Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

A poll released Friday by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader found a virtual deadlock; 47% of likely voters oppose the amendment, 46% support it. In this farm town of 2,000, only two of more than a dozen people interviewed said they intended to vote for the ban.

From the article:

"But South Dakota also has a live-and-let-live libertarian streak."

Indeed. This is what libertarianism is all about, live and let live and minding one's own business and not using govt force to impose our way of life on others. I hope this thing does get voted down.

All this is sort of sad. There are going to be a lot of states many years from now embarrassed when they have to amend their constitutions again.

Someday more people will realize they don't have to freak out over what other people are doing in their homes.

Those of you who disagree... just tell us all how YOU will turn gay and end YOUR marriage if gay marriage happens. If not you, tell us how your children will turn gay and end their marriages if gay marriage happens. Specifically, how? Are you that insecure that you and your children are THAT close to disaster? That seems bad. Perhaps you should seek counciling.

The closeness of the polls indicate that however the vote goes, the population of the US is changing and within 25 years all states will be in favor of fairness.
Many are too young to remember the bitterness that came from some states over integration. They got over it. Today, any politician who is openly racist is toast. The same will be true about gays, just far sooner than any of us predicted.
I mean, come on, S. DAkota is on the brink or rejecting homophobia. Halleluiah.

Talk about splitting hairs.

Pastor Brendle of Haggard's New Life Church said he sees no hypocrisy in Haggard's actions. "To my knowledge, Mike Jones has not alleged that Ted asked him to marry him... No, I do not see this instance as hypocrisy. I do see it as indiscretion, and I am grateful that Ted is repentant and humble."

A link to LA Times to tell us what they think in South Dakota. Only rcade and MDrudge could reach that far. What losers get a life.

This is a state right to define unions within their borders. Why go 1500 miles away to a bastion of homosexuality for an author with a gaypride chip on his/her shoulder???

Many are too young to remember the bitterness that came from some states over integration. They got over it.

Being a White, Southern Male who is dating a Black, Southern Female I can tell you that, no, they have not gotten over it. Some people are indifferent, some are in favor and some, like my family and hers are opposed to it.

40 years is not enough time to erase some of the anger and hatred caused by segregation and racism in the south.

My own state has an amendment coming up on tuesday. I've heard the ad's on the radio and I can't fathom just how it will adversly affect anyone by letting gays get married. Not to mention, that is marriage is such an sacred institution, why are divorce rates so high?

""I've heard the ad's on the radio and I can't fathom just how it will adversly affect anyone by letting gays get married.""

Certain types need to have a group to focus their hatred. Formerly there were many groups, Jews, Blacks, Hispanics, Pollaks, Italians, Irish....the list is shrinking and only homosexuals now are still permitted in many areas to be the focus. Even in those places expressing outright hatred is frowned upon so measures like anti-gay marriage amendments are necessary as a way to express their negative feelings.
Interesting that the same churches who most vehemently oppose gay marriage formerly were some of the same ones who opposed integration. Coincidence??? I don't think so.

"Poll: South Dakota Has Gay Marriage Jitters"

and just to think large chucks of the San Francisco and Manhattan population were about to move enmasse from their rich cosmopolitan neighbourhoods to Bumblefuck, SD too

Being a gay person myself, I have this to offer (hopefully) on the subject:

1) Prior to the whole Republican-led push to ammend the Constitution and to stir up the religious right on this subject, I had never really thought about getting married to my partner. Now I do; strange, eh?

2) Had this not been turned into a wedge issue, a lot of people who had likely been apathetic to the subject have now become polarized, i.e., there may in fact be a lot of people who really didn't think too much about gays and gays getting married, who now view us as "the enemy."

3) Again, had the issue of allowing gays to marry not been used as a political stick -- for no other reason than to garner votes; let's all agree at least on this -- gay marriage may have been allowed to quietly occur, with most of the "outraged" folks being none the wiser, and of course, unaffected by it as they remain today (were it not for their "spiritual" leaders and politicians working them up into a panicked frenzy).

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- Evangelical pastor Ted Haggard confessed on Sunday to a "lifelong" sexual problem, and said he was "a deceiver and a liar," in a letter read to his New Life Church.

"There is part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I have been warring against it all my life," he said in the letter.

Haggard apologized to his congregation and asked for their forgiveness in the letter read by pastor Larry Stockstill, a member of the board of overseers of New Life Church.

On Saturday, the board ousted Haggard from the 14,000-member church, which he founded more than 20 years ago, citing his "sexually immoral conduct."

Haggard had previously admitted that he bought methamphetamine and got a massage from Mike Jones, a former prostitute. Jones said the prominent pastor had paid him for sex over a three-year period.

Haggard, in an interview with CNN affiliate KUSA denied having sex with Jones and said he did not use the drug and threw it away.

In the letter read Sunday, Haggard took responsibility for his actions, saying "I am guilty of sexual immorality" and noted that "the things I did opened the door for additional allegations."

He asked the congregation to also forgive his accuser, who Haggard said has revealed "the deception ... that was in my life."

In a separate letter from Haggard's wife, also read by Stockstill, Gayle Haggard said while her heart is broken, she remains "committed to him until death do us part."

An overflow congregation responded to the announcement with a standing ovation.

Haggard, 50, and his wife have five children.

