Sep. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Gasoline prices across the U.S. are likely to fall this month as demand from motorists slows and the threat of supply disruptions from hurricanes diminishes. [Bloomberg]

Make it 99 and we'll talk

Shrub is bringing down the price with his never ending fight for freedom. It all makes sense now. No wonder he has been so cocksure. While talking when his mouth is full, and giving backrubs to unhappy europe people he is sucking the oil from Osama Been Laughing's geyser and the part that drips off his chin lands on New Orleans and turns it into the Emerald City and the Wizard of Rummy lives next door to Santa Condi and then we get pizza.

In Tucson, I have been paying 2.85 a gallon for 91 octane for over a month. Im pretty happy...

I will believe it, when I see it.....

Guys it is not OPEC this time. The president of OPEC already explained he did not like gas prices being so high because it drives people to look for alternative fuel. The issue is the American and British multinational companies fixing the prices at the pump. Obviously it IS rigging pump prices because now they are bringing the prices down AND It IS LABOR DAY WEEKEND. Prices ALWAYS go up on a DRIVING Holiday.

Don't fool yourself Spitts, OPEC DOES set the price for a barrel of oil. When they say they would prefer it to not be as high, it comes with a wink!

If you look at the price of oil over time, there have always been boom/busts in price. It's very cyclical, and if the world economies slow down, and demand drops just 2 to 3 %, that little bit of excess capacity drives oil and gas prices lower. And that is true regionally as well.

If everybody in the US needed to fill up there gas tanks at once, there would not be enough gasoline in gas stations tanks to fulfill demand. If the stations and refineries load up to meet an expected spike in demand (ie laborday wwekend drivers) and the demand fizzles due to bad weather....the price drops.

It's funny how very few people remember the simple economic theory of supply and demand.

Let's See The November Elections Are Coming Up And Cheney Still Has Not Let Anyone In On His Secret Meeting Will The Oil Company CEOs.

Gas Prices Fall Even Though Iran Refuses UN Orders And The Storm Season Has It's First Set of Major Storms ?

Spitts,

you are 100% correct and I spent 5 years stationed in Alaska and know how US Oil becomes more profitable when Oil prices are high.

Also gues which companies were against Our Enemy Chavez's Universal Oil Standard $50.00 A Barrel ?

sure: with mid-terms elections coming up, the prices will fall so that the oil companies can maintain their grip

sure: with mid-terms elections coming up, the prices will fall so that the oil companies can maintain their grip

Not exactly, with midterm elections coming up, prices are falling so Republicans can maintain their grip. I don't recall the exact number, but something like 3/4 of the oil deposits in this world are nationalized. The majors have little influence on price fluctuations.

Here in Southern California most people would be surprised and thrilled if the price of gasoline dropped to $3.00 a gallon.

"Oil production at BP's Prudhoe Bay oilfield in Alaska, already running at half capacity due to pipeline corrosion, is being cut by another 90,000 barrels per day for several days due to a technical fault.

"A company spokesman said Wednesday output at the biggest oilfield in the United States had been reduced to 110,000 barrels per day after a natural gas compressor in Gathering Center 2 failed."

...............

"BP had originally planned for 400,000 barrels of oil a day to be off line for several months, and as a result had place orders to supply its West Coast refineries, where most of Prudhoe's crude is shipped, with supplies from Asia and other places.

"Traders were closely watching inventory reports for signs of a supply problem, but have so far seen few signs of a major disruption.

"(They) are remaining quite healthy despite the problems in Prudhoe Bay," said Bob Yawger, an oil broker at Man Financial in New York. "And it doesn't seem like (the recent shutdown) will be too long lasting."

"Prudhoe Bay had previously been pumping about 200,000 bpd, around half its normal output, after serious corrosion in a pipeline led BP to shut down the eastern half of the field earlier this month.

I guess BP got the pipeline fixed huh?

LOL

I just drove from Los Angeles to Sacramento. The cheapest gas I saw on US5 was $2.95 a gallon at an Arco. Chevron regular unleaded was at $3.25 and $3.29.
My paranoia leads me to believe that the red states get cheaper gas than blue states.

