A student has been suspended from school in America for coming to class dressed as a pirate. But the disciplinary action has provoked controversy because the student says that the ban violates his rights, as the pirate costume is part of his religion.

North Carolina strikes again.

Bloody Pastafarians. Always trying to shove their beliefs down everyone's throats.

I'm glad you posted on this, Rev..

I was going to offer a penne for your thoughts

This is only one of the many sites dedicated to the worship and honor of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Creator of the Cosmos, Noodly Manipulator of Earthly Reality- may He touch you with His Noodly Appendage and bathe you in His Sauce forever, RAmen.

flyingspaghettimonster.org

Great Googly Mooglies!

Wot hath Data brought us wif that fine link?...

"Since then, the Flying Spaghetti Monster has gained countless followers worldwide, although there are those who remain spagnostic."

Sweet baby Jeebus!

Can eye get a RAmen?!

That's funny right there.

On Topic?

Spud thinks this kid has every right to wear wotever religious garb he wants to into the classroom.

These claims that the outfit are "disruptive" are ridiculous.

Spud luffs the way the FSM folk interjected themselves into the madness that was the ID debate by demanding equal time?

Pirate Costumes?
Hajibs?
Veils?
Turbans?
Yarmulkas?
Crosses?
Up-side down crosses fer Satanists?

Howsabout equal time fer athiests?
Can they wear "God is dead" buttons?

Can Rastafarians bring their Chalices wif them where ever they go?

Ya either respect everybodies beliefs or you respect nobodies.

Be Well.

PS: Spud found this neat-o bible quote on a Rasta website...

"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so." -- Genesis 1: 29-30

And yes, that does mean...

* DB *

"a penne for your thoughts"

Garners Prob a FF from Spud!

That's using yer * ahem * noodle!

Be Well.

Bloody Pastafarians. Always trying to shove their beliefs down everyone's throats.

But they go good with parmesean cheese.

given every green herb for meat: and it was so." -- Genesis 1: 29-30

indeed a good quote ole Spud of the Romulans!

I have been contacted by the Romulans and they say that Romano Cheese is more appropriate for this ceremony.

They also said that it was never intended that Children be religious until they were 18.

On Romulan they have to be 18, get a license and pass the "test" to be partakers of the Green Herb and to be fully touched by the Great Noodley appendage..

Let it be said....let it be done!

This actually made it to the front page?

WWFSMD?

His parents should wear his ass out. BTW, is Lasagna the devil in this so called religion?

His parents should wear his ass out.

Why?

This is actually quite interesting, it's like asking a Christian to not wear the cross, would they Christians tolerate that? I'd say no.

Good.
If they can keep a kid from dressing like a pirate for his religion, they can keep a girl from comming to school in a burka.

Everyone's equal, no one get to dress funny.

This is actually quite interesting, it's like asking a Christian to not wear the cross, would they Christians tolerate that? I'd say no.

Are there actually any established religions that exist solely to mock people of faith?

This flying spaghetti monster bullshit was started just as a reason to be dicks to people who follow a religion. Fuck this kid, I say expel him for his intollerance.

Everyone's equal, no one get to dress funny.

Posted by Norm_ at 2007-03-30 10:10 AM

Well 'funny' is a little bit of an eye of the beholder thing isn't it?

Is it funny for an African American to dress in one of those cultural outfits from Africa? It sure does stand out.

Rob, why are you so angry at devout followers of a separate faith? He has every right to his faith as you do yours? Why are you such a 'hater'?

His parents should wear his ass out.

Why?

Because he is obviously capable of 'getting the joke' and that means he might be capable of using his brain. That makes him dangerous.

Are there actually any established religions that exist solely to mock people of faith?

Ness:
Front page? Yep. Guess RCade likes funny flags.
Hans:
This "thread's" for you.

Rob, why are you so angry at devout followers of a separate faith? He has every right to his faith as you do yours? Why are you such a 'hater'?

