Former basketball star Charles Barkley says he's switched political teams from Republican to Democrat and is again talking about running for governor in his home state, possibly in 2010. "I really believe I was put on Earth to do more than play... [San Francisco Chronicle]

Alabama politics is never boring. Now that we've gotten through Siegelman's trial and conviction, and a primary campaign b/n Riley & the Ten Commandments judge, time to inject some more excitement.

Oh, I know! How about a guy who hasn't lived here for years coming back because he played basketball here for awhile, to try to buy the governorship after switching parties because he knows that African Americans will vote for other African Americans as long as they're Dems?

Sounds like a fun '10.

George Wallace?

Charles Barkley?

The Round Mound of Rebound fer Gov?

Why the Hell Not? (to steal a Kinky-ism)

Self-made man running for office rather than a 4th generation politician.....sounds fine with me....I don't care which party.

He thinks the republicans have lost their minds.......I can see that. Question is..why has he been a republican all along until now? Unfortunately for the libs the answer is that he is basically conservative at heart. I don't see this guy embraced by the left very much as a result.

This clown hasnt got a chance in hell. this is more posturing from the mouth who doesnt have a ring. All talk , no perfomance

"This clown hasnt got a chance in hell."

Heard people say the same thing about arnold schwarzennegger. Soon our entire country will be run by celebrity governors and rich, know-nothing senators.

((celebrity governors and rich, know-nothing senators))

As opposed to what we had with our last choices for President Joe?

Know-nothing governors and rich, Celbrity senators.

Actually... Barkley is sometimes a loud-mouth, but it seems to be one of his strengths. I've never seen Barkley say something because he just thought it was what people want to hear. He seems to call it like he sees it, and makes no excuses for it.

He also seems to be one of the small handful of people to come out of the NBA experience with a bit of integrity.

I would miss seeing him joining in with the sports commentators, though. He has a good sense of humor, and brings a lot to the table.

Also, his "revelations" regarding what the Republicans are all about shows an awareness of reality. "I was a Republican until they lost their minds," he said earlier this month. I would make the statement that they could not lose what they never had, but that is a side issue. The good thing is Charles can see who is and is not good for this nation, and owes his allegiance to either truth or country, rather than "political team".

That's what I mean. It's definitely the trend right now.

Having said that, this could just be Barkley talking. I remember he once said he was planning on joining the Chicago Bulls, but that never happened. Actually, it would have been nice to see, but I'm not sure it was ever anything more substantial than him talking.

when barkely was in phoenix he was a bball player and was permitted - encouraged - to say outlandish things... some that would be fine and funny for an athelete but for a gov???
it'd be fun to look up some of those remarks and give them another go. chas does have the ability, though many in politics don't, of being able to get away with - i was just kidding or something of the like.
from my years of listening to the guy, he seems about as sharp as a spoon.

we do get the politicians we deserve, tis good to remember.

I would rather trust a celebrity chosen by random chance than the "cultural elite" foisted on us by our political process.

Heck, a while ago I opined a ballot filled with a random sample of citizens, and it was pretty well received.

"I would rather trust a celebrity chosen by random chance than the "cultural elite" foisted on us by our political process."

How about neither? Is that too much to ask?

I believe if he wears a Bear Bryant houndstooth hat and gets an endorsement from Joe Namath he is a lock.

I like Barcley because he is a self-made man. There are too many elitest in office today on both sides.

He would have my vote if my residence was in Alabama.

Charles Barkley for Governor?

That would be...uncivilized

Hell Can't be any worse than Ronald Reagan. He was a Celebrity Govenor then President of the United States. What's to say Charles Barkley would be that bad. I kinda Like Him myself.

"I was a Republican until they lost their minds,"

as was I. go get em Tiger.

If Lynn Swann can do it, why not Sir Charles? He should have started as the mayor of Philly. People here love him.

My favorite line of the day.

This guy don't stand a chance. Now if he was a soccer, ooops football player, well then, maybe, but a basketball player, NO way.

Jesse Ventura.

I'd vote for Barkley before Bush. His desire to help people makes his decision to be a democrat the only choice.

Big government and big business already have enough friends.

Yes, until you find out he is conservative......like Reagan.

"I remember when, I rememeber I remember when I lost my mind..."

Gnarls Barkley

I live in Alabama. I drink, gamble, smoke reefer and enjoy sex as often as possible. I also don't care if your black, foregin, gay, or satanic. I believe in a higher power but damn sure don't want ANYTHING to do with organized religion. That makes me a minority here( oh yeah and I was raised Catholic). Also, some would consider me a tree hugger. At the same time I just shot 200 rounds this afternoon. I love to shoot and I love guns. I think capitalism corrupts, but most men are corrupted by money and it's the only option for government. I would vote for Charles Barkely anyday. I hope he wins, just what we need, a black, self made millionaire, who's not afraid to plunk down $10,000 and several vodka cranberries at the MGM( I've seen it with my own eyes).
