Shimkus is toast. There's even video of Shimkus letting Foley talk to the pages AFTER the GOP knew Foley had page-issues.

You'll recall that he is the Republican member of Congress who runs the Page Board, the group in charge of the pages. You'll also recall that tonight we learned on ABC News that GOP House staff warned the page class of 2001-2002 to stay away from ex-Rep. Mark Foley.

Then why is it that on June 6, 2002, well after the kids were warned to stay away from Foley, Shimkus notes approvingly that Foley has spent a lot of time with the Page Class of 2001-2002? This is Shimkus speaking at the page's goodbye ceremony,

MR. SHIMKUS: I thank my colleague. Now someone who spends a lot of time with you also, the gentleman from Florida (Mr. Foley), would like to say a thank you.
(Note: We've confirmed in the Congressional Record that this is the exact transcript of the proceedings that day.)

The GOP staff knew Foley was a problem the year before, they warned the pages in 2001. Yet Shimkus, the next year is acknowledging that Foley was still permitted to spend "a lot of time" with the pages. In the name of God, why?

Foley then gets up in front of Shimkus and tells a special little story of how he took one male page to a private dinner in downtown Washington, DC. Put the page in his BMW and "cruised" - Foley's word - to dinner.

Foley told the kid he had to get permission from his mom and he had to notify the Clerk of the House, Jeff Trandahl, the Republican staffer who works for Republican Speaker of the House Denny Hastert (R-IL). You'll also recall that Trandahl is the Clerk who joined Shimkus in 2005 to talk to Foley about the creepy email exchange with the first child who got this scandal started.

Why did Shimkus let Foley spend so much time with the pages after GOP staff already knew Foley had a "page problem"? Did the Clerk of the House approve of this dinner? Did Shimkus? Clearly Foley had no fear in the kid going to Clerk and asking for permission - so Foley seemed to think the Clerk wouldn't mind. And clearly Foley had no fear in telling the story in front of Shimkus, so he obviously didn't think Shimkus would mind either.

Shimkus then introduces Foley. Read what Foley has to say to the pages of the 2001-2002 class in his speech wishing them goodbye.

FOLEY: John [one of the pages] was the highest bidder on lunch with Mark Foley. Maybe you all do not know this story, but John had paid considerable sums to dine with me. I had offered to take the winning bidder to lunch in the Members' dining room. Then I heard how much John Eunice paid. And I said, ``John, there is no way in the world after you committed so much money to have lunch with me that I would dare take you downstairs to eat in the Members' dining room.'' I said, ``Where do you want to go?'' He says, without reservation, ``Morton's.'' I said, ``Morton's? Like in Morton's Steakhouse?'' He said, ``Oh, would that be too much?'' I said, ``Oh, no, we'll go.'' I said, ``Call your mother, get permission, make sure she notifies the Clerk and we will go to Morton's.'' And so we proceeded to cruise down in my BMW to Morton's."

Putting aside the creepy notion of children bidding on dinner with an already-suspected child sex predator, what in God's name were Shimkus and the Clerk doing approving of Foley taking a kid in his BMW to a private dinner in downtown Washington? The GOP staff already knew that Foley was trouble. They had already warned the kids. Yet Shimkus let Foley spend lots of time with the kids, by Shimkus' own admission. And then they let Foley cruise the kid to dinner in his beamer.

Shimkus is toast.

After a while a talking point will be released that it wasn't all that bad, just kidding around and being overly friendly. It doesn't matter how graphic the facts really are. If no more damning evidence comes out, someday in the future, you will commonly hear people say it wasn't all that bad. Just wait.