Come on... we both know why this flying spaghetti monster crap started. Its not a religion. He's not a devout follower of a faith he's a little liberal prick who feels the need to attack people of faith by mocking their beliefs, fuck him... I hope they kick him out of school, which ruins any hope of college and the best job he can ever get is at Circuit City where he will somewhat succeed until he is fired for making to much money.

Has there ever been an athiest who wasn't a dick?

Has there ever been an athiest who wasn't a dick?

Guess not...

What a bunch of dumbass administrators. By taking such strong objection they have ensured that dressing up like a pirate is the fast ticket to being cool. They should have had the nerdiest, most unpopular teachers compliment and praise his outfit. You honestly think he'd continue wearing it after that?

"Has there ever been an athiest who wasn't a dick?"

One of my brothers is an atheist. The thing is that it would never come up unless you specifically asked him about it. In his case it is a true non-belief.

The atheists you are talking about are the ones who actually do have a belief: That they are intellectually and morally superior to non-atheists. And they don't pass on any chance to let you know it.

As for this kid, he's out for attention. If they would have ignored him, he would have stopped on his own and moved on to piercings or some other shit. Giving him this attention ensures he'll stick with his "religion".

Fuck this kid, I say expel him for his intollerance.

Posted by Rob_The_A_Hole at 2007-03-30 10:14 AM

ahhhhhh YOU must be as Christian!

Ya either respect everybodies beliefs or you respect nobodies

This is an odd way of putting it. I don't see the ban on overt religious statements in a public setting as stemming from disrespecting a particular religious belief but out of respecting ALL religious beliefs.

This is actually quite interesting, it's like asking a Christian to not wear the cross, would they Christians tolerate that? I'd say no.

Not really. This is like a Christian coming to school dress as Christ in period costume with a crown of thorns and the marks of a stigmata. I don't think there would be many public schools that would tolerate such dress.

If the Pastafarian wishes to wear a medallion of the FSM or a pirate, I doubt anybody would really care.

Cheers

ahhhhhh YOU must be as Christian!

A Christian married to a Jew and a whole assortment of friends and colleuges from every walk of life... except Athiest... I don't think I know any of them.

I'm okay with just about any belief out there, this one just happens to piss me off because its sole existence is to mock literally billions of decent and honest people...

By dressing up as a pirate in accordance with this "religion" he is saying, "You're all stupid country folk who believe in magic... why not just be like me and believe that a giant bowl of spaghetti created everything cuz that's basically what you believe now you just call that Spaghetti, 'Jesus' or 'Allah' or 'Adonnai'." Fuck this kid... but more importantly fuck his parents...

Is it funny for an African American to dress in one of those cultural outfits from Africa? It sure does stand out.

Yes, it's distracting and its silly. And done for no other reason than to be different for its own sake.
Should everybody play dress up?

Should the WASPs come to school in a powdered wig? The Japaneese girls in komonos? The German boys in lederhosen?

I have Greek ancestry, should I have gone to school in a toga?
Should the school have allowed such nonsense?

The atheists you are talking about are the ones who actually do have a belief: That they are intellectually and morally superior to non-atheists. And they don't pass on any chance to let you know it.

A vocal minority is what you saying...

Okay... that's fair... The only atheists I've ever encountered have been the type you describe above... they're dicks. Like this kid (and I'm guessing his parents) they make the whole lot look like assholes.

Rob,

By dressing up as a pirate in accordance with this "religion" he is saying, "You're all stupid country folk who believe in magic... why not just be like me and believe that a giant bowl of spaghetti created everything cuz that's basically what you believe now you just call that Spaghetti, 'Jesus' or 'Allah' or 'Adonnai'."

No, that's merely how you interpret it. This kid is the only one who can explain what, if anything, he is trying to say.

Misunderstandings like this happen all the time. If I hold hands with someone while on a date, some people will surely assume I'm doing it to be the center of attention. But what's going through my head is "I like this date" and I act accordingly.

In a nutshell - don't assume you know people you've never even met.

"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so."

Don't bogart that joint, my friend, pass it over to me. Amen.

