No shit! I actually heard the little bugger coughing! I felt very close to him at that point.

I don't know whether or not you are planning on learning the gender in advance. Fortunately, we DID want to know. The reason I say "fortunately" is because during the ultrasound the nurse (after getting flush in the face) blurted out, "Whoa!! This one's going to be a porn star!!"

We had to buy diapers one size too large just to accomodate his girth. A chip off the old block I guess.

"Oh let me guess... Independent right?"

Lifelong. From my first registration to this day.

Voted straight Dem for the second time in my life last November, the first was the Clinton impeachment bullshit.

Before that, probably more R's than D's, as my alignment has been fairly close to my moniker, Jack Danforth. But the R's I used to vote for have been replaced by warmongering spendthrifts who want to lay down with religious wackos and permanently codifty one group of Americans as second-class citizens. My vote has been more against the R's than for the D's, and the jagoff team of Pelosi and Reid leave me cold. Personally, I'm hoping for Bloomberg/Hagel '08.

But let me ask...when the R's were doing it to the D's last November, were you just as disgusted, or do you reserve your disgust for those with a (D) after their name?

Hey Jeff! That's really cool about the coughing, I'll have to listen for that.

We are going to find out the sex, should be able to in about a month I think... not gonna have the same experience as you though... all my boy (if its a boy) is going to inherit from me is disappointed looks from his sexual partners...

:(

No, it is not fair for Wyoming law to enshrine party affiliation to that degree. Most voters don't really care about a candidate's party that much, and especially in these states with a very small population it is not the party but the person that is important. What if the senator who died had been a member of one party when he was elected many years ago and there had been a big change in the voting pattern of that state in the meantime? Then with this law the governor is forced to choose candidates from a party which at that point is highly in the minority? That would not be representing the state or the people very well at all. What if he was in some third party? This is a very stupid law.

I'm very disappointed in you Rob. Rather than respond like an adult to my question, you say I am attacking you and proceed to call me "douche." You sound extremely threatened. I hope you find more solid foundation for your faith, so much that you can respond to questions without resorting to childish retorts.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, I've never met an athiest who wasn't a dick...

I'd rather call you a douche...

That's that Christian attitude that Christians who don't know shit about Jesus and his teachings use. It is sheer hypocrisy. They pay lip service to Jesus and the teachings of Christianity---than act like assholes to the rest of the world because they "know" Jesus loves them and will take them to Heaven. Like Jesus would want an asswipe like that around for all eternity.

"I've said it before, I'll say it again, I've never met an athiest who wasn't a dick..."

Of course, if I were to say that about Christians, I'd be called a "hater" and a "bigot". But I wouldn't say that about Christians, because it isn't true, anymore than it's true about atheists.

Bill Oreilly

How do you know it isn't true---have you met all the Christians I've met?

Bill Oreilly

My mistake--I thought you were responding to my post. I'm just too eager to argue with you again;-). At least you are a challenge.

I know a lot of Christians, Bob, who aren't "dicks".

Robtheahole

That you don't see the discrepency in your statements---shows my statement to still hold true.

How do you know I'm an atheist, liberal or anything else Rob? Have I called you a name or labeled you in any way? I'm simply asking questions and you try to dismiss them by calling them "stupid." If your faith cannot withstand questions without your need to lash out with unChristianlike behavior such as profanity, insults, judgment, etc. as you have done on this discussion group, I'd say it's pretty shaky. Aoout 2,000 years ago, one guy got nailed to a cross for asking difficult questions. I'd be willing to bet you'd probably have been one to help convict him of heresy had you lived back then with the attitude you're displaying here.

BTW: since Merriam-Webster defines "douche" as something that cleanses, I take your intended insult as a compliment.

Cheers!

I don't.

Aoout 2,000 years ago, one guy got nailed to a cross for asking difficult questions.

You're not asking difficult questions... you're trying to ask questions that if I answered could open up the door to your silly attacks...

You asked me for a definitive answer about when a soul is created, how the fuck could I give you a definitve answer? I am not God. I can tell you what I feel and what I believe...

And I can state even further that you are a douche because you compared yourself to Jesus Christ on an internet message board... get over yourself.

You're an intellectual
coward
Rob.
There.
I've called you a name.
Happy?

Yours Truly,

Douche

PS: I'll let you have the last word because I'm probably not checking back here anyway.
