Mississippi residents aren't shy about shooting back at a remark about their state that was uttered by Representative Charles B. Rangel of New York.

You know, the tooth brush was invented in Mississippi. If it had been invented anywhere else, it would be called the teethbrush.

Yeah, I know, that was pathetic.
I have a very dear friend from Mississippi.

pretty stupid thing to say...
but not to think

Is payback time coming for redneck crackers?

Yeah, I know, that was pathetic.

And grossly incorrect. The modern toothbrush was invented in 1780's England by a prisoner.

Pretty funny joke, though. Although, as a North Carolinian, the only people in the country who I can make fun of for being dumber than us are from MS and AL.

Oh well.

now thats just ironic

He made fun of my state WAHHHHH WAHHHH WAHHH---I'm telling mom WAHHH, (sniff) (snorfle) ya big butthead, (snerkle) she'll beat your ass.

I wonder how much federal money goes to Harlem.

The guy is an idiot for saying such a cruel thing especially when the end result in favoring one state that is already getting a ton of money vs Mississippi which has been devestated. He needs to be replaced because he is too extreme and there are better Democrats that can do his job.

"I wonder how much federal money goes to Harlem."

Well, unless you have any stats, you're just throwing feces against the wall, aren't you.

What would be even more ironic is if he also invented the toothbrush shank. lol

Pickering, Pickering, that rings a bell...a tarnished bell

I am surprised there is no response from Senator Lott.....

Perhaps he doesn't want attention called to him as one of the Kings of Pork for Mississippi...

Pretty funny joke, though. Although, as a North Carolinian, the only people in the country who I can make fun of for being dumber than us are from MS and AL.

You call yourself a North Carolinian and you think WV is better than you? Shame on you, Sir. When I lived in North Carolina, making fun of WV was a treasured past-time for everyone I knew.

Well, unless you have any stats, you're just throwing feces against the wall, aren't you.

Shhhhhh... that is a treasured past-time on the DR for all political persuasions equally.

As we say in Mississippi when MS comes in 49th in some rating or another,

"Thank God for Arkansas!"

New York receives back 81 cents per dollar collected in federal taxes compared to Mississippi which collects $1.84 per dollar collected. Thus, the good folks in New York subsidize Mississippi quite heavily.

Obviously they don't because Rangel will be far more generous with Mississippi than the REpublicans before him. do you honestly believe that the Katrina victims would have been treated as they were under Democratic rule????

OOhrah, granted but the federal government is the only one with the resources to help the victims. I read this morning on NYT that, so far exactly twenty two families in NO have received grants to help rebuild.

www.nytimes.com

Don't even try to tell me that under Democrats the pace would be this slow, that the officials would exert so much energy to prevent anyone from receiving help. You can argue that you don't want to give it to them anyway, that's a different argumenth, but Rangel and the Dems would be far more generous to Louisiana and Mississippi.

Sad to see the toothbrush invention claim slip away from the Magnolia state, but be consoled: root beer was inventd in Biloxi in 1898 by Edward Adolf Barq.

But Rangel definitely has a point.

It's funny the Bushites keep trying to deflect criticism away from Dubya and His Federal Governments Failings. It MIGHT have been the fault of all 3 had there of been NO Hurricane Pam Excersize. After there was the Hurricane Pam excersize a YEAR Before the failings rest squarely with FEMA and the Federal Government. For they knew they bloody well knew a YEAR in advance that the City and State would be overwhelmed. So don't give Me ANY Poppycock

Larry

YEAH! So what(TM)! I know, it stings when your on the other end of these kinds of shots! But don't worry, a couple of years of being degraded and hummiliated will make your skin tougher! What goes around comes around and some of you people have allot more commin'! You reap what you sow and its harvest time!

Larry the point is that the Federal Government cannot be the first responder in an emergency so the state and local officials have to step up to the plate and deal with the inital mess. Afterwards the feds can help them get it done.
In this case the first responders did not do their job right then the feds screwed up their part to make one hellacious mess. No one is trying to absolve Bush for his part of Katrina, but if you want to solve a problem and not just blame you have to look at all causes not just the easiest to blame.

Let's not change the subject here. It isn't about who should have responded, who was responsible, etc. It was about Rangel's comments about Mississippi. I say Mississippi might want to comdemn Rangel but in truth he will be muck kinder to them than the REpublicans even in their own state. You can disagree with his politics, you can call him a socialist, but the folks in Mississippi will receive more aid under Democrats than they ever did under REpublicans.
And...BTW...why would anyone want to live in Mississippi. I lived there as a kid, truely hated it.

