Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Rachel Reid, BBC News, Saudi Arabia: The night manager of the leisure centre, Walid, was waiting for me, in a state of nervous excitement. "Good morning madam," he said. "We have everything ready for you. We have cordoned off the pool, placed screens all around. So if you have everything you need I shall lock you out here so that you won't be disturbed."

Special attention according to grievance group. Who knew the dems were so close to the Islamic crackpots?

Well then, I guess that would explain this photo:

Oh, wait... hmmm...

The women of Saudi Arabia are not just folded away behind swathes of hot black cloth, they live segregated lives, ushered out of the all-male public spaces into so called "family" areas, escorted everywhere by husbands or male relatives, and expected to ask for male permission to travel.

How many American lives have the Bush family wasted to protect this way of life? Be sure to add in those 9-11 victims, since GWB gave saudistan a pass for funding, staffing and supporting it.

A pool without bikini's is like corn flakes without milk! The dog don't hunt! But them Arabs love them some porn though. Gotta love the hypocrisy of religion.

Explains the foot bath's in the KC Airport. Or they have a terrible foot odor problem there.

We report, you decide.

Gotta love the hypocrisy of religion.

That really should be..."the hypocrisy of religious people".

IMO

"Good morning madam," he said. "We have everything ready for you. We have cordoned off the pool, placed screens all around."

"So if you have everything you need I shall lock you out here so that you won't be disturbed."

He paused for a moment with his keys, and fixed me with a conspiratorial look.

"I have to congratulate you, Madam, I think you are the first woman to swim in public in all Saudi Arabia!"

A woman wearing the veil
Saudi leaders say women will be allowed to vote in 2009
I grinned. "A small revolution?" I asked.

"No a big revolution. I don't think you realise how big," he said, shaking his head in amazement.

I wonder if it will become "Rosa parks" big. That would be really exciting.

Should I assume that a woman in a thong is out of the question?

Guess we won't be seein' no mooselams at Hippie Hollow anytime soon.

Well, this article cetainly explains why the Saudi womans swim team always finishes out of the medals at the Olympics.

Plus it's really hard to make a decent time in a swim race while wearing a Burkha.

Be Well.

Everyone is okay. Fortunately I don't have anybody in Greensburg. I do have a sister-in-law in Kinsley. Very awful situation.

How about you??

I went to a swimming hole near Ashland, Oregon. It's called "The Quarry". Didn't see any thongs there, in fact no clothing at all.

There were some suspicious looking men peeking out from behind the trees. Must have been frustrated Arab men.

I have seen uncovered Arab women. I wish I hadn't. Sorry ladies but, butt ugly would have been welcome.

Always surprising how many self described "Liberal Feminist" women in the West defend or don't believe the discrimination towards women in Islam. Very odd that some women in the West (often those who are quite liberal and progressive and have also not traveled to developing countries) have a kind of knee-jerk defense of all things Muslim as they are anti-war in Iraq, see Bush and the GOP as waging a war on the religion, and somehow feel an obligation to confuse the issue of women's rights with Bush and the "male dominated GOP". As though the two are some how connected.
Bush can be completely wrong and many in Islam can also be guilty of blatantly discriminating against many women.
This article is a refreshing reminder of the resistance to women's rights in a place like Saudi.

"How many American lives have the Bush family wasted to protect this way of life?"

Well, Northguy3, the real question to ask is how much more are you willing pay to fill up your gas tank?

Y'a see, about 25% of US oil imports comes from Saudi Arabia. The US can't afford to antagonize S.A by making noises about human rights, equal rights, women's rights, rights in general; the Saudis can always find another customer for their Black Gold. The Saudis are our Big Buddies in the Middle East, at least as long as they have bountiful oil reserves.

Hypocrisy is a non-issue when it's pumped into a gas tank.

Remember this next time you fill up.

And with the Ex-CEO of Haliburton as the second in command, you can sure as shit guarantee that there aint gonna be any tech. advances to ween us off of oil anytime soon...

Progress is sometimes quite tenuous. If the anti-modernists keep adhering to their interpretation of life today through lenses that are 1300 years old, they may yet turn back time. And what that could mean for humanity is pretty grim.

Muhammad was a controversial person in his time. He may have spoken the words of the Angel Gabriel and from Gabriel the word of God when he had his spasms and seizures. But in the Hadith, he turns out to have been a pretty progressive man. He advocated women and men interacting in everyday affairs. He encouraged his wives to go out and about without his escorting them everywhere. Even his wives, especially Caisha, his youngest wife, were influential leaders in the early Muslim world.

It is likely that if Muhammad could return today, he would deal with the developed world in a fairly benign way. He would probably intellectualize the differences between the West and the culture he came from in a more peaceful way, admiring the West's sense of equality and fairness, but perhaps advocating even greater fairness and continuing to advocate the Judeo-Christian concept of equality in dignity and value for all humans, irrespective of sex or color.

If Muhammad could see the silly extremes that his native Saudi Arabia has taken to ensure that women "dress modestly" and reflect honor on their families, he would likely be very, very appalled. And he would probably refuse any association with the terrorists of 9/11, 3/11, or 7/11.

But wait ... webcams are now all the rage in Saudi Arabia because teenage girls buy them and then disappear into their bedrooms to perform strip shows - FREE OF CHARGE - in chat rooms.

I kid you not. It looks as if the net may be the thing that finally undermines this "modesty" thing that the Muslim men perpetrate on their women I think to keep them down and unempowered.
