Research from a British university suggests a common preservative found in soft drinks such as Fanta and Pepsi Max has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA.

It was just one flipper baby!!!!

This does not surprise me at all about Sodium Benzoate. I have been avoiding it for years. It's in all kinds of food and drink.

I always cut my cola with seltzer water. When I first started doing it, I would usually mix a 50:50 ratio. I slowly increased the seltzer to about 5 to 1, and now straight Coke and Pepsi are just too sweet for my taste. This concoction is a hell of a lot better than diet cola. And there is no sodium benzoate in the seltzer.

Does this mean the actual aluminum can messes up with the DNA? Talk about a strange headline.

zThe sweetheart deals between regulators and industry a crime in progress. But at some point one has to take personal responsibility for eating healthy. Exercise and across the board 10% caloric reduction prolong life in all species.

they entrusted the safety of additives to the Government

Note that that comment comes from pinko socialist Great Britain.

Here, we use the free enterprise-friendly voluntary system to keep our food safe, with industry lobbyists writing FDA rules which are then regularly not enforced and if they should be by mistake then they are overturned on repeal.

I ain't worried I have been drinking Soda's for so long I should be in the Grave LOL. At least When I do go I will be well Preserved.

Larry

Maybe I should drink diet soda so my great grandkids will be thin. But are some drudgees really screwing up this thread with capitalist nonsense? herm

I looked at the ingredients of Diet Coke.

No Sodium Benzoate, but there is Potassium Benzoate.

Hmmm

I'd better switch to something else before I morph. Luckily I drink more coffeand green tea and water than sodas. Guess I'd better take it slow on the sodas and limit it to a few cans a month. Learn all kinds of helpful things here at Drudge.

Yeah, could someone out there who knows illuminate us on potassium benzoate?

Yeah, could someone out there who knows illuminate us on potassium benzoate?

That seems pretty straight forward. Off the cuff, I'd say they switched to potassium benzoate as a preservative so they can claim low sodium content.

YAV

That sounds like a reasonable thought.

I'm going to do a little studying on the benzoate aspect.

Some compounds aren't dangerous unless mixed.

For instance, the aluminum in aluminum cans can lead to memory loss, but only when you add lemon is the aluminum salt released - the harmful part.
--------

OK, I did some research. Both Potassium Benzoate and Sodium Benzoate are dangerous when combined with Vitamin C. The combination creates 'benzene', a known carcinogen.

Aspertame (which is also in the Diet Pepsi I drink when I do have a soft drink) was once considered as a biological weapon because of it's carcinogenic properties.

Guess who owned an Aspertame factory? Don Rumsfeld. Go figure.

Well, after reading scientific papers I'm worn out LOL

There's what I found.

PS

Aluminum salt is also present when you add lemon to iced tea....just FYI

So, avoid the lemon in your tea if you can. Otherwise you'll forget everything one day LOL

Best way to get rust off of Your Cast Iron skillets and Cast Iron cookware is to get a PLASTIC Container put the rusted Cast Iron cookware in it and fill the PLASTIC container with enough OLD Style Coca Cola till You have at least 2 inches of coca cola at the top of the HIGHEST point of Your Rusted Cast Iron Cookware and let set for 24 to 48 Hours then scrub with either steel wool or a Scotch Bright or Brillo Pad. Guaranteed to come out as good as new.

Since I drink Crown & water I guess I'm okay.

Realize that unions are driving American companies overseas, reason for concern? Just look at American automakers

Larry:
Mail.

When I go for my yearly family visit to the States, I get progressivley disgusted at the amount of chemicals passing for food. Every year I spend away from it, 11 now and counting, makes it seem all the worse. There is nothing more unappetizing than a stroll down the average American Supermarket aisle :-P

Of course colas are harmful. It's a freaking chemical bath. Drink it or use it as a rust remover or paint stripper, take your choice. Doi.

This is a scare story. There is absolutely no proof that sodium benzoate has any harmful effects in humans - Professor Piper showed that it kills yeast, exactly what it is supposed to do.

Don't believe the hype.
