Just goes to show there is no such thing as luck.

Now she's only making $100,000 a year. Maybe 120 grand with her deli job. She is now middle class..

When the dems get in office, she will have to pay 50% in taxes. Since she is now considered rich, someone has to pay for a socialist utopia..

"she will have to pay 50% in taxes...."

What a joke. This lady still isn't in the right income bracket to get any real value from Bush's tax cuts.

You think six figures is MIDDLE CLASS? Come down to my part of the world, fellow, and see how real people live.

You know, this makes me a bit ire. Maybe a bit of "socialist utopia" is in order here.

An average wage in Texas was $36,248 per year in 2002, it seems.

"she will have to pay 50% in taxes...."

Federal tax rate on $100,000 is 28% for a single filer, 25% for married filing jointly.

Yet another inconvenient truth.

Why do facts hate America?

Are there state or local taxes on those winnings?

Lottery winnings of $600.01 and over are subject to Federal Withholding tax. For winnings of $600.01, up to and including $5,000, you will be issued a W-2G form to report your winnings on your federal income tax form. For winnings of $5,000.01 and over, your state's Department of Revenue removes the 25 percent federal withholding before you receive your winnings check (or, if it is an annuity, from each winnings check). You then receive a W-2G form with each check to submit with your 1040 form to show that the 25 percent federal withholding already has been paid. In addition to federal tax, your state will make additional withholdings for taxes, and most states will deduct other money that you may owe to the state, such as back taxes, child support, loan payments, etc.

The state tax withholdings are as follows:

California - No state tax on lottery prizes
Georgia - 6% state income tax
Illinois - 3% state income tax
Maryland - 7.5% state tax (Maryland residents), 5% state tax (non-Maryland residents)
Massachusetts - 5% state income tax
Michigan - 3.9% state income tax
New Jersey - No state tax on lottery prizes
New York - 6.85% state income tax
Ohio - 3.5% state income tax
Texas - No state tax on lottery prizes
Virginia - 4% state income tax
Washington - No state tax on lottery prizes

yay for California!

Happy for her.

The funny thing about random stuff; it's random. There is absolutely no reason she can't win ten times in a row.

The two areas of mathematics that have brought me the most pleasure are quantum mechanics and chaos theory. Before that it was classical electrodynamics, but that was all done in the 19th century.

classical electrodynamics

e- is my hero.

I hear all the Republifundies are trying to turn her over to Al Qaeda since they heard her name was Valerie Wilson.

Turns out Osama had no use for her: this one doesn't work for the CIA.

Just remember the Randian battlecry of the conservatives:
"Anything for Money!!"

"e- is my hero."

Since you used a computer to post that, it must be true.
;*O

"but that was all done in the 19th century"

Actually some of the most beautiful related mathematics was mid-20th. My bad.

The odds of her hitting both was 1 in 3.6 trillion!

Somebody in my fishing club won twice. 12 million the first time, 2 million the second time.

Another funny win was Hollywood Henderson, the Dallas inyour face Cowboy who was hated by coach Laundry. Hollywood went to rehab and completely turned himself around. He was so moved ny his former coach, he said the eulogy at Laundry's funeral.

1 month later he hit the lottery for 25 million dollars

Cmon people, I was only playing about the taxes part...

Geez....lighten up

classic line when people get caught...

"I was joking".

"I was only teasing"

"Can't YOU take a joke"

"Where's your sense of humor?"

"Lighten up"

Boaz...I'm weary of people who attack, get caught and then try to turn themselves into a victim.

people who attack, get caught and then try to turn themselves into a victim.

That summarizes the entire "conservative movement".

Xtian's too.

It's Americans that hate facts. Stupid facts.

CALIFCHRIS:
A small modification to add to your list of states and tax responsibilities. If you win a lottery prize in NJ that is a NJ Lottery game, you don't get taxed on that. But if I cross the border into PA (which I would always advise against) and buy their lottery tickets and win, NJ will tax you on the winnings.
