The Basij Mostazafan the "mobilization of the oppressed" consisted of short-term volunteer militias. Most of the Basij members were not yet 18. They went enthusiastically and by the thousands to their own destruction. "The young men cleared the mines with their own bodies," a veteran of the Iran-Iraq War has recalled, "It was sometimes like a race. Even without the commander's orders, everyone wanted to be first."[2]

The western media showed little interest for the Basiji perhaps because journalists could not be present during the hostilities or perhaps because they did not believe the reports. Such disinterest has persisted to this day. The 5000 dead of Saddam Hussein's poison gas attack on the Kurds of Halabja have remained in our memory. History has forgotten the children of the minefields.

Today, however, Ahmadinejad appears in public in his Basiji uniform. During the war, he served as one of the Basiji instructors who turned children into martyrs. The generation that fought in the Iran-Iraq War has come to power along with Ahmadinejad. He owed his election in Summer 2005 to the contemporary Basiji movement. In Fall, he announced a "Basiji Week." According to a report in the newspaper Kayan, some 9 million Basiji heeded the call, "forming a human chain some 8,700 kilometers long ... . In Tehran alone, some 1,250,000 people turned out."[3] In his speeches, Ahmadinejad praises the "Basiji culture" and the "Basiji power" with which "Iran today makes its presence felt on the international and diplomatic stage." Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, Chair of the Guardian Council, goes so far as to describe the very existence of Iran's nuclear program as a triumph of those Iranians who "serve the Basiji movement and possess the Basiji-psyche and Basiji-culture."[4]"

I lived in Tehran in the late 70's while TDY'd to the Embassy.

I can tell you Iranians were angry for very good reasons. The Shah of Iran, who we put in power after aiding the overthrow of their Prime Minister and Parliment in 1953, was a tyrant who held regular outdoor mass hangings of his political rivals in large public squares with thousands in attendance. He terrorized the Iranian people, kidnapped and tortured countless innocent citizens, and was responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths if not millions during his 'reign'. He and his sister raped the national treasury, and death squads roamed the streets.

It was no surprise to me or anyone else when he was overthrown. You'd rebel against that too.

Bush was offered a meeting with the previous and moderate President of Iran, Mohammad Khatami an Iranian reformer who wasn't unfriendly to the West) last year and turned him down flat. Khatami wanted to share insight, and act as an intermediary between Ahmadinejad and Bush to resolve the standoff and tame the rhetoric.

Bush is a president some people are supporting no matter what. In many ways he and Amadinejad are birds of a feather Arrogant and reckless.

My question about the insurgents being trained in Iran is do they receive more than ten days training? Cuz that is all we give our soldiers about the dangers they will face in Iraq under the new "surge" stupidity. It is pretty sad when the insurgents begin training their military better than we do. Regarding Christianity and reincarnation, I'm reminded of the story of Jesus healing the man who'd been blind since birth with dust and spittle, placing the mud on the man's eyes and healing him.

His diciples asked if the man was blind because of his sins or the sins of his father - a definite reference to reincarnation, the belief in which was a part of Christian doctrine until just prior to The Middle Ages.

On topic, perhaps if Muslims, Christians, and Jews could focus on Abraham as a common forebear, maybe we could find some common ground rather than be divided by whom we each consider the later messengers of God.

After all, Mohammad and Jesus essentially preached the same thing, and both's words were recorded decades if not centuries later, and certainly molded to suit narrow interests, with text chosen (as the Bible was from hundreds of writings at the Council of Nicea). In that case they didn't give Jesus top billing. History and the Apostle Paul got far more of the pages than Jesus did. Thus, justification could be found for doing almost anything Christian leaders wanted to do...and did.

I'm sure the Koran is a similar story. I read it after 9/11 and am no expert. But, in both instances the argument for peace and tolerance as opposed to war is clear. A condition I'm sure a vast majority from both worlds would prefer if they could shut up the crazies for their own good.