Truthfully I don't know much about MS, what I do know is that if someone were to say who the hell wants to live in NC I would be moderately upset and would proceed to list the good things about NC.

However what is most disturbing about Rangel's comments is the way that he implies that anyone who chooses to live in MS is inferior to him, if this were an isolated incident it would not be much of an issue, however it reflects the general condescending attitude of many "blue state liberals".

Tao, he did say he was sorry. Are we now going to try to pretend that Rangel really was trying to insult everyone in Mississippi?? I swear, it seems that the right can't come up with arguments to support positions any more, instead focusing on sound bites that mean virtually nothing but which they repeat on Fox, etc. to try to create division.
I think that their divisive tactics are working less and less well, Americans are finally getting wise.

How many Republicans have insulted everyone living in San Francisco????
How many southerners have insulted everyone in NYC????
How many Americans have insulted everyone in Florida???
How many Americans have insulted everyone in France???

Me thinks Mississippi has an inferiority complex.

Danni,

I do aprecate that he said he was sorry, it makes some differance and frankly I doubt a Republican in the same boat would have apologized.

However the uncensored thoughts of politicians can be very enligtining to their way of thinking. I am afraid that this is one of those cases.

SAn Franciscans should feel that the entire REpublican party hates them then.
I guarantee you I can find so many more instances of Republicans insulting San Francisco than you ever could of Democrats insulting any city or state.

Do I smeel hypocrisy.
Sniff, sniff.
Oh yes and it stinks.

My goodness, finally the government is on board with you Hippies. Taking money from the rich and giving it to the poor and you whine about that. This is what you are all about,
New York= Rich liberals
Mississippi = poor working class

Now you say it's wrong, make up your minds, As a Conservative white "redneck, I always like Charlie Wrangle, he is a straight shooter and says what he means, very rare along with Harold Ford, I would never vote for Charlie, But I might Harold,

Charlie Just showed that elitist, City attitude toward the working, poor the Dems have always had, They say they are for the poor, But they only do that because if they can get them addicted to the Federal money "needle" they know they can use that to scare them, Just like they do Latino's and Black and make them dependent on them to the point, they have to vote for them, in order to keep the money train rolling

You Dems should be all for this, they are taking form the nasty rich and helping the poor

Mississippi = poor working class

I suspect that is not the association so many people have in mind when they think "Mississippi." It has more to do with ignorance, raciscm, and the violence bred by that poisonous combination. It's a stereotype, to be sure, just like "San Francisco liberal" or "New York Jew" are stereotypes.

That is a stretch, you mean like

Bush = Lied
Runmsfeild = war criminal
Christians=fascist
republicans=homophobes
Whites=racist
Southerners=stupid

and on and on and on from the left

There is no doubt a lot of working class people live in Mississippi, perhaps Poor was a bad choice of word, How about "good, decent working folks, whom get screwed by the elisits and governement everyday, who are maligned and degraded by the elitist New York Cocktail set every day" would that be a better description. Nice try at making it sound like i was belittling my own people, People who do more hard work in a day, then most prople in New York City do in a year (opinion)

Maybe true, but Rangel doesn't represent New York. He represents Harlem which--I'm quite certain--gets more back in federal largesse in the form of AFDC, welfare benefits, Social Security, federal unemployment, the earned income credit, and so on--than almost any other district in the country. But the liberals have pulled the Republican snouts away from the trough, and now they're getting ready to plunge in theirs.

Fact is, I love Rangel, right where he is. Ditto for Conyers. They're so dumb, in what they allow to let slip from their mouths. 2/3 of his quote was just fine, in that New York needs to be getting a bigger piece of the pie vis-a-vis Mississippi. But then he had to go out of his way to insult Mississippians. I love it.

This is going to be a fun two years, and the RNC, I would hope, already have their tape machines running, building campaign commercials for '08.

By the way, I have only heard New York Jew from the anti-semitic left, And San Francisco Liberal, Well any city that would not allow a Battleship from WWII dock iit's Harbor because it is a Symbol of America's Imperial View and Militaristic mind-set. Is so Loopy, there is no help for them. So The USS IOWA goes to Stockton, Perhaps when N. Korea develops that Nuke with their missle that can reach the West Coast, they will handle that little problem for us. And San Francisco can sit around and wonder how that happened..