South Dakota has Gay Marriage Jitters......Rush Limbaugh says they are faking.

"There is part of my life that is so repulsive and dark "

The "repulsive and dark" part is he allowed himself to be hoodwinked into believing his God-given tendencies were wrong.

There is no "repulsive and dark",
except for thinking it is so.

Apologies to Shakespeare.

I'm still trying to figure out how two men or two women getting married is supposed to somehow affect MY marriage.
Does it automatically make mine invalid? Does it mean I have to divorce her and marry a man? Even if I don't want to?

Does it mean that the children(all adults now)-That we raised BEFORE we met-are going to turn gay? Does it mean my Siblings are now gay? And since my Siblings are only half-related to me by blood-does that mean they'll be bi-sexual instead?
Even my wife-as tolerant as she is of my rants-gets exasperated when I start talking like this.
It doesn't matter to me who gets married and who doesn't. The Evangelicals are manipulating this for personal gain-nothing more. And the politicians are right there with them-sucking their dicks for their votes.
God-what incredible irony-and hypocrisy. The reich-wingers TALK about freedom and Democracy-but their plans for a "permanent GOP Majority"-proves they want nothing to do with either.

Gay marriage threatens heterosexual marriage because when gay couples marry, buy a home and settle down the straight couple's homes down the street begin looking a bit shabby. Wives get jealous of the husbands of their gay friends because they look better, dress better, act better, etc. Gay marriage threatens straight marriage because of jealousy.

" the straight couple's homes down the street begin looking a bit shabby "

ROFL!!

funny flag

See what that damn Brokeback Mountain movie did! Jeff Gannon said this would be a problem!

Shrub

Yeah - it's an interesting tact - the TFR has been telling pro-choicers to take it to the voters and they might be eating their words.
It would actually surprise a lot of people in a lot of states.

Gay marriage threatens straight marriage because of jealousy.

Interesting. I never thought of that. I second Data's funny flag.

No eva, you probably didnt think to marry your partner because marriage is not apart of gay culture. Its just another bullshit issue that was cooked up by a gaggle of litigators who wanted to tap into gay money. And now its backfired to the point that the CONSTITUTIONS over over half the states are being changed to eliminate the possibility that this ridiculous charade proceed any further.

Why does gay marriage threaten straight marriage? Because the concept of cheap, easy sex is playing to the trend. Americans have turned their back on morality. We have no endurance, no conviction, and homosexuality is the epitome of such.

Its the rectum stupid.

How do you expect the country to sustain itself if we place sterile man-man or woman-woman relationships are the norm?

The point you OUGHT to worried is when someone actually stands up to this absolutely sick insanity and proposes banning the destructive, weak, and fruitless concept of "homosexuality" from the airwaves, public square, and print. Keep up the good work and thats what you will get.

Cognitive Dissonance has metastasized into Reality Impairment.

AmericanPly-you REALLY need the inside of your head scraped out-all that plaque that's built up is interfering with your thought processes.

Gay marraige is no threat to anyone.

As far as the "sterile" marraige concept goes-My wife and I are BOTH sterile-are you saying WE don't have a valid marriage?

Ply(wood), Okay, I get it, you hate gay people. I was sincerely hoping for a somewhat more reasonable discourse than your prehistoric ramblilngs.

AmericanPly-since you pulled that bullshit statement out of your ass-do you have a fleet of Airbus 380s in there too?

What makes you think they're going to be the norm? Is that what flush rimjob told you? Or was it Gee-Whiz Gordon Felon?
Where do you guys get this crap from? Two people love each other and want to spend their lives together-why is that wrong? Because of the Sex? I have engaged in that with my wife-does that invalidate my marriage? What I and my wife do in our home is no one's business but ours. As long as we are breaking no laws-the Government can stay the hell out of it.
The sexual practices of gay and lesbian couples is of no more concern to me than yours are-why should they be of concern to you?
Because of a book that was written over a period of 5000 years? Are you insane?
Let me ask this-Are you Jewish? Or Christian? If Jewish-Don't expect myself or anyone else to follow your beliefs-you are entitled to them-but don't expect to force them on me. I will not tolerate it.
If you're a Christian-I'd like to point something out to you.
My wife and I had this discussion a while back-the ONLY passages in the Bible she could find to back up the stance was in the Old testament. The Old Testament is actually the Jewish Torah. Why are the religious leanings of a different religion being pushed by the Evangelical
CHRISTIANS?
If they truly are Christians-why are they pushing Jewish religious writings to effect an American Election?
And why aren't you ashamed of beating up any fellow Christians for NOT following the Jewish faith?

I will worry if someone's arm falls off or they drop dead one they realize gay people are married. Unless I'm extreme in my religious beliefs, I don't care who gets married to whom

Eva-
Your 1056AM post was good. Barney Frank, initially at least (I don't know his current thoughts), was not in favor of a gay marriage law. He saw the "us vs them" battle that it would bring out and didn't want that fight.

I don't know how the South Dakota vote will turn out. However, what people tell a pollster (in order to sound more caring) may differ from the choice a voter makes at the poll when no one is watching.

It wouldn't surprise me to see America gradually move more toward civil unions, if not full blown marriage over time. How far left and how quickly? Don't know.

But I don't equate homosexuality with race or gender bias. If I were gay I'm sure I'd feel differently.
