Another Republican announced a write-in campaign for former Rep. Tom DeLay's congressional seat, the Houston Chronicle reports. Houston City Council member Shelley Sekula-Gibbs (R) joins Sugar Land mayor David Wallace (R) who also wants the Republican party to back his write-in effort. "Mounting a successful write-in candidacy will be difficult, Republicans acknowledge, and some say it amounts to ceding the race to Democratic nominee Nick Lampson. No write-in candidate has ever won a House race in Texas, dating back to 1846 when Texas became a state, according to Congressional Quarterly's Guide to U.S. Elections." CQ Politics notes the news "puts the Republicans in a deep quandary. Despite the districts typically strong Republican leanings, the GOP faces a very difficult challenge to defeat the strong takeover bid by Democratic former Rep. Nick Lampson with a write-in campaign, even if just one strong Republican candidate is running. Bids by more than one strong contender likely would split the write-in vote and render the partys effort futile." [Political Wire]