In Jersey my local Exxon sells at $2.75. Gas taxes are relatively cheap.

"I just drove from Los Angeles to Sacramento. "

You poor thing. You have our sympathy.

"1. 90% of the world's oil reserves are controlled by government entities (national oil companies such as Aramco). Private companies such as Exxon Mobil only control 10% of the world's oil reserves.
2. Aside from the cost of oil itself, the next biggest part of the cost is taxes. People rail about private oil company profits (The average net profit for a company is 9 cents on the dollar) yet taxes dwarf that figure. Taxes embedded in the price of gasoline, for example, range from 24-52 cents on the dollar (depending on what state, etc.).
3. We get gasoline from refined oil. Yet we didn't build a single oil & gas refinery in the United States during the past 25 years due to government regulations, mandates and outright bans. These restrictions greatly limited the supply of gasoline as consumer &industrial demand continued to soar."

In 1999 I Paid $.79 A Gallon And Did Not Think A Damn bit About Taxes. They Have Not Risen Since But I Just Paid $3.25 A Gallon So Who Is Making The Profit Now ?

Voodoo Economics At Work, Right ?

Ray

Oil companies appear to have zero interest in building new facilities. Just as they appear to have zero interest in maintaining the facilities they have now. You cannot blame it all on environmentalists and government regulation.

Except that it is convenient for you to do so.

I would agree with that. Gas in Quartzsite,AZ, two hours from anywhere, is 45 cents cheaper than in Torrance, CA next door to the refinery. And no, taxes alone are not the difference. Same for Brookings, OR, 2 1/2 hours from the nearest interstate.

The Red States:

1. Fatter By Far

2. Lower IQs By Far

3. Lower Gas Prices By Far

4. Voted For Bush By Far

They Are Fat Dumb And Happy !!!

Funny how smart some people think they are? And those same people can be led just like a Bull with a ring in his nose. I am laughing so inside but in reality this is so sad. Sorry your ox was gored. But did you have to put him down from just a superficial wound? And of course you cannot understand. The more intelligent someone believes they are the more arrogant they become and the more their lack of intelligent actually is exposed. It is so easy to talk down to people you believe are below you and all you really accomplish is completing the fool.

What in the world was this about? Bizarre.

Oil companies are profit seeking enterprises. I guess in your book it's their fault that they can't build a refinery in this country without losing money.

How could a company possibly lose money refining oil? It is a little hard to believe that refining the most in-demand commodity today is not profitable.

The CATO institute did a very good analysis on why no refineries have been built. The environmental and regulatory costs were minimal compared to the total cost of the refinery.

They noted that the way to control prices most effectively was by controlling the number of refineries.

This is not the article I was referring, but it is still a good one. Yes, it's CATO.

Ray,

Do yourself a favor. Read the above out loud.

See how stupid it sounds?

it is my understanding that the environmental wackos have been able to get so many things attatched to building a refinary that it is not cost effective...is that correct ....

and even though there has really only been a hint at the charge that bush is now telling the oil companies or at least that they are in cahoots....but not a one of you brainiacs has bothered to mention just how he is able to do that.....that is pure nonsense.......

filled up yesterday at 2.46.......but remember that not far from here is miles of refinaries that could blow at any moment and is prime target area for terrorists......and the air in some places is pretty thick.....we SHOULD pay less because of some of that.......

Are all the refineries back on line in LA?

How did we meet the demand for gas with so much damage?

The prices went up - but somehow we had enough refined petroleum, even with the cost of Crude going up due to whatever the cause.

and of course there is supply and demand.....how many years now has the price gone down at and after labor day?
just about every year....isnt that right?

It has been, since about the middle of last week, at least in Northern Orange Co. it has been selling for under $3.00 a gallon (I paid $2.959 in Cypress yesterday morning).

I can see how stupid Ted Baxter sounds. Why the fuck should the majors build a refinery in this country when they can do it in somewhere else at less cost?
