Newsweek: The Senate and House Intelligence Committees are asking former attorney general John Ashcroft to testify about a March 2004 hospital-room confrontation during which he refused to sign off on a continuation of President Bush’s warrantless eavesdropping program, according to congressional and administration sources.

I'm lovin it. Let the lies and lack of recollections begin. Does anyone really expect that rightwing piece of shit to be open and honest? If so, I got some swampland you can buy.

Does anyone really expect that rightwing piece of shit to be open and honest?

Hard to tell with this guy.

Given the way the wind is blowing he may feel that being open and honest gets him a good fuzzy from the people who hated him.

Don't discount the idea that people can do good. He proved something by saying NO already.

If you treat someone like a dog long enough they will eventually turn on you. He may not have the best motives but we may get the whole truth from Mr. Ashcroft.

Right hand raised, and under oath, I think Ashcroft will tell the unvarnished truth about this incident.

His legacy is at stake. If there's one thing Bush people want, it's to not go down in history with him as liars of the first degree - if they can help it, Most won't be able to. The record overwhelmingly implicates most of them in the largers complicity of untruth we've had to endure in my lifetime. That includes Nixon.

In startling testimony May 15, Comey recounted how Alberto Gonzales, then White House counselor, and Andrew Card, then White House chief of staff, went to George Washington University Hospital on the evening of March 10, 2004, in an attempt to persuade a barely conscious Ashcroft, who had just undergone emergency surgery for gallstone pancreatitis, to sign a document recertifying what Comey called a "particular classified program." (He indicated that a just-completed internal Justice review had led him to conclude that the department could no longer certify its legality.)

The DOJ will not call the wiretaps "legal".

Worth noting.

So John has been called to the stand, eh?

A loyal Bushie still who is stalling for time before deciding whether to appear voluntarily or await a supeana.

Meanwhile a year into the investigation they are still waiting for documentation on all of this, which has yet to appear.

In fact the WH has ordered the DOJ not to produce the documents.

Also there's still no Docs from the server cleaning folk over at the other ring of this three ring circus Gonzogate.

The Middle Ring is still the Iraq war, of course.

They are still looking fer WMD over there, amongst other things.

Be Well.

Put his Right hand on the Bible he so reveres-his left hand raised in the air-and swear on his immortal soul-to tell the truth-the WHOLE truth-and NOTHING BUT the truth.

If he won't-send 'im to gitmo....

I always thought Ashcroft was a dolt. But I really admire his hospital bed gumption, standing up to Gonzales and by inference Bush. Now we know why he didn't serve in the second administraion.

If Ashcroft gave his OK, he's on the hook unless he can justify being insane or drugs were influencing his decision. In addition, the question is what was told to him before he signed off and then the question is who gave that person the information and authority to ask him. Appears it could only be the President or Rove.

Shouldn't it be against the law for council representing the white house to assail the attorney general while in intensive care, in effort to take advantage of his weakness in attempt to expliot and circumvent the constitution.

This seems like treason.

isn't it illegal to disuss national security secretes in an unsecured environment?

What I find more important about this article is that the Bush administration knew the warrentless wiretaps were illegal and lied to the American people about it.

Just add it to the list.

Ashcroft is a religious man who was encouraged, like many others in this administration, to let his religion encroach on and influence his running of the Justice Department. More than was consistent with the Constitution and more than a couple of centuries of tradition had set as a precedent. Even more than common sense would, as in his abortive TIPS program and the absurd covering up of marble breasts on a statue. He is a man of his time and that particular segment of society that grabbed power back in 2000.

Given all that it seems he took the precepts of Christianity and common decency seriously aa a basis for his professional duties. Unlike some others in this administration who wear God on their sleeve but otherwise act like barbaric pagans.

I'd say that by reminding them of THEIR duty to the constitution he acquitted himself very well when those sleazeballs Card and Gonzales descended like vultures on his sickbed to try and get him to sign off on Bush's unconstitutional behavior. I still oppose his political philosophy but I still say well done, Mr Ashcroft.

Not a waste of more taxmoney. How stupid are these democrats

Former FBI Special Agent in Charge, Ted Gunderson. His investigations into the First World Trade Center attack and the Oklahoma City bombings have led him to conclude that a secretive group inside the US government is secretly orchestrating these events.

Hey dipshit, in case you didn't notice, he disagreed with the Bush administration on the wiretapping issue. Why would he all of a sudden stick up for them on that issue just because he's a rightwinger?

Come on, Tennent, now Ashcroft? These guilty sluts are testifying through some kind of "book deal into corporate adviser" magical portal. Maybe he'll do a Disney musical or cut a track with Bacharach..

The facts appear to show that until Comey and others within the DOJ raised specific issues over the warrantless wiretapping with Ashcroft, he had been signing off on it previously. And wouldn't it be incumbent upon the highest ranking US law enforcement official to bring it to Congress' attention that the White House refused to obey the DOJ's finding regarding the illegality of the taps even when in public they were saying everything was completely legal?

It appears laws of this nation were not enforced by those charged with enforcing them. While I give Ashcroft credit for rebuffing Gonzo and Card, why hasn't he been more vocal on what he deemed to be illegal himself?

"or cut a track with Bacharach.."

You nailed it...allowing your Religion to override your common sense and to influence your oath to protect and defend the Constitution is unconscionable at best and criminal at worst.

I too was surprised to see the "Eagle Soar" above the fray on this issue...

I hope it is true! And I hope he does the "Christian thing" and tell the truth. It would change my opinion of the man and would do much to restore my "faith" in our Government.

Jesus, its amazing how many people (mostly right wingers) have their facts backwards on this story.

Mr. Comey, the acting Attorney General refused to sign off on wire tapping outside FISA, so Gonzales tried to go over his head and get Ashcroft to sign off from his hospital bed. Ashcroft also refused.