The kid does have a sense of humor and is making a point in today's schools.

Who's religion is deemed valid or invalid -- even a nutty movie version that thinks the Almighty is a can of spagettios. Then you have to let all Muslims girls wear veils or head scarves or burqas in our tax-funded public schools (currently a big point of contention in the French public schools) or a follower of the Wiccan religion wear a pointy hat, dress all in black, and bring their black cat to school.

If you let in one religion or belief's 'religious' garb to be worn you have to allow all of them. The schools need to get a handle on this "practice my religion" thing now and call a halt to it -- for everybody.

Stick all these kids in mandatory school uniforms and be done with it.

This flying spaghetti monster bullshit was started just as a reason to be dicks to people who follow a religion
Yeah and that Jesus crap was stolen from the Egyptians to make fun of those who followed the Sun God.

Rob bitches about the intolerance of the pastafarians and atheists, but hates all non-protestant religions himself.
Why don't the Christians just prove that God exists, bring Him to a big meeting and show the pastafarians they are wrong?
Couldn't be too hard.

"The only atheists I've ever encountered have been the type you describe above... they're dicks."

Typically, you don't know much about a person's religious beliefs when you first meet them.

People who do spout their beliefs right off the bat tend to be dicks whether they are religious or atheist.

As for the kid dressing up like a pirate - The guy who invented the religion showed a mathematical correlation between the delcine of pirates and the increases in global warming and other negative environmental trend. His "conclusion" is that the persecuation of pirates has led to these trends. He was really just trying to show that a mathematical correlation is not the same as causation.

But the kid is just being a dick.

Rob bitches about the intolerance of the pastafarians and atheists, but hates all non-protestant religions himself

I'm a roman catholic married to a jew...

LMAO...

You really got my number there...

No, that's merely how you interpret it. This kid is the only one who can explain what, if anything, he is trying to say.

Misunderstandings like this happen all the time.

No... its not a misunderstanding... that is the essence of this flying spaghetti monster nonsense... its just a way for athiests to be dicks.

I think it needs to be pointed out that the entire "Flying Spaghetti Monster" thing was a response to a School Board trying to shove Creationism into the curriculum. In other words, if you have to put that religion into the schools, then you have to discuss this one, regardless of how absurd it might seem. In short, religion has no place in school. Any religion. Oh, yeah -- these members of the school board were subsequently ousted from their positions. I think that about covers it.

The next time you feel the Devil tempting you, just ask yourself --

WWFSMD

In de name of de Pazta, and of de Zauz, and of de Pinot Grigot, RAmen.

Having said that, and keeping in mind I am an atheist myself (and I'm certain somebody or other will come along and remind everybody I'm an asshole as well, which I admit with a certain degree of pride), this kid went out of his way to be an ass. If Pastafarianism were a recognized, established religion, then he might have a case. But, as has been noted on several other occasions on this thread, the FSM is a joke that was cooked up to screw with the Creationists trying to get their point of view inserted into a science class (where it does not belong; philosophy classes, theology classes, and I could probably think of one or two others where it could be included without raising so much as an eyebrow, but not a biology or physics class, for example).

So, this kid, for using the "religion" excuse, does indeed deserve a boot to de haed (not literally of course).

I've been a member of the Church of David Blaine for 4 years now and everyday I escape from a straitjacket and hold my breath for 6 minutes as a simple spiritual offering to the great one. I hope others will consider joining.

A denomination's status as official religion does not always imply that the jurisdiction prohibits the existence or operation of other sects or religious bodies. It all depends upon the government and the level of tolerance the citizens of that country have for each other. Some countries with official religions have laws that guarantee the freedom of worship, full liberty of conscience, and places of worship for all citizens; and implement those laws than other countries that do not have an official or established state religion.

A "denomination" is not a 'reconized" state religion but can still receives tax-exempt status.

last line shouldn't be in italics

Isn't that what the Jews said about that Jesus guy and his new religion?

