The House voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to delay a Bush administration plan to allow Mexican trucks full access to U.S. highways. The trucks would have to be declared safe first, the lawmakers said, and Mexico would have to give U.S. truckers the same access south of the border.

Well that's good, that should ensure that the plan is dead. Mexico, like China, expects us to bend over and take it while they give up nothing.
Mexico won't allow US trucks to use their roads. Or they'll charge fees so high as to effectively lock them out of the market.

But we will at least have a 1000 truck loads of new illegals coming into the country . Does that mean we will have to recite the koran in spanish ? hola allah , como esta ? Muchas grab my ass >

The Mexican truckdrivers have no "Hours of Service Laws", so they have been driving no telling how long before they even cross the border, and then keep right on driving across our States with no sleep, and probably drugs to keep them awake.

6. American truckdrivers specialize in the movement of freight to keep America's shelves stocked.

Mexican truckdrivers specialize in any contraband, or whatever pays the most....

8. They [Mexican trucks] should be held to a high standard with maintenance on the trucks which is checked regularly to make sure they are in good running order and not a hazard on the highway.

I'm amazed Democrats stopped it, but very happy. A treaty needs to benefit both parties. US truck drivers have been under a full scale attack and need to make a living-that don't get paid that much and always getting crap. Make a human mistake in a long book and they are fined or not given the mileage. Gas is also a problem.

This Mexican driver thing was bull from day 1

This is nothin' a bunch of Teamsters couldn't have handled all by themselves. LOL

What a stupid idea even thinking about letting Mexican trucks into the U.S. Guaranteed way to smuggle illegals and/or terrorist bombs. They don't check every single vehicle entering the U.S. now.

Even at the border, where we have high tech equipment to scan eyes, match fingerprints, etc. of those allowed to enter and travel 25 miles from the border, less than 10 % are checked. Who knows how many of them return? How many of them are actually who their ID cards say they are if they let 90% enter without checking, while those ID cards contain photos and two fingerprints to assure identity - yet 90% are not checked.

George Bush wants to give America and our good jobs to Mexicans. Glad he has adult supervision for SO many reasons.

Americans sit and watch TV why these corporate crooks pull the rug out from under us. We shoud flood congress with letters, emails, phone calls and demand that no Mexican truck is EVER allowed to drive on US highways. The deal that gives American trucks access to Mexico is bull shit because no American truckers want to go down there where hijacking is very common, where truckers get murdered and no law enforcement bothers to do anything. If Mexico wants to have a wild west country that's their business but they shouldn't be allowed to bring their shit here.
BTW, I won't be surprised if American truckers don't take matters into their own hands and make Mexican truckers afraid to come here. Hell, if your government sells them and us, because we will be using the same roads, then I hope other motorists help them. If we had unions in this country we wouldn't have the problems with illegal labor we do now because the scabs wouldn't get away with driving down wages.

This regime has never seen a business deal it didn't like. You have to wonder what special business interest(s) paid for this one.

I live on the Mexican border. But not in Texas. TG

Here's what's going on. Warehouses are being built - all along the US - Mex border. Product is stored in these warehouses because it is cheaper then the US. It's also kind of a tax break.

When orders are placed - Mexican trucks transport product to a US shipping terminal - just over the border. Not exactly sure if this is a law already on the books - - or one to be past. But the law is Mexican trucks can come into US up to 30 miles. Just enough to transport from warehouse to US shipping dock.

Places like San Diego developed quickly around smaller airports with short runways. Product for San Diego has to be shipped to a larger airport such as Los Angeles - - and then trucked to San Diego.

Just another happening - - being dramatized for effect.

This was simply another way for politicians to enact the 'guest worker' program.

By flooding the roads with drivers working for 'cheap cheap', they can run the US truck driver out of business.



This nightmare-waiting-to-happen plan has been around in Texas for many years.

Trucks that would not normally be allowed on US highways because of their age, poor condition, lack of maintenance, and unqualified drivers, will be zooming all over the country if it passes.

This plan should not be slowed down, it should be permanently parked down south of the border.

Is the 30 mile law already in affect? Are they trying to change that?

As I understand it - - Mexican trucks can only come 30 miles across the border. Anything beyond that is required to be under US trucking laws.

In 2002, President George Bush ordered that truck provision be implemented and suits were filed by the unions and environment groups to prevent it. The Supreme Court finally ended the delaying tactics, saying it is not necessary for the Bush administration to do a lengthy environmental impact study and can allow Mexican trucks on U.S. highways whenever it wants.

The goal of NAFTA is to provide for the free flow of goods between Canada, Mexico and the United States and certainly the ability to move goods via truck without undue bureaucratic rules is part of achieving that goal.

Currently, Mexican trucks transfer their cargoes to American trucks for interstate travel, which adds cost and time to deliveries, thwarting the effort to encourage free trade.

Despite the claims of NAFTA critics, the safety issue is a smokescreen. Mexican trucks will be inspected and have to meet the same regulatory standards as American trucks. If they choose not to meet those standards, then they can be cited and prevented from using the highways.

In fact, Jim Chessum, administrator of The Greater Yuma Port Authority, told The Sun he doubts the provision will have much impact on current practices because many Mexican truckers won't want to deal with U.S. regulations and fees.

U.S. inspection of Mexican trucks deflates objection

It has been more than a decade since the North American Free Trade Agreement provided for more access to the United States for Mexican truckers carrying goods, but it has yet to happen. That will soon change.

The Bush administration announced recently that it is starting an inspection program to address concerns about the safety of Mexican trucks, the reason often given for denying access to trucks from that country.

Currently Mexican truckers can bring goods across the border and a short distance into the country, but the goods must be transferred to American trucks for the remainder of their journey in this country.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters announced the new inspection program in El Paso, Texas. It would involve U.S. agents working with Mexican trucking companies to ensure the safety of the vehicles and competence of the drivers.

Under the pilot program, U.S. inspectors would check every Mexican truck and interview the drivers to ensure they can read and speak English. Licenses and driving records will be verified and Mexican companies will be required to have U.S. insurance.

Despite these stringent requirements, objections were immediately raised to the program. The complaints from lawmakers, safety advocates and trucking union officials was that the Mexican truckers would endanger American motorists, present a possible security risk to the nation and take away American jobs.

Canadian truckers already carry goods into the United States, and American truckers take goods into Canada under NAFTA. Why shouldn't the same thing be happening with Mexico? The answer from opponents has always been that Mexican trucks are unsafe.
