Reason Online: In 15 square miles of abandoned land, about 400 misfits-aging hippies, disillusioned veterans, teenage runaways-have built a community where no one cares if you smoke pot, fire your rifle all day, let your kids drive your car, or walk around naked in the desert heat. It's a landscape of beat-up old trailers, shacks jerry-rigged from recycled materials, solar panels, little farms, greenhouses, and at least one tipi. "Where I live is the last remaining land of America that is left," says Dreadie Jeff, another Mesa resident. "You can do what you fucking want there."

'Dreadie Jeff, a veteran of the first Gulf War, exclaims that his military oath was not "to defend this land, it's not to defend the people, it's not to defend the motherfucking asshole president of the United States. My military oath goes, 'I solemnly swear to defend the Constitution of the United States of America from all enemies, foreign and domestic.'"'

The guy may be a little crazy but I bet he always pays attention to exactly what he's doing before taking an oath or signing his name to something. And that makes him a bit more sensible than most in at least one regard.

..."we don't dial 911," says one, "we dial .357"...

Fuller quote there...

The desert residents may approve of vigilantism in principle--"we don't dial 911," says one, "we dial .357"--but they prefered to address the conflict by sending a delegation of unarmed women to reason with the runaways. The Nowhere Kids backed down, and so far the peace has held

Anarchy is life without purpose.

The disaffection these folk have for society is just an extreme example of how badly the bonds of society are breaking down.

One of these neo-hippies, a gulf war vet expressed that they felt that the biggest enemy to the Constitution is the men currently in power.

He's right.

Be Well.

When is Ray moving there?

I wouldn't suggest it's anarchy in charge.... more like self-government in an otherwise ever restricting political landscape.

Wonder when Janet Reno will send in the gaurd?

Some of you Tighty-Righties might think about what that guy said when your hero goes spouting about how his #1 job is to provide security. His oath of office doesn't mention protecting life or borders either:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Wonder when Janet Reno will send in the gaurd?

Probably after someone invents a time machine and sends us all back to 1993.

Clearly he's never been to the hick towns in North and South Carolina. Had he, there would be a lot more room for him. Same areas that hid the abortion bomber and Olympic Bomber in Atlanta from the FBI for about 3 years

Wonder when Janet Reno will send in the gaurd?

If they start raping children and shooting ATF agents, do you think anyone here is going to defend them?

Why do you continue to support batshit crazy religious extremist criminals who declared the US government their enemy, and attacked government officers serving a legal warant?

'Cause Clinton was President.

I don't know, Spud. Could it be a result of that ol' "if it feels good, do it" and the "do your own thing" wave that began in the '60's? Same ol' thing to me. You know, the "tune in, drop out, turn on" weenies.

"One of these neo-hippies, a gulf war vet expressed that they felt that the biggest enemy to the Constitution is the men currently in power.

Oh, yeah, they ALL like to blame it on whatever administration was in power. Are we then justified in blaming the turmoil in the '60's on the Johnson administration? I KNOW you'd rather blame it on the Nixon administration, but c'mon, he didn't take office until '69. IMO, lotta damage done to the Constitution over the years by lotsa different administrations AND judges.

Are we then justified in blaming the turmoil in the '60's on the Johnson administration?

My father does, and he's a Democrat. He hates Johnson more than most of us hate Bush. Can't even listen to the sound of his voice.

Are you saying that Johnson DIDN'T handle things badly in the 60's? Vietnam and the projects were two of this nation's biggest fuckups of all time.

Probably right after they gun down federal agents with machine guns as they try serving a warrant for weapons and explosives violations.

You always do seem to forget that little piece of it.

"Vietnam and Iraq are) two of this nation's biggest fuckups of all time."

Without a doubt, two of ANY nation's!!! But Alexander the Great, Attilla the Hun, Napoleon and Hitler were a little more honest about what they were doing.

We can properly lay Vietnam on LBJ, although it started in Ike's time and Nixon perpetuated it. The trouble today is that no one learned from Vietnam . herm

Yea Right,

Until Reason & RCADE blew their cover! Soon the DHS will descend.