The kid is a little prick (atheist or not) and only wants to mock other religions with this costume. His parents should act like adults and put a stop to his bullshit before it gets him hurt. But only if they care about him.

James

Is that article a joke? Sounds like it should be on Saturday Night Live...

"Isn't that what the Jews said about that Jesus guy and his new religion?"

No. What a moronic question.

Perhaps they could come to a compromise, and just let him wear the eye-patch. After all, who wears a tri-fold hat these days? No parrots, though. They squawk incessantly poop everywhere, and can be taught to say all sorts of vulgar things.

If you are Catholic (as am I) then most likely, you believe in science (after we got our collective heads out of our asses and apologized to Galileo.) The Flying Spaghetti Monster thing was not started as an assault on people like you and I. It was a direct response to those religious people who want to displace science in the classroom with religious instruction. The purpose wasn't to insult every good, honest reigious person. It was intended to insult bad, overbearing, prosthelytizing, mean spirited nitwits who don't understand the proper place for our religions (in our churches, homes and hearts.)

If you aren't anti-science, he wasn't talking to you.

Hey, if this kid's antics can stir up Rob-the-phony-catholic's vitriol, the kid deserves a prize. Listening to Rob go off the deep end over this incident is absolutely priceless. Self-important, self-righteous, religious hypocrites like Rob make recruiting for Pastafarinism easy.

Evolution, Global Climate Change, carbon dating, etc. all real...

And you're right that this was started as an assault on the whole warning stickers on science books crap... but that stuff is over now and most (if not all) of those school board members are gone now. Back then it was funny and served an actual purpose... however now its just a way for the athiest dicks (described above) to act intelectually superior to people of faith.

I rest my case LeadBelly...

Hey douche, I don't think we've ever spoken before, who are you?

Rob,
Again, if you aren't threatened by science, it shouldn't bother you. If it's turned into someting else, that is in the eye of the beholder.

You say "now it's all over" but it's not. That Kansas school board got thier walking papers, but those goddamn protestant, fundie, backwater talibaptist types are still out there trying to put religion in the science classroom or in the geological (as in SCIENTIFIC) monument bookstores.

You probably don't know a single religious cook. Most of the religious people you know are probably just like the athiests you don't know about. They are for the most part polite about their religious expression and don't try to force it on anyone else. My religious friends are the same. That's because we don't associate with goobers. But they are out there. There are pople like the Fallwells and Dobsons in neighborhoods and schoolboards and city councils all over the country. There are people up to no good in our "Christian" name. It sucks and I wish they would shut up. A little smartalecy backlash from the irreverent crowd doesn't surprise me in the least, and given the behavior of our worst representatives now and throughout history, we ought to be grateful they have a sense of humor.

however now its just a way for the athiest dicks (described above) to act intelectually superior to people of faith

Most of us "athiest[sic] dicks" have no need to act. People like you prove such a point every day. Hell, today, I saw some evangelical-type trying to scare a non-believer by invoking Pascal's wager (real fucking original)! Again, more proof bestowed by your own ilk!

Oh, you're not like those other ones, huh? I guess you don't liked being grouped up with others like that, right?

Well, I'll say this for Rob; at least he's consistent.

Rob,
I think some of the reason a few posters are reveling in your ruffled feathers here is not because they delight in harassing unassimming "good hearted"religious folk. I think it's more because they find your outrage itself ironic and amusing. The insult of the flying spaghetti monster "religion" is primarily directed at poeple you or I would never invite into our homes. Yet you frame the issue as though you are one with them in persecution. At the same time, you would most likely take offense if a lib characterized your religious beilef as of the same character as the God Hates Fags people, or faith healers.

Do you see the irony?

I'm a roman catholic married to a jew...

So which one burns in Hell?
As a Protestant, I can tell you, both of you will, but just wait and see.

The reaction to this kid is just another proof that religion needs to be classified as a mental disorder.

I think some of the reason a few posters are reveling in your ruffled feathers

I stopped reading right there... Leadbelly you of all people know what its like when my feathers are ruffled... this ain't it.

