Tou may have read about the Chicago city council passing a living wage law for the empoyees of 'Big Box Stores'. The cry webt up that it would hurt jobs, and the stores would move out of the city.

Well good old Mayor Daley vetoed the law, and Wal-Mart has opened a new store on the south side.

So all those great jobs don't add up to much, just more exploited workers.

And, something else that never gets talked about... the city streets can't handle the traffic around these Big Box shopping centers. On any given weekend, it's complete gridlock anywhere around these stores.

Just one more reason not to shop at Wal-Mart.

I worked at WalMart years and years ago. I was the Head Customer Service Manager and I can tell you, if your employees say that about their hours, the manager making out schedules, is not doing a good job.

I had over 60 people to schedule for and I still managed to give them their requested days off, the number of hours they were hired to work for and rotated weekends off.

Part time employees are usually more flexable, which made it easier to fit the peak times throughout the day.

However, this increase of part time employees over full timers appears to be a benefit from a business standpoint only. Less money paid for benefits.

Hiring more part time employees would work in my area because it is a college city, giving an opportunity for more students to work a job fit to their school schedule, but it will eliminate the people who must work full time to help support their families.

This plan of WalMart's is not going to help the majority of people.

Actually, I hope it backfires on them.

So easy for you to say... you realize some people just are not cut-out for college? What do they do instead? Well, since manufacturing is out of the question, its the service industry. Since shop/mechanics classes are cut out of most highschool curriculums, how has the average highschool graduate been taught to do ANYTHING but customer service/register-jockey type jobs? Technical schools can be as expensive as universities....

Highschool is all about testing and college prep. now, with a magnet school here and there for agricultural/mechanical, but those are very rare (even in S. Florida, I know theres a couple but I can't name them), and very over-enrolled.

People SHOULD be able to live off of being a janitor, stockperson, register-jockey.... and Walmart and other bigbox stores (target, kmart, etc.) make enough profit for that to be so. Its honest work, its hard work, and even if YOU don't value that work, it has a value and one as a society we should consider as worthy of a LIVING wage.

Is that the definition of socialism... or just common sense? Are people and their lives so disposable now, that we give 'em slave wages w/o health care, and if they die or get sick, just replace them with one of the other 6 applicants?

They pay for their services. In the 80's I knew a few college kids at a school I was attending worked at UPS at not getting the trucks ready for the morning delivery. They made 15 to 18 dollars an hour.

In this military, I have went from E-1 to CPT in 12 years. ALL of it has been earned. Some people wouldnt have taken advantage of the college being paid for by the military. I did. I earned two BA degrees while I was enlisted. I could have gotten out when I graduated. Become a systems engineer for a contractor. But instead, I went to OCS, which by the way was EARNED as well, as I had to qualify for it. As you can see, I have been given NOTHING during this career. And if you feel that I dont deserve the minimal benefits our country gives me for risking my life instead of sitting behind a keyboard trading insults at those who defend my freedom....you are smaller than I thought.

Also, most jobs offer college payback for most employees. It's just most employees dont have the attention span to go to college and EARN one...