"That is a stretch"

That Mississippi is associated in popular culture, in our cultural memory with the stereotype of ignorance + raciscm = violence? That's a stretch?

And I said it was a stereotype.

The list you came up with is what I'd call "shorthand," not "stereotype."

Try playing it next time from something other than the "We're victims" position. That's what the righties were wailing about throughout their ascendancy and stewardship over power, which they screwed up royally.

But, then again, playing victim is so much easier than actually trying to get the act together and move along into what may be unknown, but is also the only place where progress can be made.

"By the way, I have only heard New York Jew from the anti-semitic left,"

You meed to get out and about more.

"And San Francisco Liberal, Well any city that would not allow a Battleship from WWII dock iit's Harbor because it is a Symbol of America's Imperial View and Militaristic mind-set. Are you spoofing or just plain stupid?

No victims here, Just pointing out that everytime someone does not tow the leftie line, it must be due to their bigotry , Bias or Just plain not "enlightened" enough to come over to the dark side> As for San Francisco, every action has benefits and consequences, I noticed that when the Pentagon was deciding whether or not to Move Fleet week becuase of San Francisco's Anti-military View, they sure were quick to complain, Must be all those dollars they were gonna lose from those thousands of poorly paid sailors and marines they despise so much. What a bunch of Hypocrits. San Fran is a beautiful city or was, perhaps a reality check on what the real world is like will wake them up

That Mississippi is associated in popular culture, in our cultural memory with the stereotype of ignorance + raciscm = violence? That's a stretch?

* * * * *

Probably not. What is the stereotype in popular culture of Harlem? A properous, upper-East side exurb of wealthy Wall Street types? Or a crime- and drug-infested bunch of welfare queens and crack ho's, where Father's Day is the most confusing day of the year?

Rangel should concern himself with issues closer to home. Plenty there to keep him busy.

Prosperous. Apologies.

hillbilly-Perhaps when N. Korea develops that Nuke with their missle that can reach the West Coast, they will handle that little problem for us.

Wishing for the death of innocent americans again? What a patriot you are...

YEAH! Trent Lott is "working class"? Ahahahahahahahaha! Shut up you whiny fake conservatives! You are only getting back for what you have been putting out!

When you got not ideas
sound bites give you arguments
John Kerry insulted the troops
Charlie Rangel insults Mississippi
Al Gore invented the internet
Bill Clinton did not sleep with that woman.....

but the Democrats just kicked your ass so I am guessing that sound bites alone just don't cut it any more. If Mississippi got its feelings hurt by Rangel then I suggest Mississippi ought to grow the hell up and ask the Republicans what have they done for Mississippi lately.
As always though, the REpublicans will answer....but Charlie RAngel.......

I guess the sound bite method of debate is only interesting to the morons who STILL??? listen to Fox.

HBJ (on Mississippians): "good, decent working folks, whom get screwed by the elisits and governement everyday, who are maligned and degraded by the elitist New York Cocktail set every day"

HBJ (on San Franciscans): "Perhaps when N. Korea develops that Nuke with their missle that can reach the West Coast, they will handle that little problem for us."

HBJ Conclusion: Some Americans are good, some Americans should be destroyed.

So ends the HNJ lesson on how to love America for the day.

Hans

Redneck's a genius, isn't he? He picks one Mississipppian, probably the only one he knows, and says, hmmm, he's got money, he can't be working class!!!

Let's all play this game!!! Bill Clinton is in Harlem, and Bill Clinton isn't poor. Ergo: there are no poor people in Harlem!!

Or, Charlie Rangel is from Harlem and makes $120,000 per year. Therefore, people in Harlem are rich!!!

Moron.

If Mississippi got its feelings hurt by Rangel then I suggest Mississippi ought to grow the hell up and ask the Republicans what have they done for Mississippi lately.

LOL. Believe me. More people would rather move from Harlem, New York to Mississippi than the other way around.

And, they don't have to ask what Republicans have done for Miss. According to your post, they get almost two bucks back for every one they send to Washington. Sounds to me like the gravy train's been running on schedule for quite awhile.

Mississippi is the end of the earth. I spent 2 months of my life there on a contracting job an it is the pits. Some of the most uneducated people I have ever met. They were friendly just not very bright. It is no wonder they vote republican.