This is complete and absolute bullshit. Rex Tomb has never uttered anything like that. For one...I have e-mailed Mr. Tomb myself about this very same issue and he told me in an e-mail that the reason why is because they already have him charged with the 1998 U.S. Embassy Bombings in Africa and the 2000 Bombing of the U.S.S. Cole. That's sufficient enough to get a conviction. He also told me that, unless it is absolutely necessary, the FBI does not need to charge Bin Laden with the attacks of September 11th because they are assured of a conviction using the embassy and Cole attacks alone.

Here is the e-mail that I received back from Rex Tomb on August 4, 2006.

Dear Brandon,

Usama Bin Laden is formally charged with the 1998 bombings of the American Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. When filed, it was these Federal Charges that immediately resulted in a major effort by the FBI to locate, arrest and bring Bin Laden to justice. In 1999, he was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List to aid in this effort. The wanted posters, which are still in use, were printed at that time.

Because outstanding Federal charges for the American Embassy bombings were already on record, prosecutors deemed it unnecessary to formally charge Bin Laden for any alleged involvement in the events of September 11th. This is because he can be arrested and detained on existing charges, and any additional charges can be added when, and if needed, at a later time.

They were used to catch him after 9/11. If you can remember...we did invade Afghanistan with more than 100,000 Army, Army National Guard, Green Berets, and SOCCOM forces in November of 2001. And as to your claim that Bin Laden was inside the United States the summer before 9/11...where the hell is your proof? But I will grant you that a senior Al-Qaeda operative was in New York in May 2001, that being Khalid Sheikh Mohammed...probably there to help scout possible targets. Several other known Al-Qaeda operatives (Khalid al-Midhdar and Salim al-Hazmi) were able to slip through and arrive undetected in the United States in July 2001. Both men would end up being two of the five hijackers aboard American Airlines Flight 77 which would eventually crash into the Pentagon.

Richard Clarke wrote extensively in his book about Bush's seeming uninterest in Bin Laden. Paul O'Neill, highly respected Bush 43 Treas. Sec. wrote in his book, 'The Price of Loyalty', that the first item on the new Bush Admin. cabinet meeting was Iraq - accompianied with maps that contained specific oil companies allocated to specific oil fields.

Carter "withdrew" after the failed attempt to rescue the U.S. hostages in Iran.

Reagan withdrew from Lebanon after the killing of 243 U.S. peacekeeper Marines.

Bush41 withdrew from Iraq without destroying the Republican Guards.

Clinton withdrew fron Somalia after the Blackhawk debacle and from Saudi Arabia after the Khobar Towers bombing.

In EACH case I would have been behind ANY ONE of those presidents who would have taken aggressive action. It's not a Democrat or Republican thing. We can surely debate the when, where and who, but a serious confrontation with Islamic jihadists was inevitable. Iraq may have been a poor choice in hindsight, but now that we are there it is a BIGGER mistake to tuck our tails and leave without achieving a victory. WITHDRAWAL hasn't done much for peace if you just look at the results of the previous decades.

For me, it's NOT a GOP thing. I'll be just as glad as the democrats when Bush is out of office. I think many other conservatives feel the same. It is just too bad that so many here have let their HATRED of Bush color their thoughts to such an extyent that they can think of nothing else.

PARIS, Oct. 31 (AFP) - Osama Bin Laden was treated in July at the American hospital in Duba where he met a person in charge of the CIA, the French daily newspaper the Barber and Radio International France (RFI) reported on Wednesday.

The two medias quoted "a witness, professional partner of the administrative direction of the hospital", as confirming that the man that the United States suspects of having financed the attacks of September 11 arrived on July 4 at Duba by plane coming from Quetta, in Pakistan.

Osama was immediately transferred to the hospital for a renal processing (Kidney Dialysis). He left the establishment on July 14, adds the Barber.

During this stay, reports the daily newspaper, the local representative of the CIA was seen going in the room of Bin Laden.

"A few days later, the CIA man bragged in front of some friends that he had visited the billionaire saudi".

According to the Barber and RFI who quote an "authorized source", the representative of the CIA was recalled to Washington on July 15.
