Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Monday, April 30, 2007

The St. Louis Cardinals are mourning a teammate for the second time in five years, and it isn't any easier this time. Josh Hancock, a relief pitcher who helped the team win the World Series last season, died early Sunday when his sport utility vehicle slammed into the back of a tow truck, bringing back painful memories of Darryl Kile's death in June 2002.

Former Red Sox pick. Sad.

No one's guaranteed a tomorrow.

Not often people drive straight into trucks. Not saying it happened here, but generally when it happens, the driver who hit the car was drinking. Either way, life is short-too bad

Har-
The story in this morning's paper said there were no alcoholic containers in his vehicle... and that he appeared to have been driving at OR just over the speed limit.

Frankly, it was probably a case where (at 1235am) he might have been a bit tired... or at least inattentive. The flat bed wrecker was evidently in the left hand land... so maybe he saw lights and assumed the truck was moving forward. Only before it was too late did he realize it was stopped, since the truck driver thought he saw Hancock's SUV attempt to swerve at the last moment.

Most likely inattentive, since pro ballplayers routinely keep later schedules than the average worker.

Anyone who's ever driven that stretch of highway will probably tell you it's one of the more dangerous areas to drive in St. Louis.

At points it's like driving in a tunnel because there are walls on both sides and they don't give you much of a shoulder should you need to get out of the way. There are also several on/off ramps which are too short.

I can see how this could happen, all it takes is someone a little tired or maybe talking on the phone, switching the CD in their player or any other distraction.

MoDot is currently in the process of rebuilding much of the highway through St. Louis but it wasn't soon enough for Josh.

We'll always remember him as a World Champion.

It's unfortunate - but why is this bigger news than the hundreds that have died in Iraq and Afghanistan?

That's right by the exit I take for work (Forest Park Pkwy. and Grand Ave.). It is a particularly dangerous stretch, if someone is parked in the left lane than it's a bunch of trouble.

Very tragic event. I just saw the guy pitch 3 innings Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium.

LUCYE:
It's not bigger news but it is news.

was an illegal immigrant behind the wheel of the tow truck?

Wow. Darryl Kile and now this. How sad. My condolences.

It is a dangerous area.

I had a wreck right around there myself in about '90 or '91. Someone in a beaten up old station wagon plowed right into me and drove off. Fortunately, I wasn't really injured -- just sore and freaked out.

Anyway, this situation with Hancock is really sad.

Cardinals Pitcher Dies in Car Crash

YEAH!

I wonder how long until the Bush Admin, thru the Condi Rice apparatus, is going to "redefine" what this means?

Best wishes to all cardinals fans and most importantly to the family of what I understand to be a fine young man. You will be missed not only in the realm of baseball, but in humanity as well.

Ho Hum,

People die in car crashes every day.

Nice waste of a post there 2112. We know that, but its good when people are noticed, its too bad that you have to be a somebody to be noticed when you die, but hey thats life.

My prayers our with his family. I have some friends in MS that know his family. Nice group of people.

2112, Would you say the same to Neil about his daughter? I think you know what I'm talking about.

Silentmajority & TJTull,

I understand what you are saying, I was just commenting on the fact that it happens all the time. And as you said silent it IS too bad you have to be high profile.......

TJ, not only his daughter but then a few years later his wife. Sad yes. Uncommon? No!

OK, I posted that for reactions nothing more. God bless his family and friends and I hope they all have the strength to carry on.

BTW., Tull and Rush are each comming to SLC this summer. Should be good concerts.

Soldiers in the war are volunteers.Drunk drivers are losers who pay big prices.