"LOL. Believe me. More people would rather move from Harlem, New York to Mississippi than the other way around."

I rather doubt that! Harlem is actually pretty nice for the most part and its a 5min subway ride to Midtown. I'd still rather live in the South Bronx than Bumblefuck or Eleventoe, MS.

If Al-Queda attacked Mississippi no one would find out about it for a few months.

Nobody want to live in Mississippi with snake handlers and all. A double wide is considered living in the lap of luxury.

Too bad Lincoln didn't let the south secede. Idiot.

Well lets see, Mississippi has the lowest literacy rate in the nation, the lowest per capita outlay for students in the nation, the lowest per capita salary in the nation, the second most corrupt government behind Loiusiana, etc, etc. So it appears to me that Mr Rangals comments where very close to the mark.

They just acted that way to you, so you could understand them.

Still, who knew that Harlem was so great? I wonder how much crack costs there. I was in Harlem last month--we had to pass through twice to get to Wall Street from Hartford. Some of the buildings were nice, until you looked past, into the alleys.

No wonder Rangel wants to get his grubby mitts on some federal dollars for his district. It's obvious he's not getting a lot of help from the city or the state.

Maybe. I wonder how Mississippi's literacy rate would stack up to Harlem's? Or their high school dropout rate? Or their teen pregnancy rate? Hmmmm.

"I'd still rather live in the South Bronx than Bumblefuck or Eleventoe, MS."

Or Sixfingers, MS., Twoheads, MS., Sisterfuck, MS., or Bigotland, MS.

I like Charlie Rangel, he makes me laugh.

His remark reminds me of a fellow I worked with who was from Mississippi, and black, and I asked him if he ever thought of moving back.

"Oh, Hell no. Never going back."

I left it there.

Probably for the best. You'll never know. Maybe his ex-wife lives there, and she's a bitch. Maybe he didn't like the humidity. Maybe he was happy where he was, working with a great guy like you. Maybe his house got wiped out by Hurricane Katrina, and wanted to move away from the Gulf.

I know people from New York who moved to the South (though, I'll admit--none who moved to Mississippi). And they say they'll never go back to high taxes, high crime, high cost of living. Personally, I think I could live anywhere and be happy, as long as it's not from E. California over to West Texas. I've never understood why people choose to live in the desert, hot and nasty and dry.

Whatever floats your boat, though. I know a lot of NYC and Las Vegas residents who think it's heaven on earth. To each his own.

I agree.. Who really cares about Mississippi? What are they bringing to the table that anyone should care about? Maybe not the wisest thing to say as a politician, but the rest of America is thinking it.

What are they bringing to the table that anyone should care about?

Farm-raised catfish and hushpuppies, all you can eat.

""A lot of it was post-election Republicans saying the evil Democrats this and that and a-ha, we told you so," he said. "Mississippi sort of has an inferiority complex."

And a well deserved inferiority complex.

"Farm-raised catfish "

We can get all we want from Vietnam. Let's expel them from the union. Or at least take away one of their Senate votes.

Hey everybody, cool it about my state -- especially those left-leaners on this page that I have almost universally agreed with on nearly every issue. I'm a Democrat who lived most of my life there and I can tell you we're not perfect, but then, who is? Every state has issues.

Mississippi is a pretty state, filled with very nice people, including my family. I'm not going to rip on any other states, I'm just asking that you don't rip on mine.

Rangle spoke out of his ass. People do that. No biggie. But there are folks on this page who've written screeds about compassion and peace and understanding who are now taking cheap shots at their fellow Americans.

Shame on you.

"But there are folks on this page who've written screeds about compassion and peace and understanding who are now taking cheap shots at their fellow Americans."

Agreed, Stax:

"Maybe. I wonder how Mississippi's literacy rate would stack up to Harlem's? "

Jesus Rightisright! what's it like back there in 1976?

"who are now taking cheap shots at their fellow Americans."

Oh now I feel bad, could I send you some banjos, or a greased pig or a gift token for the waffle house to make it up to you? ;-)

Hahahaha. Funny flag for Berg.

Sorry Stax, I know what you're saying, but this country would be better if a Mississipi shaped asteriod hit Mississipi.

Have to agree with Rangel on this one...once you leave New York City, you're not really going anywhere.

New York population 19,000,000+

Mississippi population: 3,000,000.

You think he has a point?

Some people on here take the stupidity of PREJUDICE to new heights. Figure it out.
