God bless our soldiers.

Excellent read. Glad to see it posted.

Biggest Hassle -- High-ranking visitors. More disruptive to work than a rocket attack. VIPs demand briefs and "battlefield" tours (we take them to quiet sections of Fallujah, which is plenty scary for them). Our briefs and commentary seem to have no affect on their preconceived notions of what's going on in Iraq. Their trips allow them to say that they've been to Fallujah, which gives them an unfortunate degree of credibility in perpetuating their fantasies about the insurgency here. Biggest Outrage -- Practically anything said by talking heads on TV about the war in Iraq, not that I get to watch much TV. Their thoughts are consistently both grossly simplistic and politically slanted. Biggest Offender: Bill O'Reilly.

INJURED SOLDIERS IN TANK IN FALLUJAH, IRAQ - APRIL 10, 2004

from the article

...Their thoughts are consistently both grossly simplistic and politically slanted. Biggest Offender: Bill O'Reilly.

Hmmmmm, Fox News' Bill O'Reilly or our Bill O'Reilly? :)

Rcade, my original headline was more direct and to the point. I know Zap posted the same story earlier and I had overlooked it, but I think Iraq: Hell on Earth is a more apt title and should not be deleted.

great story of how brave our troops are. It saddens me fools in Washington are mismanaging the lives of our soldiers so badly. I fear that nothing good will ever come out of this except a few haliburton execs will get rich and we will lose far to many lives just so they can line their pockets.

How long before the mouth breathers try to swift boat this guy?

Almost immediately, I'll bet. It'll be interesting to see how someone like O'Reilly reports this. (He's "seen" combat you know.)

Biggest Offender: Bill O'Reilly.
Hahahaha
Straight from the frontline, Oh'Really.
You have been told to just shut up.
Now it is time for Oh'Really and the rest of these rightwing pustual warts to fade into oblivion.

The only "combat" O'Reilly has seen is with his conscience . . . and damn little of that from what I read.

Also, I don't think jacking off to phone sex is classified as "combat."

But who knows . . . maybe it is in O'Reilly's world.

Well He is stroking a "Helmet" while He does Phone Sex so it's close I guess.

THIS IS MY RIFLE
THIS IS MY GUN
THIS ONE'S FOR FIGHTING
THE ONE'S FOR FUN

Oh Really is the type of guy who would sell out American lives for ratings, total dirtbag.

Politics aside, our troops should be treated as heros. Our country has asked them to do an almost impossible job and they are trying to do it. WHEN we leave Iraq and many leave the service I hope that their service is rewarded with good jobs, the ability to purchase homes, educations, etc. It shouldn't be a partisan issue to want them to be treated as well as veterans from previous wars. Win or lose in Iraq our troops did their best and deserve to be treated as the heros they really are.

I agree Danni, but I don't think it will happen.
This war will fade into the past just like Viet Nam, and nothing will change.
Did you read in the letter where he said the guy that defuses bombs is being paid less than gagbage men back home?
Sadly these people won't be compensated or for that matter recognized for their efforts.
When this war is over(and I hope soon) the American people are going to try and forget it as quick as possible.

BTW,
I have (non-wartime) VA benifits from the Viet Nam era.
They don't amount to very much.
I'm sure wartime benifits are a little better but not much.

Much as some would like to forget as soon as possible, it just won't happen. The Pentagon has been using depleted uranium munitions for years there now, the birth defects and deformities of young babies is just horrible to see. What is going to happen to all the soldiers who have been exposed? Gulf War Syndrome has been linked to DU. America will still be fighting this war long after it is over.

"Gulf War Syndrome has been linked to DU."

Gulf war syndrome is a myth.

Gulf War Syndrome is, most likely, an unfortunate bi-product of a combination of things.

1. Tremendous media hype surrounding the threat of chemical and biological weapons during the First Gulf War.
2. The litigious nature of our society.
3. The fact that the United States Government is a target for litigation with very deep pockets, and
4. Those with anti-war sentiments would like to discredit and defame the United States and the global war on terror.

"The Pentagon has been using depleted uranium munitions for years"

True
At Ivy Mike the DU fissioned, much to the surprise of some, making the bomb bigger than was expected (by some).

www.youtube.com

Thanks for the Ivy Mike video, Data. First time I've seen it though I've seen photos of that Jupiter-looking semicircle before.

I think the other side of the depleted uranium argument deserves airing. Something caused all those Gulf War illnesses, DU or not. A rather chilling observation on Paul Wellstone's death half way down.

www.newswithviews.com

Wellstone was killed by an incompetent pilot. He stalled that King Air on approach. Normal approach speed is 120 knots, he was flying at low 80's, near stall speed; The man had no business flying that airplane.

DU is toxic, just like all the other heavy metals, lead for example.

The patriotism and interpersonal loyalty of soldiers in a danger zone is a given, regardless of the decade or the war.
Their nobility in contrast to GWBs criminal indifference, ambition and incompetence are disturbing. That our purest and bravest are laying their lives down for the most corrupt and cowardly administration in US history is sickening. Bring the troops home. Prosecute and execute Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice.

Gulf war syndrome is a myth (etc)

DATA

DATA, my father in law was a retired Colonel, who served in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam.

He passed away from multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. The VA, who for years discounted diseases caused by exposure to agent orange, changed their tune in the late 1990's, and now has a list of dozens of conditions later proven to be caused by such exposure.

Proof that the military has, and will, deny culpability for diseases and death caused by their own agents. PS He never sued. He just died and was buried with full military honors.

AllAmerican
My father was a Colonel, WWII, Korea.
He died of lung cancer because of the damn Lucky Strikes. And I'm not defending the military, I know their record; A lot of guys who were exposed to nukes got sick. My father in law was Air Force, worked on the "Wet Bomb" at Sandia; was at the last above ground test in Nevada. He just turned 85 and is in perfect health.

Danni -- Yes the soldiers over there are heroic, many of those serving in combat areas and others just for trying so damn hard. But I know of bunches of willing, overly conservative officers who drank the Kool-Aid more than eagerly after it was served by the PNAC propaganda machine. Some thought that Bill Clinton was evil incarnate and that W was the poster child for bravery and morality. Some of these same misguided should believed that Cheney knew more than the CIA and intel specialists and they believed that the country was blesses to have Cheney, Rumsfeld, Dubya and the rest of the neocons in control. They were the thought-police against anyone who suggested that there might be a problem in buying the propaganda from the administration. Some of these ultra-conservative military members have far too much cognitive dissonance to accept anything than what DOD is feeding them. Clearly, this is dangerous.

Neocon dickhead politicians could never have engineered the mess in Iraq without the help of neocon dickhead military officers supporting it all the way.