Hastert and the Rethugs have refused to investigate the 8 billion missing in Iraq, Haliburton, lots of other corrupt situations. Is it any surprise they turned a blind eye to Foley. Makes me wonder what other scandals are lurking behind the curtain of Republican corruption that are known by the leadership who are covering up. I first heard about this story on MSNBC. They read a few innocuous exchanges from the emails, and I couldn't understand why Foley had resigned. Anyone who reads the full exchanges understands. Foley may have a drinking problem, but that has nothing to do with the fact that he is a pedophile. Most alcoholics don't molest children. Foley didn't sound particularly drunk in the emails. He knew exactly what he was doing, continually steering the conversation in the direction he wanted it to go.

The Republicans appear to have been covering here. They deserve whatever they get.

Fat Pig Hastert is retiring this year from the House of Representatives. His seat is up for grabs right now. Some jerk from the repulsican side of the Illinois state leg named Peter Roskam is running against a decorated Iraq war veteran who lost both her legs when her BlackHawk helicopter was shot down by enemy fire. Roskam was actually stupid enough this weekend to repeat Shrub's insult about 'cutting and running' which gave Ms. Duckworth more than ample fodder for her campaign. These repulsicans just can't seem to open their mouths lately without inserting both feet.

Hastert and all the other represenatives are, I believe, Mandated Reporters. Which means, if Hastert and his cronies failed to report this to the proper authorities as soon as they knew about it, they could very well be in violation of laws themselves. I would like to apologize and express my opinion to everyone on DR. I stated the other day that after reading the Foley email information... that I didn't see anything wrong with the email. I even stated that asking for a picture was explained by him, as something the office requested to have on file and that I thought that was a reasonable explanation. After further releases of the Instant Messages, I totally condemn Foley and his ilk. The activity and behavior is despicable and demands condemnation.

It is really ridiculous for the right nuts to accuse Democrats of politicizing this when Hastert's GOP has made this a partisan concern from Day One. To wit:

- By excluding the lone Democrat on the Page Board from their most recent decisions and announcement on reforms they are undertaking;

- When he was first apprised of the "improper contact" Rep. Shimkus went first to Reynolds, the GOP re-election campaign honcho, not the Page Board or Congresstional Ethics chairs, to discuss the Foley matter;

- When Rep. Shimkus did his "investigation" of Foley, he kept the Democrat member in the dark and in fact the Page Board never dealt with the issue officially;

Only now, when the media has blown the lid off, does Hastert and his cronies come out like Elliot Ness on steroids.

Hastert is a liar and a disgrace and I don't see how anyone can defend him. His first response was that he first found out last week. Then, the next day he is contradicted by Reynolds and issues a revised statement not admitting he knew, but saying he had no reason to disbelieve Reynolds.

If Hastert didn't lie, you have to believe that reports of improper conduct toward House pages by Foley - the Deputy Republican House Whip - were of such little consequence to him that he basically forgot all about them.

Which is worse? Covering up for Foley, or not even thinking this was serious enough to remember it in the first place?

There is a big problem with the GOP House Leader right here and now in 2006.

Here is the rightnut dilemna in a nutshell.

There is only a little more than a month before the mid-term elections, so they cannot wait to try and spin this...BUT

It is becoming clear the NO ONE knows the full extent of this. So you have people like Tony Snowjob talking about "naughty emails" one day, only to get blind-sided a few hours later when the next round of emails becomes public showing Foley trying to cadge sexual rendevous wit children.

As disgusting as it sounds, the only strategy NOT susceptible to the drip-drip of new information is the one Matt Drudge and apparently a rightnut fringe have chosen, which is to: 1) argue the kids are not really kids (e.g. age of consent in DC is 16) and 2) argue the so-called kids lured "poor Foley" on.

This is madness. But once you get past that, it also won't work either, for one very simple reason.

The Page program is generally peopled by kids whose parents have connections. Working as a Page is viewed as a real plum job, opening up all sorts of opportunities. So these tend to be the kids of the wealthy and powerful. Since we have a GOP majority house, most of the children are the kids of well-connected Republicans.

Can you imagine a strategy like Matt Drudge's that is more likely to piss off your own side? He is basically telling the Republican parents their kids had it coming.