Again, if you aren't threatened by science, it shouldn't bother you. If it's turned into someting else, that is in the eye of the beholder

This group individually doesn't bother me... its the condescending intelectually superior attitude that atheists put out that bothers me...

the ironic thing is that I support what this group was trying to say, religion and science shouldn't be taught in the same class. But their dickish way of insulting all religion and all believers annoys me.

A Christian married to a Jew and a whole assortment of friends and colleuges from every walk of life... except Athiest... I don't think I know any of them.

You THINK you don't know us. We are all walks of life and knowing your type wouldn't even bring up religion or lack there of in front of you.

Actually, it kind of is. Plenty of Jews back then thought Jesus was a fraud and a charlatan (and a dick I'm sure).

As for atheists being dicks, I wouldn't doubt a lot are, how many Mensa members are dicks too? There is actually a correlation.

This group individually doesn't bother me... its the condescending intelectually superior attitude that atheists put out that bothers me...
This group individually doesn't bother me... its the condescending intelectually superior attitude that atheists put out that bothers me...

You are again ascribing your perception of a vocal minority as the defining attributes of an entire group. I just wish you could realize that this is exactly what most non-religious folks probably feel about the vocal minority of religious people. I don't think you appreciate what "we" look like form the outside.

the ironic thing is that I support what this group was trying to say, religion and science shouldn't be taught in the same class. But their dickish way of insulting all religion and all believers annoys me.

They aren't insulting all believers. They are insulting believers who have no sense of humor and/or who don't believe in science. They are insulting the kind of bielevers who don't have the good sense or manners not to put their religion in everyone else's face.

What they say has NOTHING to do with your faith unless you let it.

People who have no respect for others' beliefs are subhuman. I must now go put the guy growing off my hind quarters to bed.

People who have no respect for others' beliefs are subhuman.

Brilliant!!!

Congrats on the first step, dude. Some people are less than human. Some are born that way, and some just become that way. I, for one, think we should put a rest to this whole pirate-costume-wearing incident at the school with a well timed firing sqaud. During a brown-bag lunch. In the courtyard.(You wouldn't need drug-sniffing dogs or detention for a freakin' decade!)

;)

The school, in North Buncombe, North Carolina, remains adamant that their decision to suspend Killian for a day has nothing to do with his religion, and quite a lot to do with his repeated refusal to heed warnings against wearing pirate outfits.

Sorry. I've wanted to post this paragraph since I first read it. It's a beautiful flower, a wry rose growing through the cracks of journalism.

Bryan Killian says that he follows the Pastafarian religion, and that as a crucial part of his faith, he must wear 'full pirate regalia' as prescribed in the holy texts of Pastafarianism.

OK. It was funny all the way through.

Everyone's equal, no one get to dress funny.

Yes but who is the judge to rule what is acceptable and what is not?

As opposed to inner city "yoots" coming to class with the pants hanging halfway down their ass?

As opposed to mini skirts and bare midriffs showing pierced belly buttons?

As opposed to wearing a football jersey?

The school should adopt a standard conservative dress code of khakis and button down shirts for everyone. Problem solved.

People who have no respect for others' beliefs are subhuman.

Brilliant!!!

Evangelical faux christians that try to shove their messiah on me are the first offenders. I had one faux christian at my first job out of college that felt it was his duty to invite everyone to the Billy Graham crusade and placed flyers on everyone's desk. He lasted until the end of the week. Damn shame as his wife just had a baby and he needed the job.

Next come the Jehovahs who love to come around my neighborhood every other week to "sell" their beliefs. When they knock on the door, I yell out "nobodies home". It works even better if they can see me through the window.

"Are there actually any established religions that exist solely to mock people of faith?

Rob_the_ahole,

As a born-again Pastafarian, I have to speak up. ALL religions are made-up to control people. The great thing about the Flying Spaghetti Monster is he has not said anything about tithing, only that his followers enjoy the marinara sauce. Ramen.
