A tropical storm bearing down on Florida formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, just in time for the official June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season.

"The Colorado State University team of experts under forecast pioneer William Gray renewed its call on Thursday for an above-average 17 storms in the 2007 hurricane season, saying nine would grow to hurricane strength"

Billy "the prognosticator" Gray is calling fer 9 fer 17.

Spud calls 8 fer 19.

We should get a pool going.

Here's another thing...

The hurrican season is six months?

A regular season is only 3 months.

Hurricane season is like two seasons back to back!

In Kansas they have root cellars fer Tornados.

Do Floridians have citrus cellars for Hurricans?

Just asking.

Be Well.

That storm needs to head up mine way...we need the rain.

Whew - at least if a hurricane develops I know Americans will be in safe hands with FEMA in charge.

Hope 'your way' is out West 'cause we've had the driest rain season in 130 years in California this past year. The West needs agua, we're drying up out here.

The Hurricanes beat the Tornadoes in Back-to-back seasons.

Who will reign in the Hall-of-Fame?

FEMA's not in charge of national emergencies anymore:

BASEBALL SIZE HAIL TO THE CHIEF

'W' is. Do you feel any better now?

Let's just hope that none of these storms is big enough to trigger this:

Check it out, all you Republicans must be so proud, and hopefull...

I live on the North Gulf Coast, and you can put me down for 0 hurricanes again this year. The water is too cold, too late in the year, in the Gulf to sustain a serious storm.

I remember going swimming last June, and it was almost too cold for me to go in. I knew then: no tropical storms here. Not like 04 and 05 at all--I was going in during February.

Not exactly scientific, I know, but I'm more often right than they are.

Very interesting RR. I think in this case, I'd put my money on you.

I remember after Three Mile Island, every trivial detail about nuclear power plants was major news for years.

Yep. And everyone became a so-called expert on nuclear power, and were terrified of the prospect of another TMI.

It didn't occur to any of those people that folks who build and work in those reactors are smarter than they are, and they took measures to ensure no radioactive leak took place. It also didn't occur to them that it was nearly 30 years ago, and we could build dozens of meltdown-proof reactors all over America and drop emissions from coal plants to about zero, with cheaper electricity besides.

Ignorance lasts forever, it seems.

BTW--did you see the track of this storm? It formed in the Gulf, shifted slightly north, then veered almost due east. Almost never happens--usually Gulf storms follow a northwesterly track. Unless . . . the storm hits a wall of colder water, then it follows the path of least resistance.

Some wind, some rain - no big deal.

I guess I'm glad it avoided alabama since I have to spend next week there training.

Ignorance lasts forever, it seems.

Thanks to all the fanatical ranting from Eco-nuts and Liberals, the U.S. is also 30 years behind in developing nuclear power technology.

I heard a guy from Westinghouse last fall who said that when they start building new plants again, they will be imported from France and China.

I love the hurricanes. I live in the northern mid-west. It seems that whenever there is a huricane (very low pressure) in the south we have incredible weather up here. The moisture is sucked to the south and the cool air comes down from Canada. The sky is clear, the temps are moderate. Wonderful weather.

This is my point about climate change. In the end it evens out. It is not all bad. It will be good for some, bad for others. The population will move to the good places (as it has done for millions of years) and life will go on.

I remember watching Charlie on TV with a buddy of mine who has a condo in Punta Gorda. Made a fishhook over the Gulf and marched right up Charlotte harbor. Wiped out Punta Gorda. Almost every tree and building, except the old brick commercial strip. 160 mph winds.

The condo to the left of his got a 30 palm tree go vertical through the garage doorm through the kitchen wall and out the patio. Condo on the other side's roof was blown off. Jack's place was fine. Go figure.

Florida needs the rains badly.
